Reports say Celtics expected to offer Posey the full MLE

Post#1 » by return2glory » Thu Jul 10, 2008 5:32 pm

According to the Boston Herald, the Celtics are expected to offer James Posey the full MLE. They, however are not sure on the 4th year.

It also appears that Posey's price may have gone up because he is now the most coveted free agent remaining. A few other teams may offer Posey a little more than the MLE. Either way, it seems Posey will be signed by sometone in the next few days, according to his agent.

http://www.bostonherald.com/sports/bask ... position=1

Here is a part of what the Herald is reporting:
The Celtics would still love to have Posey, and according to league sources they are willing to spend the full mid-level exception, announced Tuesday as $5.585 million. But, despite talk elsewhere that they were ready to do the fourth year, the C’s still appear to be trying to hold the line on that.

ugh. I guess I can tolerate the full mle for 3 years, but please god let the 4th year be a team option.

Guessing this means we roll with Lue and Birdman and rely on internal improvements from Big Baby, Powe, and Perk.
You gotta make it sexy! Hips and nips, otherwise I'm not eating.

I agree. To be fair to Posey, though, I think he wants job security (a longer contract) more than money.

If this is really what the Celtics are offering, my name is Athanacropolis and I approve of this deal!

Just sign him already, 3 or 4 years I don't care, by year 4 he'll be expiring and we can trade him.

2 years. He is going to be done by his third year, mich less his fourth. I did warm to the idea of Maggette, or any other younger scoring wing that can provide insurance for Pierce and Ray Allen.

if they go the full 5.8 it damn sure better be no longer than 3 years guaranteed. even then its sketchy. the big 3 can make a lot of average roleplayers look above average. . for a LOT cheaper 3 years down the line when pose is an old 34

Full MLE for two years I could accept. It sends a message that we take care of the players that take care of us, and is a vliant effort to see him return.

Three years, I can't take, as not only would that be rather risky, but it could literally mean the difference between being able to sign a marquee FA when Ray Allen and Scal come off the books, and not having the caproom to do so.

hold the line DA
Poze is replaceable
make the tough decision well, like you have all along

if we didnt win this past year i would be for the 4yrs more
but we are over the hump and everyone has to go through us now

posey had plenty un4yresque games during the regular season and some new, more atheletic, blood would be my preference

spread that money around

I agree...an option on the 4th year would be nice, that way it could be a salary dump for us...

...there is nothing wrong with a 3 year deal, that was always the give point...a 4th year really complicates the salary situation in Pierce's walk year...trading Posey's 7-something million isnt the issue, its what you can get back in a package with whatever else is expendable on the roster. The aren't going to trade Pierce...they would have either traded Ray Allen, let him walk, or re-signed him by them...the rest of the roster is going to be low-cost rookie contract players and no-value, low-cost vet role players...

NOT having Posey's crapping contract on the books in 2011 may be the difference between getting a big-time young talent for 10-15 million and being left with 6-7 under the cap with limited trade options...

The team has to become much more creative and far more lucky with player development if they give Posey that 4th year-that's why this has taken so long...
