FL Today: Dooling insulted by Magic offer (pg 5 update)

Post#1 » by drsd » Mon Jul 14, 2008 7:13 am

The Orlando Magic have offered Keyon Dooling a contract, but it likely isn't enough for him to return and back up starting point guard Jameer Nelson.

Magic General Manager Otis Smith said Sunday that the club has offered Dooling the biannual exception, a two-year deal worth about $3.8 million or $1.9 million per season. Dooling made almost that much last season ($3.5 million).

I doubt he comes back. I would definitely like it though. Hey Soul where did you get the picture of Carnage from?

I expect that Dooling will get a better offer, but I would indeed like to see him return -- especially at that price.

What's up with that? He deserves more, and the Magic need a decent guard.

The Nets or Warriors are likely to offer more. Even if Turiaf takes Golden State's offer, I think they still have about $4 million or a little more to spend. The Nets have more than $2 million left after paying Najera. The Clippers might have some space if they don't manage to lure Josh Smith, Emeka Okafor or Andre Iguodala, but I have gotten the impression from what he has said about his time there, that Keyon would not want to return to the Clippers. Don't know the other teams who have interest. Cleveland maybe?

Miami has that same exception to offer someone. Haven't seen him linked to Miami in recent news stories, but that doesn't mean Riley isn't talking to him. Supposedly Ty Lue is in the mix for that in Miami, but he's going to choose between the Heat, Suns and Celtics. Schmitz's story lists him as possible here, but apparently, Lue doesn't have Orlando on his list. I think the Suns and Celtics are offering only the vet minimum.

Though it sounds low, apparently it's not like people are lining up to sign him. If they were, he'd be gone already.

If Pietrus signs for the MLE, Dooling could seemingly be in this range. And realistically, it's not like $4 mill per year is exactly peanuts.

On the other hand, I thought Diop's signing would throw things out of kilter all over the place.

(by the way, new to the boards, been lurking a while and thought I'd finally speak up.)

Not a good sign. Although I don't think he's worth much more then that. I'd say Dooling has played his last game in a Magic jersey.

Did we renounce him & I missed it? If not, we have his Bird rights & don't have to use an exception on him.

i think dooling is a bit unlucky in the situation with magic.
a) now we have 4 SGs, his combo skills are not required.
b) we'd prefer a pure PG to sub Jameer.
c) otis does not want to go into luxury tax this season for dooling
d) end of next season, for hedo's extension, he wants to save some $$
e) a trade involving kebo and/or jj for a backup PG makes much more financial sense.

so, yes, magic has his bird rights and otis can give him as much as he likes but would like to stay under luxury tax treshold.

God, Schmitz is a jackass. The Magic may have only offered him $1.9m per season, but how many times does it need to be pointed out to him that we don't need to use exceptions on our own free agents? I have seen that people have pointed it out to him so many times in replies to his blog, but the guy either doesn't acknowledge them, or is arrogant enough to think that the fans out in the world couldn't be right and he wrong.

Personally I think it is doubtful that Dooling signs, but not completely out of the question. He does have a family settled in Florida, and if Otis has been open, honest and respectful about why they have not offered him more, he may be more receptive to the lower salary. Also, he is only 28 - when his contract expired he would still be in a position to get another 3 or 4 year deal somewhere.

Anyhow, that was me with my optimistic hat on. I really hope he stays, but can see why he might not.

According to a NJ newspaper, the Nets want Dooling but they dont want to pay him the same he made last year which was around $3.5 mill. They want him for alot less, so his market is probably not as strong as he expected. The Magic offer might turn out to be more competetive than people think.

Deshawn Stevenson all over again? Except maybe (we hope) Keyon will take the deal on the table from Orlando before they sign someone to replace him, and he ends up having to take a minimum deal elsewhere...?

Yea that could def be the case. One thing is that Dooling seems to love the city and the team. He still talks like he is part of the team.

Also BS had this to say:

Smith has been working the phones, and apparently, two of the team’s four shooting guards --- Keith Bogans and J.J. Redick --- and power forward Brian Cook are being offered in trade scenarios.

So Otis is seeing what's out there trade wise.

I'm surprised to hear that Dooling isn't drawing more offers. This free-agent class is incredibly thin in terms of point guards, and he's a very serviceable player at that position. Not starting quality, but more than fair as a backup. I'd love to have him back, especially given our current situation.
