At this point.....are you guys expecting some value out of trading Artest?

At best.....I would consider a Odom for Artest+Kenny Thomas trade a Financial move that saves the Kings $$$ in the long run. Cut your loses with Artest while getting rid of Kenny Thomas.

As for resigning Odom or not...if he fits..great, resign him....if not...let him go ( just like you would have let Artest go for nothing ) and then get the players you want in the FA market.

Pretty much the way I feel about it. Specifically with Odom, he may actually be a great fit for the direction we are heading in. Ron isn't and that isn't going to change without some serious work.

In addition the Lakers may be willing to go just a bit further even to save Sacramento some cash. We could really use Mikki Moore with Turiaf gone so:

- Odom+Mihm
- Artest+SAR+Moore

The Lakers save the Kings some 11m next year and save them about 3m or so this year. That 14m can be increased without too much trouble. Odom can be traded to Cleveland (who would love to have him) for Snow+Jones+their rookie Hickson+next year's first round pick. The Kings would save about 2m right there.

So all in all the Kings save:

- 16m in salary, gain the equivalent of two first round picks and open up time for their young guys.

So the Kings trade Artest and then put the onus on themselves to find a taker for Odom? Yeah, great idea there. (That was sarcasm if it didn't come across well).

If the Kings trade Artest it won't be for pieces that they MAY be able to trade again; that's just downright (Please Use More Appropriate Word) thinking.

It's pretty simple to see that a trade can easily be found. A three way deal is the obvious solution.

Fine the Lakers will do that part to for you.

For the Kings...the key is saving $10 mil in guaranteed $$ and clearing Kenny Thomas off the 2009-2010 books.

For the Lakers....if they want to take on Artest....the cost is $10 mil and whatever likely Luxury Tax that they may incur.

As someone else suggested here......the Kings and Lakers are 2 teams headed in different directions....the Kings should be building for the future...doing this may help. If this was a straight-up "equal" Expiring Contract swap, then I can see reasons for not doing it...but saving $10 mil in guaranteed $$$ owed whild gaining Salarycap flexiblility for the upcoming season is another good step in the right direction.

However, I will say that this move could pretty much guarantee the Lakers a Championship...which I think ( much like the Grizzlies trade for Gasol ) really sucks.

I think that 10m savings can be increased if you're willing to give us two more useful (but not long-term) but also expensive contracts in Moore+SAR instead of Kurt Thomas. That would open up room for your picks to get playing time as well. K.T. is annoying but I think this deal helps once more in that it would give major cap room (say about 12m if not mistaken for 2009) to be a player again in a year.

Don't underrated the value of Odom to other teams.

For example, NY likes Odom quite a bit and would probably be willing to eat Kenny's deal as well by trading Marbury+filler for Odom+Thomas. That would then give Sacramento another 8m in coming cap savings. So all in all it would end up being approximately 23-24m in cap savings just by trading Artest. I don't think the Maloofs can pass up the possibility in that case of trading just ONE YEAR OF RON-RON away. If you're succesful in the second you'll have some very significant cap room to play with.

While he may not look valuable to you on the surface, Odom is a very valuable piece to the Maloofs.

Are there any Kings fans that are past the whole Lakers/kings rivalry? I mean people saying "I don't want to trade artest because the Lakers would be favorites to win the title and I don't want to see that" need to stop looking at what other teams are doing and start thinking about their own team.

The reality is LAkers Just left the finals without Artest..so the thought of giving LA a ring is funny..the thought that artest is some how a cash cow and a gift is laughable ...The fact would be that Odom not is is a good low post player but he would become the best player on the kings if traded.

Also he would relieve 14 mill in cap space next year for the kings ..which leaves 33 mill in payroll and no major players needing a extention.. and that cap will be at atleast 60 mill...

Lakers are getting a loose cannon..who the thought of is better than the reality

It would be a way better deal for the kings than the lakers

The incredible cap room that such a deal could provide should be reason enough to think about making this deal.

The best three way trade I've come up with would be this:

- NY trades Marbury, Lee, Balkman
- LAL trade Odom, Mihm
- SAC trades Moore, SAR, Artest, Kenny Thomas

Yes that's right all three of your craptastic contracts gone in one trade:

- NY receives Odom, Kenny Thomas, Mihm
- LAL receive: SAR, Moore, and Artest
- SAC receives: David Lee, Marbury, Balkman

The Knicks get a fantastic player for their system and still protect the 2010 plan.

The Lakers receive some depth in the front court and get Artest.

The Kings save 3m this year and a WHOPPINGGGGGGGG sum of 20m next year, PLUS David Lee.

Honestly...as an outside observer...I really don't think that Artest's value is that great...unless you guys wait until the Trade deadline. At least with the Lakers...it's not like they have any draft picks to sell you guys....much less any prospect that you guys would want that they would be willing to part with.

1) This doesn't yield ANY cap flexibility. It yields more room under the luxury tax level but since the Kings are targeting the very next summer for free agent money it's not like they're going to use that space to try and take on longterm salary. Therefore, the financial aspect is 100% useless to the team.

2) Artest's value is > getting NOTHING that helps the team.

i really like that knicks trade where the kings get stephon, lee, and balkman.

But i would like odom for artest/thomas alot too. Odom would fit in with the kings VERY nicely.

also...as i said before...give odom a try here. I think he fits nicely. He can shoot, rebound, is not slouch on defense, and can play the 3 to give thompson time. If he doesnt work, dont resign him. We save a ton of money and pick up a guy who averaged 14, 10, 3, 1 steal and just about 1 block a game. Shoot ill take that while saving the money off thomas' contract.

As an outsider, can someone explain why the kings would even consider trading him for odom??
There is nothing that odom does better than artest except maybe control his temper

Personally, if im the kings FO, i would laugh at the lakers if offered that deal

No way Farmar would be included in that deal. If u guys want someone young then trade Odom to another team in a three way.

Odom is overall better than Artest, but Artest is better at the SF position which the Lakers need. We are not desperate. We can still win it all with Odom, but might have a better chance with Artest because Lamar is not a great shooter.

You're incorrect. That's all I'm going to say. (I want to say something horrible but I have to resist. Not my style).

Maybe I am missing something here....are you saying that the plan is for the Kings to go fishing in the Free Agent pool in the 2010-2011 season?

If that is the case and the Kings intend to do nothing and simply let Artest go for nothing and let Kenny Thomas expire ( or buy him out )....then Salarycapwise....you're right...there is no overall benefit to the Salarycap since you do not intend to sign anybody until 2010-2011.

The only real benefit to trading Artest+Kenny Thomas for Odom is that it would save the Kings about $10mil in guaranteed $$$ owed over the same period.

Most people on RealGM would agree that Ron is clearly the better player. Value is one thing, but if you're arguing talent, I mean come on.

Anyway, I just don't like this deal. It does nothing really for us, and it doesn't make much sense at all. Clearing Kenny off the books is nice, but it doesn't really constructively help us at all.

Such a trade would:
1)Give Kings a pretty decent young back-up PG at a reasonably small salary,
2)@ A $2mil Trade Exception to use to help some team unload a player-for a draft pick,
3)Put the Kings @ $13mil under the Salary Cap in 09-10.

Which proposed trade would do that?

And honestly, Farmar is a nice young player, but I really think that if Geoff liked him for our system, that he would have drafted him when he had the chance. And it's not like we really need him at all anyway.

He would look great next to Miller or Hawes at PF. I say do it, see how the team looks at the deadline, if we aren't looking up than do what we can to trade Miller for expirings and get under the cap by next year.

The whole Lakers/Kings thing needs to be put to an end. We are at two totally different intervals, we aren't competing with them right now, we are competing with ourselves. This trade helps both sides for different reasons. The main one for us is that Lamar may be the PROTOTYPE PF for Petrie. That and he can slide to SF giving Jason the minutes he'll need.

awesome post SacKingZZZ, you seem like the only person on this forum who understand what kind of team petrie is trying to build.
