miami totally overpayed, i dont understand whu u would give a guy 5 million a year to come off the bench, hes a sissy jump shot that cant do anything else and is injury prone for 5 mill a year u want a guy that can either get u 30 any given night, lock down defensively, get 15 plus boards, or provide all the hussle plays, jones can do none of those things, terrible signing

Sadly for the Heat, none of those greedy bastards would accept that $4 million salary. Terrible signing indeed.

:o Who in the league is signed to a 5 million dollar contract that can do that?

Maggette signed for 10 million a year, and Brand just signed for 16.4 million a year. Like Carl said, those guys will give you 30 or 15 boards. OTOH, Jones signed for 4 MILLION, not 5, which is less than a quarter of what Brand got. For 4 million a year you'll take a knock down shooter who can come off the bench and stretch the defense.

I never really followed James Jones but I'm glad the Heat added a three point shooter with defense to the team to open up the floor for Wade. Hopefully his knees holdup.

Just FYI for the uninformed: His deal is only like 9 million total guranteed. It's a partial gurantee after year two, with there being a team option on that 3rd year.

So essentially it's the equilavent of a 2 years 9-9.5 million dollar deal. A complete hometown discount and bargain. No doubt.

Congrats to James Jones. As a Portland season ticket holder, I have to say he was a joy to watch every night. Good luck to him.

It's all about the U! Welcome home JJ! Please, this was a great addition for the price, and the contract length is money for out goal to still have cap space in 2010, and signing Chalmers to a 3 year deal was BRILLIANT! This kid was a first round talent, and now after 2 years, we wont have to resign him and dig into our cap space, by the time he is a free agent, we will already hopefully have a key stud from the 2010 free agent class..

Wade 26, Beasley 19, Chalmers 22, Haslem 27, Cook 20, JJ 25, Wright 23.. we have come a long way in our rebuilding in a year, with all the "old" guys we had in Jason Williams, Walker, Shaq, etc(granted, we won a ring)

Not to mention Marion is an amazing asset right now, as a player and contract.. something should go down soon in the form of a trade I'm thinking.. and Zo should still give us 15 solid backup center mins a night..

Miami made a wise signing. Jones WILL open up the floor. The guy is a straight sharp shooter and extremely smart. He can keep your team calm if they ever begin to panic or losing the will to win, which often happened with a young team. Blazers will miss him but we're all happy for Jones getting the security and getting to play for his hometown team. Here's to seeing Miami back in the play off run.

re: Chalmers

in order to give a 2nd rounder a three year deal, you have to use part of the MLE.

How is that possible unless it's only a 3 year deal? There can't be a team option (according to Larry Coon anyway) for the 3rd year of a 5 year deal as was being reported. How can a team partially guarantee a contract?

From what I've gathered, it seems like it's a 2 year guanrateed deal, with a team option for the last 3 years of the deal; basically giving the Heat leverage for the 2010 off-season.

That's what's being reported, but it doesn't jive with Larry Coon's FAQ. Specifically:

http://members.cox.net/lmcoon/salarycap.htm#50

Team Options give the team the right to invoke the option year. There can be only one option year (except in the case of rookie scale contracts), and the option year can't be for a lower salary than the previous season.

Options can be held by the player or the team, but ETOs are always held by the player (i.e., there's no such thing as a team Early Termination Option).

it doesn't say when the option year takes place. most options are for the last year, this contract seems like it has it for the 3rd year. if my keeps him, then they have him for the full length. otherwise they cut him then and there. that's what it looks like to me.

You can't sign a 5 year contract but have the team option be the 3rd year. That makes no sense because then the team option isn't just the 3rd year, it's the 3rd, 4th, and 5th years, which goes against the CBA. The team option is always for the final year of the contract because it has to be. A player can have an early termination clause for the 2nd last year of his contract if it's 6 seasons, but that's as early as it can go

Options can occur only when one season remains on the contract, while ETO's can occur when two seasons remain if the contract is for six seasons.

I think the reporter just got it wrong, or the Heat's CBA lawyer is either a genius, or a complete moron.

The last 3 years could be non-guaranteed... Or only guaranteed if not waived by a certain date. Technically they aren't team options but the effect is the same.

How can you non guarantee an NBA contract? Additionally, I also don't see how the conditional option of not being waived by a certain date makes sense given:

Conditional options are not allowed -- the existence of the option may not be contingent on some condition, such as the number of games the team wins or the points per game the player scores.

Either the heat have found a loophole that no one has ever found before, just to sign James Jones, or the report about this deal is wrong.

NBA contracts don't have to be guaranteed- its just that the player has little reason to accept a non-guaranteed year because its pretty much just a team option.

Look at Antoine Walker's contract- basically its the same thing where the last 2 years are basically a team option.
