Post#1 » by from_ro_to_dirk » Sat Jul 12, 2008 2:00 am

No one made a thread for Game 1 of the Mavs' Summer Leage season. Here is my last second attempt.

Dallas Mavericks vs. Los Angeles Clippers

Discuss.

I can't watch this game, although I really want to, because I don't have NBA TV. NBA.com isn't streaming the NBA TV games, so I'm left hanging after looking forward to this game.

Any updates from you guys would be greatly appreciated. Particularly about Gerald Green, Al Thornton, and Eric Gordon.

Green had a nice steal and dunk to get the Mavs first points.

End of 1st Q 21-18 Clips.

Clips led by double digits till the end.

9 pts 3 rebs for Singleton. He's hit from inside, midrange and a 3!

Foster - first pro shot: made 3!

Nobody else can shoot. Frahm has had some ugly 3s.

Ugly first half, Singleton is solid, Green not playing so well, 2/8 from the field. There is not one guard on that roster who has good court-vision, so they're not gonna share the rock effectively, Sow and Foster has to make for themselves. I like Terry"s defense, and he has 4 rebounds. Thornton will be a borderline all-star.

I don't know who the pbp guy is, but he is the worst pbp man I've ever listened to. He doesn't know anybody except Nick Fazekas.

Not a great start, but he picked it up, he tries hard, he hustles, try hard on defense, active hands, i'm not too impressed with his play, but the fact that he tries hard makes me optimistic. On a second thought, of course he tries hard, it's a summer league team, that's a wake up call for him i think.

Less than stellar performance for most of the Mavs players. Gerald shot just 4-11, though offensively wasn't forcing too much, was moving the ball, feeding the post well, and didn't turn it over. His shot simply wasn't on tonight, and when that's the case with Gerald, he's going to be pretty useless. Defensively I was impressed how he defended a few breaks/handled guys driving into him, though he of course committed a few dumb fouls. Was disappointed in the lack of rebounds, I pray that the Mavs drill rebounding into his head.

His ball handling is still as horrible as I last saw him with the Celtics. In fact, I don't think there's a swingman in the league that has worse handles. One instance that stood out was Gordon playing him close, his response was to dribble back and back and back until Gordon cornered him near the backcourt so he panicked and tried to plow his way back and got a bailed out by the zebras.

It's only one game though so I'd like to see the rest of SL to know if he's really turned the corner like what the coaching staff is saying. But so far this is typical scrub play from Gerald.

Please tell me that McLeod does not make this team. That jumper he launched in the first quarter dented the backboard. Don't ever run plays for Gerald Green, but I think he can play the Bruce Bowen roll, hit the open three and finish on the fast break. I liked what I saw in Shan Foster, but I think he should look for his shot more this Summer League. I want to see more Derrick Low, because the other two point's cant play. Frahm Sucks, lets hope he looks better playing with Kidd, because I think he is going to make the team. Carlisle seems to like him? Overall I was very dissapointed.

The best player was Eric Gordon, by a landslide!!!!! He probably should have been the number 3 pick.

Mc Leod <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< Barea

He's an orrible player,he's selfish,no defence,bad offensive choises.Waive him immediately.

His plus/minus was -25,with Miles on the floor,+10 Mavs.....

I pray Kidd's back up will be JJ.
Keith really sucks.

I agree with most of your assessment. I don't like McLeod, he is like a dribbling machine. I hate PGs who over dribble.

Gordon was the best player on the floor although Thornton was perhaps as good.

Green seems to be able to lose his man off the dribble (which is shakey) however he has no idea what to do once he does lose his man. It seems as if he slows down or stops and allows his man to recover instead of continuing and finishing off the play. He is hesitant after he makes the initial move. He is lightning quick on that move but once he crosses the man over and starts getting by the man he slows down and doesn't seem to know what to do. He does have a nice stroke when he does not force up a bad shot. Again you can see the talent but his basketball I.Q. is not there yet. Also how is it possible for a long lankey 6'8" guy with a supposed 48" verticle leap not able to rebound at all. This guy should be pulling down 6-7 rebounds per game. He is taller than Josh Howard and Howard is 5 times the rebounder he is.

Shan Foster looked O.K. he made a couple of nice passes and his shot looked fine though he was not in the flow of the offense quite enough. He also did not get enough minutes. Please let's replace Richie Frahm with Foster in the Summer League teams starting lineup. He also needs to stop standing around at the 3-pt line hoping that the ball comes his way. He needs to be more aggressive to get into the offense. I definitely wanted to see more of him.

Reyshawn Terry was a bit disappointing. He tried to attack the basket a couple of times and but he looked out of control and got bailed out with foul calls. He did not do much. He did not embarrass himself but he did nothing to stand out. The only outside shot I recall him taking was a 3-pointer which he made.

James Singleton probably had the best game for the team which is not saying much since the team looked awful. Singleton looked pretty good. He looks like he will be a scraper and he has a nice shot. Overall not bad. Since he and McLeod got signed only his money is guaranteed and thanks God. So far I would be happy having him as an emergency player on the 15 man roster. McLeod, not so much.

Pape Sow was disappointing as well. He was doing the common over-aggressive summer league play and picked up a ton of dumb fouls. Everybody did really. That is one of the annoying parts of watching summer league. Everyone is trying so hard to stand out as a hard nosed player that they just foul almost everytime down the court. I hope Sow picks it up in the next few games and shows better than he did in this game. We still need a 3rd Center on the 15 man roster.

Richie Frahm does not look like a good player for this summer league style. Maybe he would be better playing with Dirk and Jet and Kidd where they are the defensive focus and he would be left with open shots. He does have a good looking stroke but he only got one open shot and did knock it down. The other shots he took were forced and he did not make any of them. Anyway I was not very impressed with him so far. As I said I would rather they try to develop Foster than waste time with Frahm.

Nobody else stood out. Hope they come together better than that mess of a game.
