Which young player will make the most of his opportunity?

Post#1 » by campybatman » Tue Jul 15, 2008 2:05 am

That is, this is O'Bryant's second team and Gerald Green's fourth. One has only been in the league two seasons and the other has been in the league three seasons. Both players are only twenty-two and will make a modest salary for at least one season. I think it comes down to the type of support system in place for each player. Green is in his home state which may or may not add pressure. The pressure that O'Bryant might feel is from the notion that he wasn't played in Golden State. If he plays in Boston, he's left with no excuses. And neither player will be promised anything but they both have a lot to gain if they can turn it around and fast.

You'll like to root for both players. But, I would be more concern about Green. You wonder where he is mentally. Hopefully, a veteran and proven head coach like Carlisle can help him to find himself. While O'Bryant will have Clifford Ray and Thibodeau to work with him, each taking a different approach.

The one good thing that is evident here is that they're both still young pieces of clay you can still mold into something productive.

Because it'll be too bad if they both find themselves on the back of a milk carton. Green was on there once already.

I hope Gerald finds his niche somewhere in the NBA and POB by default because he's a Celtic. Also GG threw down a sick dunk at SL today

I already know Green can`t play the game of basketball.

I haven`t seen enough of POB to have an opinion really, so I still have hope unlike with GG....

While I don't share the same overt Gerald hatred as many on this board, I agree. Hops do not a good ball player make.

I guess POB has the size advantage, but GG's had his moments in games. I don't think POB's had one yet. So I go with GG. On a right team and a lot more maturity, he can be a decent player.

^^I'll believe that when I see it...I may even pull a JoeBiscuit and disappear for a while if GG ever truly arrives...I think I'm safe, though!

I would think Green could find extra motivation from a comment made by his younger brother in an interview saying he's a better player when asked who's better between the two of them.

We're talking about the Celtics, so definitely POB.

POB has the chance to. There is less competition for backup minutes at C in Boston than on the wing in Dallas. GG is behind JoHo, Stack, and Terry on the wing. Not a good situation. POB is the only other legit center we have on the roster. Plus, he's gotten away from a coach who clearly didn't like him from week 1. Now, OB did not have the right attitude, but getting released can have a humbling effect on a guy. With proper conditioning, I like his defensive skill and inside touch, not to mention his size.

Gerald has a much steeper hill to climb. Not only does he face stiffer competition in Dallas, but he is nowhere near as skill-ready to play on the wing as POB is to play center. Gerald can really only shoot, despite playing in the NBA for 3 years already. POB can rebound, block shots, and at least finish garbage shots. GMoney will have to round out his game and show a lot more focus to make any headway in Big D.

GG is going to get time behind JoHo probably first SF off the bench. He's the athletic guy the need other than JoHo for Kidd to run with. he may find his niche there. POB on the other hand can learn some things about defence from KG and Perk. Offensively he can score on will if he gets deep enough. Only things he lacks is getting position, both on offense and defence, and our veterans can teach him that. he will only get better if he gets PT though, which he should at the C because we dont have anyone else. (a 6'7 big baby maybe)?
