OT: Clippers tried to trade for Zach Randolph

Post#1 » by campybatman » Sat Jul 12, 2008 6:24 am

I thought Randolph worked best in a half court offense. Isn't the coaching style of D'Antoni an up tempo offense? Because I recall that Portland was willing to trade Telfair to Boston in part because of his contrasting style with Randolph. Telfair wants to run.

This trade could allow New York to keep Lee and free themselves of Randolph's salary. However, after reading this, I can see what New York is thinking here. Still, too bad, again, for the Clippers. Randolph probably is a better option than Okafor who's said to be less of a power forward than he's a center. Josh Smith could make sense too, but he isn't worth a team overspending to sign him. Let the Hawks do that.

Terms of any proposal were not known, but the Clippers have enough salary-cap space to accept Randolph's contract without having to give the Knicks equal salaries in return. The Clippers, seeking to replace the departed Elton Brand, were trying to take Randolph off the Knicks' hands while offering little more than cap relief to New York, the sources said. Randolph will make $14.7 million next season, and he has three years and $48 million left on his contract.

While the Knicks are known to be interested in clearing cap space by 2010 to make a run at LeBron James or other potential free agents, the sources said New York wanted more than simple cap relief in exchange for Randolph. The Knicks appear to believe that Randolph will provide a highly productive season under new coach Mike D'Antoni, which could raise his value much higher than it is today. That's why the Knicks were not interested in nearly giving away Randolph's contract, according to the sources.

The Knicks have to be the most dumb team ever.
They could have cleared so much cap room.

Talk about greed or pushing it. I mean wasn't the talk from the end of this season and entering the off season about New York moving the pricey contracts of Randolph, Curry and Marbury, if possible. I don't get this stance by the Knicks. This trade makes sense for both teams. I believe Walsh will regret this by the trade deadline because New York will likely have to take back another team's bad contract unless a third team's involved. Randolph for Thomas and Mobley makes too much sense not to pull the trigger on it.

You would think Donnie would move Zach without hesitation, but he apparently was the one who declined. Curious. I'm trying to find out what the Clippers offered -- there's very little on their roster and, as you guys have already noted, Tim Thomas and Cuttino Mobley both expire by 2010. But, again, the salary doesn't need to match in this case so that's not a concern. Newsday

It is believed that Walsh was hoping to pry Eric Gordon, the seventh overall pick in the NBA draft, as part of the deal. That move seems unlikely, but it is expected that Walsh will talk again with the Clippers, who also are participating in the NBA Summer League here. Newsday

Also, this is as much of a no-brainer as the Nets reportedly declining an offer by Cleveland to trade the expiring contract of Szczerbiak for Carter. I don't get these teams. They hold out hope that they can still get something "better" for them.

These are two opportunities lost by the Nets and Knicks. I guess they don't want to be the team that helped to put another team over the top. If that's the case, then I can understand New Jersey's thinking but not New York.

You gotta hand it to Dolan though, that team gets a blank check - he must light cigars with 100 dollar bills. Forget hoops for a minute, with the lux tax that would save him almost 30 million just this year.

I can't understand why the Knicks wouldn't move Randolph for just about anything. Just get his salary off the books.

This team just needs to try and move Randolph, Richardson, Curry, Jefferies, James. And get whatever they can for the guys. Just start over and build around Gallanari, Lee, Crawford, Duhon. And trade Robinson, Collins, Chandler if they have to get rid of the other guys.
