Josh Smith??

Post#1 » by Houston Suns » Thu Jul 10, 2008 9:34 pm

Why dont the suns try to work a sign and trade with the hawks??
Give them back
Diaw + Tucker + Strawberry

for

Josh Smith(S&T)

That would certainly put the suns over the top, it would be like having a younger marion back
and if the suns could work out a way to sign J-Will instead of Lue and resign Giricek
Nash/J-Will
Bell/Barbs/Giricek
Smith/Hill/Giricek
Amare/Smith/Lopez
Shaq/Lopez/Amare

Sure, why not. Then we will trade Shaq and Strawberry for Dwight Howard, and Turk....

Its a sign and trade, so it could happen.
Smith is leaving the hawks anyways, so i think they would like to recieve some valuable assets back in return.
rather than just lose him for nothing.
I dont think its that bad of a trade, since it is a S&T.

To start with the easier part, J-Will over Lue won't happen...Lue's got his pen about a half an inch from our offer sheet.

I see the appeal for the Suns in that trade, although I'm still attached to seeing the upside in Tuck and DJ. Now I live in ATL so I passively follow the Hawks and go to some games (read: annual Suns game plus any random game my friends pressure me into). For the Hawks, this doesn't make sense AT ALL. They don't need DJ, they've got Acie Law who's in the same roster spot DJ would fill but better than DJ. Tuck is a big gamble - nobody would give anything better than a second rounder for him. So that leaves Diaw for J-Smoove...not unless their FO gets some of that ATL crack (which as I've seen with my own eyes, LITERALLY has some people walking the streets NAKED-yeah, you read it right).

Since when does Josh Smith play SF? Since when does an overpayed SF that a team trades away and 2 d-league calibre players equal the value of a up and rising PF that can do EVERYTHING (score, block, rebound, pass, defend...) Diaw is extremely overpaid and i know most suns fans are high on Tucker but hes proven nothing YET, so he has zero value..

Jinx you owe me a coke

Agreed EXCEPT Josh Smith does actually play a bit at the 3 when they *try* to put Marvin at PF and Zaza at C. You're right he is predominantly a PF but I could see him at the 3 on the Suns just to use him for his cutting abilities.

ok, i think people fail to see that i am saying that this is an sign and trade
not a straight up trade diaw for smith
Just like a few years back, when the hawks did a sign and trade to get JJ for diaw.
Johnson was leaving the suns anyways. But the suns ended up getting some value back for him.
The sign and trade is just so we can afford smith.

Josh Smith isn't "leaving the Hawks anyways". Besides, I think you misunderstand how it works...he's a RFA and unless the team is not committed to re-signing, a team would never do an S&T. The Hawks have stated that they will match any offer for Smith, and if they didn't it would be because it was an astronomically high offer from another team...in which case do you think SarvKerr will take on a match to that offer? Don't get me wrong, I like the idea of getting Josh Smith here but I don't think your plan is realistic.

Yeah lets trade 3 players so we can overpay another one and have 8 players on our roster so we can sign 6 vet min scrubs.

Fail.

It would have to look more like:

Barbosa + Diaw for Smith (S&T) and Claxton.

I realize that makes the Hawks look more like the Atlanta Suns than anything else, but it does solve some issues for both teams.

Suns

We trade away our "tweeners" and get back a good SF-PF and a back-up PG. We get one more expiring in Claxton for a big FA splash in two years.

PG - Nash/Claxton/Lue
SG - Bell/Strawberry
SF - Smith/Hill/Tucker
PF - Stoudemire
C - O'Neal/Lopez/Skinner

Hawks

They become a remarkably well-rounded team and get good value back for Smith.

PG - Bibby/Law
SG - Johnson/Barbosa
SF - Childress/Richardson
PF - Williams/Diaw
C - Horford/Pachulia

You could sign Smith to a 5 year $50,000,000 deal. Throw in perks as you see fit.

I agree WTFsunsFTW. I think your view sd1306 is skewed. Hes not as good as you think he is. The guy has a low bball IQ, which we do not need on this team, and is a very streaky player. Hes worth about 50 mil, but will get over paid like most basketball players. Remember when Diaw had an outstanding year? His all around numbers basicly were better, not all, but better output. A very hot commodity at the time. He still has talent, but has to thrive in the right system and team around him. Diaw and Smith are combo players. Both can play the SF and PF position.

Smith is an amazing athlete but I question his attitude, drive, and ability to be great. I do not see the same drive that Amare has, and think he will be a glorified stromile Swift who can put up some stats every other game. Maybe an all star appearance if he is lucky, but there are too many better players at his position as of now.

There is no need for him, and no way they take Diaw back.

I think this is what kills most trade scenarios that the Suns find themselves in. The "Diaw Factor". Pretty much our only large-salary trade asset and no one whats him.

I'm pretty sure all of you undervalue Smith. There is not a chance we get him for Diaw and some fillers....sorry. Try posting it on the ATL board. See what happens.

This is a ridiculous thread. Hawks wouldn't even give up JSmoove for Barbs AND Diaw. Why give up their second option for two backups???

And yeah he's a nice player and would be an asset to any team but a lineup including of Raja him and Amare is redundant and makes no sense.

Agreed with Togo and miklo, no way ATL does that deal. If Smith really wanted out, they could get a lot better via S&T than what we can offer...

I'd be more inclined to look at a Barbosa + Tucker for Chilldress + Salim...

SUPPOSEDLY (Sports Illustrated) Josh Smith says he doesn't come back to ATL unless Mike Woodson is out...and they already re-signed Woodson. If Smith is adamant enough about this, it would be really funny to give them a taste of their own medicine and offer them "at least something better than just losing him" (Diaw  ) via S&T. I mean clearly if that were the case they would get much better offers than we could give them in terms of S&T proposals, plus I still don't see Smith as a good fit here, just thought it'd be funny.
