Jamont Gordon

Post#1 » by Warbirdz44 » Thu Jul 10, 2008 3:03 pm

Hey guys, I realize in all the hooplah of getting Elton Brand the summer league has taken a back seat but I think you guys got an absolute steal in getting Jamont Gordon as an undrafted free agent. Some mock drafts had him going in the first round and all of them had him going by at least the mid second round. Given the 6ers being a bit thin at the guard position, I think that Gordon has a good chance at making the team. I watched most of his college games so if you guys have any questions about him, just ask me.

What are his strengths and weaknesses?

What type of player from the (past/currently in the nba) does he compare to?

Strengths: For lack of a better term, he is a tank. He can get to the basket at will. He has the speed to drive past a bigger guard and the strength to drive through a smaller guard. When he decides to drive to the basket, he'll either get a basket or get fouled. He is also a really good passer and a tough defender, usually good for a couple of steals and a blocked shot a game. He's also very versatile, having played the 1-4 positions in college. He's also a GREAT rebounder. One of the best rebounding guards I've ever seen in college.

Weaknesses: He has had some turnover problems but he did improve a little bit in his Junior season. His long range jumpshot is inconsistent and he was a ballhog at times, but seeing as he will be fighting for a spot in the NBA, he will probably be a little more willing to distribute.

As for comparisons, I've heard him compared to Eric Snow, Fred Jones, and Antonio Daniels

Thanks for the lowdown on him. However, I can only assume that the E. Snow comparison was inserted in there for his body type because Snow is very little like F. Jones or A. Daniels.

Come on man, we all know that Snow won like 18 Dunk Contests in disguise, and told gm's to not draft him to high becuase he wanted to be a badass underdog type story.......

it's more like Fred Jones and Daniels wish they were liek Snow.....

I'm more of a college fan so I don't watch just a whole lot of NBA hoops (maybe a game or so a week during the regular season) so the comparisons to those players were just ones that I've read online so I can't vouch for how accurate they are. The strengths/weakness, however, were all based on my observations of him.

Hopefully, Cheeks is a stricter coach than Rick Stansbury (Gordon's college coach) was. RS pretty much let Gordon do whatever he wanted to and he jacked up a lot of bad shots in the process. If he can have a stricter coach reign him a little bit, he will be a more productive player.

Does he have a decent work ethic & is he coachable? Also how will he respond to sitting on the bench?

He has a pretty good work ethic. As for being coachable, it's hard to say. Like I said earlier, Stansbury pretty much let him do whatever he wanted to do in college so I'm not sure how he'll adjust. As for coming off the bench, it'll definitely be a new experience for him but if he wants to be in the league, he'll learn to like it. From what I've seen he seems like a really humble guy so he should be fine but right now it's too soon to tell.

Well, Cheeks is probably one of the softest coaches in the NBA :S

He was a PG, who played more like a 2 guard. His 5 to 4 assist to turnover ratio and his poor shooting from 3 point range killed his chances of being drafted. If Mississippi St had a good point guard, which could have allowed Jamont Gordon to play the 2 guard for the last 2 years, the 76ers would not be sitting pretty with Jamont Gordon.

I am thrilled to have Gordon in camp. Watching him drive to the hoop is very exciting, as his his rebounding. I saw him get 10 rebounds in a game against LSU this season. The 76ers only have 10 players on their roster which favors Gordon. If Gordon just does what he does best, then Gordon will succeed. I do agree with you, the 76ers did get a steal. The 76ers have a nice open court game, which does make things easier for Gordon, since he fits right in with that style. I hope Gordon rings the Warriors bell tomorrow.

You made an excellent point on Rick Stansbury. He almost cost Gordon a chance of landing in the NBA. Now Gordon is fighting for his life. Gordon never shot trays well. What was Stansbury waiiing for? Gordon knows the 76ers have 2 openings on the roster. Gordon was one of the big reasons that Mississippi ST held oponents to 36%. For a period during the season they were number 1 in defense in the nation. However, I also have to give a lot of credit to Vernardo and Rhodes. The man is built like a rock with a lot of speed.

You guys got a steal. I said that last year about Thad. I love Gordon's game. He's a 6'4 combo guard that is huge. He is s great rebounder. Good scorer (his shot needs to improve though). Good passer. He can also defend at a high level. He can play next to Lou Will. He can play next to AI2. His size and strength lets him play both positions. He will end up being a solid bench options where he can help out at the guard spot.

That was one of the top college plays last year

Jamont would be a nice piece for Philly, Just watched some game 2 footage, he seems to be getting along with Thad and the boys there in summer league, has some potential and we need another Gaurd

Here's a highlight of how clutch he is. Play happens around the 1:17 mark.

Last second shot against Kentucky in the second round of the SEC tournament.

How about a quick NBA comparison?

If he's like: Courtney Alexander? Tariq Abdul-Wahad? These sort of guys never seem to pan out in the NBA.
