Why not Augustine as our backup PF?
Couldn't he be that hustle big we were looking for in the 2nd round of the draft?
I'm just wondering why there isn't any talk of him being re-signed. He can come back on the cheap like they want and he fits the description of what they need. I remember when he got drafted, Otis said he was the guy they wanted in the 2nd round, but he just hasnt gotten playing time....maybe for good reason who knows...
So with Battie coming back, improvement of Gortat, and maybe some minutes from Augustine, do the magic really need another big?

Dwight Howard on his FT struggles:
"I just think everybody needs to stop talking about it," Howard said. "There's more to life than free throws."

I thought we'd already offered him a deal. He's restricted, so he may be looking elsewhere before committing to Orlando, but I can't see anyone offering him more than the minimum, which is roughly what we have put on the table.

We did re-sign him. 700k I believe. I think the most ppl who want a big is somebody that can start and have Lewis go back to the 3. Just get better PG's off the bench. And I think we should do good this year.

The team begins practice on Wednesday night at RDV Sportsplex. Games begin Monday night at the sportsplex. Augustine, the Magic's second-round pick in 2006, accepted the Magic's tender offer for about $700,000.

Re: What's wrong with Augustine?
Pat Ewing said the other day in an interview on the radio that he saw some big improvements on the defense end of Augustine. He said gortat was doing better on offensive and defensive. Maybe Augustine could be that defensive big off the bench we were looking for last year

Re: What's wrong with Augustine?
Our front court is full. The problem we have right now is PG depth. This is our roster right now:
PG Nelson
SG Pietrus, Lee, Reddick
SF Hedo, Bogans
PF Lewis, Cook, Augustine
C Howard, Battie, Gortat
Every single one of these guys are signed. Since Pietrus, Hedo and Lewis are all interchangeable at SF, plus Hedo plays point forward and Pietrus can play SG, this makes Reddick and Bogans expendable so I hope we trade one or the other for a PG, while also signing Williams to the VE.
Of course if it was up to me, I would re-sign Dooling, sign Williams to the VE and call it a day, unless we could get a good young PG for Bogans or Reddick, like Lowry or Crittenton.

Re: What's wrong with Augustine?
auggie could fit if he played with more intensity, if he had the heart of a matt harpring he would do fine off the bench for us, but you cant teach heart and hustle very well in the NBA. PG is the most glaring need for us as it is now

Re: What's wrong with Augustine?
Agreed the frontcourt is done...they may resign Foyle for the vet min, but he and/or Auggie will be wearing a suit. Now it is all about who we can get at the 2nd and 3rd string PG spots. That is 18 to 20 minutes of key time on the floor (plus covering the 10 or so games Jameer will miss)...and what Otis gets done here could/will make a big difference in our final record.

Re: What's wrong with Augustine?
I like Augie, he has some definite skills, but he must lack the strength to rebound or something, because he is just not a banger. I think he is an IR guy this year, again.

Re: What's wrong with Augustine?
as much as I do not to see it happen I dont think we are going to get another big and I think we may end up signing arroyo again. I agree our frontcourt is loaded but my question is do we try to trade battie for a PG?

Re: What's wrong with Augustine?
I think Auggie has the ability, he just needs a ton of minutes front loaded in the season to jump start him and get him more acclimated with the game in order to be effective, and this is where I see the issue, I don't think he will see significant minutes...He has a lot of tools, don't forget this guy was one of the best statistical standouts at pre draft camp 06, his rebounding, agility, speed and strength are all very up there...

Re: What's wrong with Augustine?
Thief i just dont see him as being athletic. I havent seen much to suggest that he has much athletic talent, now obviously its been hard since he hasent played much but ussually those type of things stand out quickly.

Re: What's wrong with Augustine?
oh he's definitely an athlete, when I saw him in 06 I thought he was an excellent athlete, in several sets, he was the only guy still walking around bright eyed and not breathing hard...
pretty much perfect quote from Draftexpress
his body is tuned and he's stronger now up top compared to when he was drafted, he has avoided putting on extra weight in other areas to keep his leaping and agility prime...
pretty much perfect quote from Draftexpress
In terms of physical attributes, Augustine has an ideal package of what scouts usually look for in an NBA power forward. He is a lefty with good size at 6-10, an excellent frame, a nice wingspan, and more than enough athleticism to get the job done. Augustine is extremely agile, running the floor well--especially in transition--having good quickness and footspeed and being able to get off the floor swiftly to rebound, block shots and especially dunk.

Thief,
Between Augie and Gortat, which do you think is stronger and more athletic (taking basketball skill out of the equation)? I always thought it was Gortat, but now that I think about it, I don't know why I've thought that.

Re: Why not Augustine as our backup PF?
Gortat is definitely stronger, and he is the more likely of the two to get hit in the head with a hammer full onand continue to play ball. Augustine is the clear winner in terms of "athleticism", his agility, foot speed and hops are very up there, we just don't get to see this. Gortat is no slouch though, he has solid attributes for his size.

Re: Why not Augustine as our backup PF?
Gortat, only because he's being groomed, so we'll see a log of him. Gortat has the chance to be one of the more dominating big men in the league right now, just because of his mentality mixed with his size and ability.

I didn't know you were that optimistic about him. I hope you're right.
