In Vegas: Coby Karl Knows the Keys

Rookie free-agent forward Pat Calathes left the Heat on Thursday to work with the Lakers' summer team.

He has not done well in with the Heat summer league, he recorded 2 DNPs and a 3 pts game in 3 games, but he didnt get much playing time.

I'm very familiar with Calathes going back to him in HS, this guy was expected to go in the middle of the second round, but obviously went undrafted.

I think he will surprise you guys with his shooting and passing. He's very skilled for a bigman with his height. He was underrated when he got to St. Joe's (right after jameer nelson left) and his underrated now, he's a 6'10"-6'11" player who can shoot and handle the ball like a pg, he used to play that position before he had a growth spurt.

Most mock drafts had him early to mid 2nd round, if he gets in the right system, I think he'll be very nice role player in the league.

I think his bro will be a better prospect than him, but pat's skills are so unique for his size and what he can do.

Scroll down, he guarded him the whole game and got him into 6 turnovers, didn't get to the line, and didn't shoot great. Karl didn't shoot well either, but got into the lane a lot and to the line a lot. Kid has some talent.

If he didn't theres no way he would be sticking around the team like he is. Big guys can be scrubs and stick around sometimes just because of size, but you never see wings and guards stick around if they can't play.

We should be blowing out a lot of teams next year so he will get a shot to show some stuff

I'm thrilled that Karl more than held his own against Mayo, but even more excited about how he lead his team to victory. He's aggressive with the ball, shooting it and taking it to the rack, but he's also playing unselfishly, dishing out assists but not turning the ball over. He's also playing a complete game by grabbing boards, getting hustle stats, and playing defense against the other team's best perimeter player.

I have very high hopes for Coby Karl. I like everything about this hardworking, no-nonsense, all-around skilled player. He's exactly what this team needs, and an ideal partner for Kobe imho.

Second game in a row where Coby Karl guards the opponent's best player, and arguably outplays him - the Sixers' Thaddeus Young. I can't recall too many baskets Young scored on Karl - it was miss, miss, miss. When another defender was on him, Young scored much easier. Karl anticipates his moves well, cuts him off, and uses his long arms to contest Young's shot. Considering Young's build, size, and length, overall athleticism, that's remarkable. Karl even mixed it up by drawing a charge on Young. Young was frustrated enough to give a hard foul (hitting Karl in the face) at the other end.

That's a fairly wide range of players Coby has guarded well - Mayo is a combo guard and Young is a flex forward. And Karl's done remarkably well guarding both kinds of players, quicker than him, stronger than him, but Karl has demonstrated some veteran savvy as well as surprising athleticism of his own.

On offense, Karl is the Lakers' best balhandler and passer, despite playing small forward positionally. He probably should have played point guard because the Lakers were absolutely miserable otherwise, throwing bad pass after bad pass, getting trapped by the Sixers full court pressure. Karl was the escape valve on many possessions bailing out the Lakers backcourt. He had many great passes inside that the Lakers frontcourt didn't convert, as they were largely outplayed by Speights, Young, and Smith. But Karl has emerged as THE playmaker for the Lakers.

Karl also showed his great stroke from 3, as well as a quick front step - Young had no chance staying in front of him. Karl was very aggressive going to the basket, getting to the line several times, and converting an and-one.

Overall, Karl is a very decisive player. He knows what he's doing out there. He got knocked down on the floor several times, but that didn't deter him. Big hustler, strong kid.

As an aside, Joe Crawford has played well too. Is an excellent scorer, would be a great punch off the bench. Excellent slasher, finisher.

But the guy who has the most responsibilities on both ends of the floor is Coby Karl, and he's emerged as one of the best players in the summer league. The summer league competition might not be NBA level, but the players who Karl has matched up with are legit NBA talent who'll have major roles this coming season.

We might consider giving Karl one.

Karl has been nice for the summer league team. His d had picked up from last year. Crawford I am not to impress with...
