Best Defenders in the NBA

Post#1 » by PHILLYLOVE » Sun Jul 13, 2008 3:49 am

Was thinking today about the lack of great defenders in the NBA...so who do you all think are the best in the NBA.
Much easier to find good perimeter defenders than post defenders.

here are mine in no specific order
Kobe
KG
Prince
Battier
Bowen
Rondo
Livingston
Devin Harris
Russell Westbrook
Noah

Not to be a homer but I feel Brand belongs on that list (certainly if guys like Noah make it on there).

I also think Sheed is a great defender: both man and help.

The Days of truly great man on man defense is over. I hate the way the NBA calls the game nowadays . You can't even touch anybody anymore unless your name is Lebron. I wonder if M. J could play defense in todays game. MJ's hands were all over his man when he played D. THe NBA is like WWF now .

First you can take Westbrook and Noak right off that list. Both were great College Defensive players but have alot to prove before they are even mentioned.

This is a tough question since alot of the great defensive players are not stars. They are one/two trick ponies who make a living playing defense. If you are talking just "D" than Kenyon Dooling has to be in the conversation for PG. Shane Battier is another who MUST be on this list.

You missed an obvious one in Dwight Howard as well.

Defenses are more complex now. The zone defense wasn't implemented until '02, meaning Jordan never had to face it in his hey day. Personally, I think Jordan would've handled the zone with ease, but it would very interesting to see how he would fare against the Box and 1 that Boston shut Kobe down with in the Finals, Detroit's 1-2-2, etc.

Yes, Livingston is Shaun...he shut down Nash a couple of years ago in the playoffs...When he's healthy and guarding opposing points, he's a nightmare on D.

Whoever said Kobe doesn't belong needs to lay off the crack pipe, he's the best perimeter defender in the NBA when the game's on the line.

To call Yao the best defensive center is a joke and people need to realize that blocks are not a great indicator of great defense (Camby).

PG: Chauncey, Rondo (kidd aint what he used to be)
SG: Kobe, Michael Redd
SF: Battier, Prince, bowen
PF: Kevin Garnett
C: Tim Duncan

For whoever said Iguodala, he is a good 2 way player but straight up defensively he has regressed as his offensive load has increased. Sorta Kobe-esque until Kobe got back at it this year.
They say an analytics man doesn't have a heart, but I ran the numbers and nothing can be further from the truth - Sam Hinkie probably
