Iguodala being courted by Clippers

Post#1 » by phillyborn_jacksonite » Mon Jul 14, 2008 3:08 pm

This was not great news to see on the Wiretap today. I shouldn't be surprised since he started to show a little greediness last year by not taking BK's offer. I beleive that decision helped us in getting Brand so i am not too disappointed about that turn of events.

However if the clips were to dumb enough spend their remaining 12 mil on Andre i would be disspointed in him if he took it. We finally have a chance with Brand now and he doesnt have to be 1st banana which he proved is not his strength once Prince shut him down in the playoffs. Hopefully this is all speculation and he stays here.

any thoughts on loyalty or greed in the Iguodala world? :-?

or possible replacement at SG. i think we would compensate by starting willie again(ugh) and sliding thad into the starting 3 spot but we would weakened by andre's absence

If all they have to offer is 12 million than they are wasting their time. Sixers wouldn't let him walk for 12 million.

not possible. Elton was free to sign with any team he pleased. Iggy doesn't have that option.

I will be absolutely devastated if we don't match any offer.

How is thread moving so slowly? This is big news. I personally hope the Clippers don't offer a max contract, because I don't see them doing a sign and trade, and I don't want to have to pay Iggy $12 mil to open with.

If the Clips do pass over him, as I think they will, then we'll have all the bargaining power, and just work to give him a decent contract and make sure he doesn't take the qualifying offer.

SF1976, you got any info?

Gotta disagree... Everyone figured he would get $10-11M... While I prefer to not have to match a $12M offer, it's not the end of the world... Our financial flexible is gone now that we've signed Brand, so the extra $1M is too hard to swallow... At this point, there is no scanario in which I see him not being matched (therefore, not big news)...

"That's a guy we have to have," said Brand, who repeated: "Management has let me know they'll match any offer."

I didn't see this thread so I'll just copy and paste from the dupe....

If LAC plans to offer Iguodala 5 years/$70MIL, then Ed should do with Dre as he did with K-Mart and the Nuggets a few years ago: tell the Clippers you plan to match, work out a sign-and-trade, and get back a $12MIL exception and some first round picks.

With the big exception and extra picks, the Sixers should be able to acquire either a shooting guard who can shoot at a price that doesn't break the team's future. Remember, it was BAD contracts that got into the mess we just got out of... there's no reason to pay Iguodala that kind of money.

correction. It was bad contracts for old players who were on a fast decline in their careers. Iggy's best years are in front of him, not behind him. 20/5/5/2 24 year olds are not a dime-a-dozen.

Match any offer.

If we did a sign and trade, the last thing I want are 1st round picks. Our team is young enough. We should no longer be stockpiling draft picks.

I want something of immediate value. And even then, there's no way we're going to get a fair price for Iggy, even if you include the FA we could get with the saved money.

There is a positive to it though if the Clippers DO offer a contract to Iggy and he accepts. When we match it, we no longer have to worry about him just signing a qualifying offer and leaving next year, which is my greatest fear.

"all they have to offer is 12 million" and you don't think that's a significant amount?

That's A LOT more than the Sixers thought he was worth last offseason. 12 million to start (assuming normal yearly increases) means you will be paying over 14 million on average. Way too much IMO. He's not woth that. We offered a deal that averaged around 11 mil last year. Going up 3 mil/yr is a huge jump in what you feel someone is worth.

Honestly, if that winds up being the price for Andre, I let him walk. You can do a lot of other good things with the 8.5 mil it would free up in cap space. Over paying for Andre will only set us back longterm. Heck, if we pay that much, we won't really have any space next year despite Miller being a 10 mil expiring contract.

I don't think that anybody expects us to be under the cap next year - so, Miller's expiring contract does nothing for us (unless we can unload it at the trading deadline for somebody like, say, Hinrich). The ONLY way that I see us not matching an offer for Iggy is if we are VERY SURE that we will have a replacement at SG this year who is not named Willie Green or Louis Williams.

Personally, I would be shocked if Iggy gets LA's offer sheet over Okafor or Smith.

I know it cant happen because of the trs restriction but how ironic would it be if they made an offer and we opted to do a sign and trade.......for Baron.

You're all right, this isn't news and I'm sure the Sixers will resign him no matter what the price, however, the Clippers are going to do their best to give us a big "screw you" by offering a large deal to Iggy that we will have to match just to get back at us for Brand. Hopefully Iggy doesn't want to participate in such a thing. If they go after Lou-Will then we really know they're out to get us

per Hoopsworld...

Slightly concerning comments by Andre...

Iguodala And Deng: If you talk to enough agents there is one area of free agency that really gets agents, and ultimately players, upset – restricted free agency. The agents have cried foul over the application of restricted free agency since its introduction to the NBA, citing that the manner in which teams negotiate, or really lack of negotiation is borderline collusion – basically accusing teams and the league of conspiring to keep player values down in the mechanics of the process. 76ers forward Andre Iguodala told HOOPSWORLD he was thrilled the 76ers signed Elton Brand, but was not as thrilled with how his contract talks are going. Iguodala said he couldn't understand the reluctance from the 76ers given how much they just gave Elton Brand, and that he had to keep his options open. Options that include meeting with the LA Clippers, the only team with enough cap space to make a real offer. Elton Brand is telling media members that the 76ers have told him they will match any offer Andre gets, but the manner in which its being handled has not sit well with Andre and that's not necessarily a smart move. Iguodala wants to be a 76er, but the process has not been fun for him and has created doubt about his role with the team going forward.

Hold on a moment. Let's think about this. I'm one who's not completely convinced that Igoudala is the right SG for this team now that brand is here. However, this guy is a very good player and I'd keep him if the price was right.

If we commit to Igoudala we do so long term. And for a lot of money. Is this what we want to do?

Please correct me if I'm wrong but if the Clips offer 12M and we let him go don't we get back the 8M+ cap hold to use either in a signing or a trade?

I guess my main point is this. Do we want to lock into Igoudala at his rate at that position for 5 or more years? If yes, I'm not disappointed, it's just that a decision will need to be made soon as the market sets his price.

I'm very skeptical of Iggy's loyalty but I hope he needs to get over this contractual bull for the betterment of the team. It's nothing new, but he better not sign.

Anyone else feel like Iguodala has gradually adopted a prima donna attitude in his years here?
