I hate the "team A" won a trade because years later they had the cap room to sign "player b" arguement. That crap is so stupid. You evaluate the amount of cap-room that was saved when the trade was made.
I mean if the Lakers traded Kobe Bryant to the Knicks for Stephon Marbury, would you say the Lakers won the trade? What if two years later they sign Lebron (with all the caproom they have) and they go on to have a multi-championship dynasty while Kobe's career goes downhill then would you say the Lakers won the trade?

Fringe playoff teams? Philly is not going to be a fringe playoff team anymore. They went pretty close with Detroit, and EB puts them over the top against the Pistons in a seven-game series. They pretty much turned all that cap space they got for AI into Elton Brand. Think about it: AI is 33 and past his prime, EB is 29 and in his prime and a 20/10 machine. Pair that with Iguodala and Miller, and they're gonna win 50 games and a top 3 seed, easy. I already put them ahead of the Cavs and Magic.
It's funny how when these teams dump superstars for draft picks and cap space, their GMs get killed, but then when those same GMs take advantage of all that money and young talent, nobody is willing to revisit that original trade that brought them all that cap space in the first place. I hope that for Chris Wallace's sake he can make something out of Kwame Brown's expiring contract and the Pau Gasol salary dump.

Philly wasn't 'close' to beating Detroit, not when they got blown out by double digits for the last 3 games of the year.

Philly is a fringe playoff team until they ACTUALLY DO get a higher seed. And they won't be 'over the top' against the Pistons until they ACTUALLY DO win a series against Detroit. They don't 'win 50 games, easy' until they've ACTUALLY WON 50 games, easily.
Theory vs. reality. Look into it.
