Re: FIBA World Olympic Qualifying Tournament 2008
I hope Brazil qualify and refuse to allow Nene, Barbosa and Varejao join their Olympic squad. Arrogant, coat-tail-riding mofos. They ought to be playing. What's their excuse?
I want Germany to make it; I love the Nowitzki-Kaman frontline. I hope Canada make it, and I would expect Greece to qualify, though, I'd like to see the Slovenians progress, since they were more than mildly entertaining at Eurobasket '07.

Re: FIBA World Olympic Qualifying Tournament 2008
I see Greece, Slovenia, and Puerto Rico (homer pick) qualifying. Greece is the clear favorite and with the crowd backing them up should win easily most of its games.
Group A : Greece then Brazil
Group B: Germany then New Zealand
Group C : Slovenia then Canada (probably the closest group in the first stage could go either way)
Group D: Puerto Rico then Croatia (Croats had issues during preparatory scrimmages and are incomplete)
Crosses would then be:
Greece over New Zealand (Read above about Greece)
Germany over Brazil (Brazil is thin up front and the Germans have probably the best front court of the tournament)
Slovenia over Croatia (Should be an awesome game)
Puerto Rico over Canada (Another really good game but I think we can pull it out)
Semis:
Greece over Slovenia
Puerto Rico over Germany (in a scrimmage last week, PR bench beat Germany who was only missing Kaman. Dirk played 30 of the 40 mins too)
Finals:
Greece over Puerto Rico
Bronze:
Slovenia over Germany (should be another awesome game)

Just kidding found the OP post about 18 assists funny.
I hope you are not saying you didn't realize FIBA assists and NBA assists are officially two differently scored assists? I thought every basketball fan knew that.
LOOOL suure.
And where exactly did you get that formula from?
Sure NBA assists are way more liberal but it is in no shape or form a times 2 formula.
Going by Hollingers index for example which is ok i guess its 30% better not 100% lol. And even that is for Euroleague games only not against teams like Lebanon without a player over 205cm.
You can't be serious. You watch the game and count the NBA assists. Hollinger's "formula" doesn't mean a damn thing. It's NBA versus Euroleague AVERAGE. Not how much a player in FIBA would average if FIBA rules were the same as NBA rules.

Fernandez is currently 5th overall in assists in the ACB. Rudy’s 4.5 apg is excellent even for a point guard in Europe, but for a wing player like Rudy, it’s outstanding. Assists are recorded differently in Europe, and 5-6 apg in Europe is similar to averaging 9-10 apg in the NBA.

No, its not.
From Hollinger: http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/blog/ind ... inger_john
The reason this works is that there's a predictable relationship between a player's stats in the Euroleague -- the highest level of European basketball -- and what they'll be in the NBA. Crossing the Atlantic does the following to a player's results:
• Scoring rate decreases 25 percent
• Rebound rate increases by 18 percent (there are more missed shots in NBA play)
• Assist rate increases by 31 percent (Euro scorers are tightwads with assists)
• Shooting percentage drops by 12 percent
• Overall, PER drops by 30 percent.
5/6 Euroleague assists = 6.5/8 NBA assists

Re: 2008 FIBA Olympic Qualifier
The Hollinger formula is how much a player in the Euroleague might average when he goes to the NBA. Is it NOT the difference in how the assists are scored. Two completely different topics. Go look at FIBA rules on what constitutes an assist and then the NBA rules on it.
Steve Nash would not even get an assist when he passes to Amare on the pick and roll and he cuts to the basket, dribbles and dunks. That is NOT an assist in FIBA. Now you tell me that's a 31% difference.
What the hell? Hollinger NEVER said assists are 31% less in FIBA he said expect a player to average 31% more assists in the NBA. How can people not understand such a simple thing? He is NOT saying if you changed the rules in the Euroleague to the same as the NBA the assists would go up 31%.
THINK BEFORE POSTING PLEASE.

I have a feeling all 4 european teams will make it to the semifinals, but I'm not sure which 3 will qualify.

Re: 2008 FIBA Olympic Qualifier
Point 1. Hollinger IS saying that if you changed the rules in the Euroleague to the same as the NBA that assists would go up. However, ASSIST RATE is not the same thing as assists.
Point 2. Euroleague is not FIBA. Euroleague is the 24 best teams in Europe for a given season (think Champion's League), while FIBA play is often a rich nation dominating a developing one. This leads to statistical inflation (as seen on page 1 of this thread). There is no mathematical formula for projecting NBA stats to FIBA ones.
Suggestion: Lakers_4_Life... if you dropped the "holier than thou" typing style, you'd be involved in more thought provoking discussion.

Re: 2008 FIBA Olympic Qualifier
random question : Is Araujo´s "nickname" (like Ronaldo, Ronaldinho or Nene) really and honestly "Baby" ??? It says so on the homepage of the tournament .
Rasho is amazing btw. How you take 28 shots, hit 20 of them and not get a single FT as a 7 foot Center that is obviously involved offensively ? For Toronto he had 1,3 FTA the last 2 months where he averaged 15 a game, his career average is hovering arroun 1 a game . Talk about avoiding contact on offense
Played really well today though, had Dalembert in his pocket all game long.

Euroleague and FIBA assists are the same exact thing. They are scored the same exact way.
And anyone believing it is really just a mere 31% difference doesn't know anything about the stats. Hollinger is full of crap completely if he really believes that.
Jose Calderon NBA
http://www.nba.com/playerfile/jose_cald ... stats.html
NBA career 25.0 MPG 6.1 APG
last season NBA 30.3 MPG 8.3 APG
Jose Calderon FIBA 2007
2007 European Championship FIBA international competition with Spanish national team

24.9 MPG 2.6 APG
Jose Calderon's last season of Euroleague 2005

26.9 MPG 2.6 APG
Forgive me for thinking (obviously VERY wrongly) that on realgm.com posters might actually have the most basic of basketball knowledge. I won't make that mistake again as I now realize very few here know even the most common of things about the game.

Puerto Rico in the fist half against Cameroon has not only shot more but also made more three than two pointers. How's that for an odd stat.

Don't look now Puerto Rican fans, but at the ned of the 3rd Cameroon has cut the lead to 13 and Arroyo has only 1 foul to give...
