Can it get any worse for Jacksonville?

Post#1 » by PhilipNelsonFan » Thu Jul 10, 2008 5:38 pm

First, the rumors are circulating that the team will be sold and consequently uprooted to LA.

Now, Matt Jones, who has not been long for the bust tag, was arrested and may have been in possession of coke and marijuana. This team is putting together a pretty lousy draft record, they just lost Marcus Stroud, they have no insurance behind David Garrard...

This team is somehow supposed to upstage the Colts? Looks less and less likely to me.

If they leave J'ville, then my entire time in college will suck.

The Marcus Stroud deal was a good deal for them as he wasn't the same Stroud that teamed with Henderson to make a great duo.

They re-signed Rob Meir who they like so they'll be good there.

They drafted Derrick Harvey and Quentin Groves with their first two picks in April's Draft. They are two of the better pure pass rushers that declared last year. And they'll help the Jaguars apply pressure to the QB. Something that the Jaguars have had trouble with historically.

They're still going to be able to run the ball with Fred Taylor and Maurice Jones-Drew. They're still going to beat people up physically week in and week out.

Matt Jones wasn't a good selection but they did sign Jerry Porter who should give Garrard a good WR option to offset the loss of Ernest Wilford who wasn't all that great to begin with.

They'll still be playoff team whether or not they knock off the Colts is another thing but it wouldn't surprise me in the least.

First of all Jags owner Wayne Weaver just said he has no intentions of selling the Jags so I'm not the least bit worried about that. As for Matt Jones he was currently placed as the 6th WR on the Jags depth chart so I don't see how this is really going to hurt us either. Bad draft record? I'm not following you there. This thread makes my head hurt, the Jags have very few holes and to me easily seem to be one of the best teams in the AFC and entire NFL. The sky doesn't seem to be falling in my eyess.

Sixth on the depth chart?? Who the f**k is ahead of him?? Reggie Williams, Ernest Wilford...that's all I got right now. Surely not Troy Williamson. Hell, I didn't even realize the Jaguars HAD six wide receivers on their roster.

Also, I temporarily forgot about Reggie Nelson, who will make that secondary still awesome, but I still don't know about downgrading at DT like they did, even if they added two talented DEs.

And by the draft, this is what I was referring to...

2008 8 Derrick Harvey DE Florida
2007 21 Reggie Nelson FS Florida
2006 28 Marcedes Lewis TE UCLA
2005 21 Matt Jones WR Arkansas
2004 9 Reggie Williams WR Washington
2003 7 Byron Leftwich QB Marshall
2002 9 John Henderson DT Tennessee
2001 13 Marcus Stroud DT Georgia
2000 29 R.Jay Soward WR USC

Soward was a bust, Leftwich couldn't stay healthy, Reggie Williams will never live up to that pick, Jones is on his way out, Lewis is in about the third tier of TEs in the league, and Derrick Harvey will be disregarded for the time being. Jacksonville's draft history appears very checkered to me.

Way to give 'em a reason, Matt! Jones was already in the "give us a reason to can your sorry a$$" bullseye. He will be released very soon, no surprise. Heard from a little birdie that his agent has already contacted the Chicago Bears, no idea how that call went though.

The Jagaur depth chart at WR:
Dennis Northcutt
Reggie Williams
Jerry Porter
Troy Williamson
Mike Walker
John Broussard
D'Juan Woods will be in training camp and they really liked his work in the OTAs

Walker was a 3rd rounder in 07 that they like and will stick
Broussard and Woods are fighting for that last spot

As for their drafting, it's not the worst (my Lions own that!) but they've got an awful lot of guys who fall in the "disappointment" category.
Jones was no higher than 5th on that list even before his Michael Irvin impression.

Yes, Matt Jones was sixth, he is and has been out of favor with Del Rio for awhile. Hell he wasn't even active for half the games last year. As of right now the depth chart looks like this - Jerry Porter, Reggie Williams, Dennis Northcutt, Mike Walker, Troy Williamson, John Broussard, and then Matt Jones/Woods. Mike Walker was on IR all last year and so far has looked amazing during off season workouts. I love how people overrate Matt Jones, he didn't even dress for the majority of the games last year. Everyone in jacksonville HATES Matt Jones, and I mean HATES him. Even before the drug charges, I would have been very surprised if he had made the final cut. As for the draft, the Jags have been hit or miss in the first but they have drfated very, very well with their other picks. Its also not fair to throw RJ Soward into the mix, that was 8 years ago and under the Tom Coughlin regime. Also, I highly doubt you can consider the DT position as downgraded, Stroud has been the same player for years bnow, he's only been making Pro Bowls because of his name. Last year he barely played and was never the same due to his knee injuries. Rob Meier, is vastly underrated and hardly missed a beat whenever he filled in for Stroud or Big John. Meier would probably start for the majority of teams in the league. Also the Jags have Tony McDaniels, who has been very impressive and Del Rio said he has Pro Bowl potential. Like I said the Jags have very few holes, so I'm not worried. The only thing that worries me is depth at QB, but hell we did fine alst year whenever Garrard went down. If Garrard does go down again, we will jsut have to rely on our rediculous running back dou, which is probably the best in the entire league.

The Jags might not have the best drafting record in the 1st but I like what they do in the other rounds snagging guys like Maurice Jones-Drew, Mike Walker, Justin Durant, Khalif Barnes and Quentin Groves.

If Mercedes Lewis plays up to his potential then watch out.
