Prep Talent of Indy?

Post#1 » by MUpacersSIC » Tue Jul 15, 2008 4:15 am

On espn in the men's college section they have a list of eight of the best prospect cities in the country. I immediately thought Indy could be one of them, but to my disappointment they were not included. It says prospects in the last ten years, and I'm guessing they only chose people who have made it to the NBA and contributed at least moderately. So, who are some of the top prospects from the last ten years from Indy. Greg Oden, Mike Conley, Eric Gordon immediately come to mind, but I know there has to be more. Any ideas?

Scout currently has an article up on the Indiana Hoosier site about the huge amount of high school talent in the state of Indiana coming up over the next 3-4 years. It's mostly in relation to IU and their chances at getting the talent, but puts out some interesting names to keep track of nonetheless.

Too many names to quickly list.

May was from Bloomington.
Zeller from Washington
Bird from French Lick
Alford from New Castle
Randolph from Marion

The article was about the city, not the state. Oden, Gordon, and Conley would qualify, and McBob may or may not be included (from Carmel).

Off the top of my head, going back in history from Indy metro area, you'd have to grab Oscar Robertson, George McGinnis, Steve Downing, Tom & Dick Van Arsdale, Eric Montross, Rodney Carney, Billy Keller...
I have no idea what you're talking about, and clearly, neither do you.

Courtney Lee, Robert Vaden, Chris Thomas, George Hill, Rodney Carney all came out of Indy metro area within the past years as well.

Calbert Cheaney! Pride of Evansville! Also, one of the cooler names to grace the NBA.

Jared Jeffries-Bloomington
Devon Dumes- Decatur Central (I'm betting he will be IU's leading scorer this year)
David Teague- Pike
Jeff Teague- Pike
Eric Montross- Lawrence North
Jujuan Johnson- Franklin Central

In fairness to the article, it was limited to the past ten years and it was only cities...not states. Really the only legit NBA talent from Indy the past ten years resides in Oden, Conley, and Gordon. That is just off the very top of my head, so dont lambast me if I missed someone.

I think that ESPN.com article was just trying to field a team of 5 guys from each city to form an NBA lineup. I think if you ask most college/pro scouts, they would say Indy is easily among the top 8 prep basketball cities in the country. I mean, Seattle? Really?

Seattle had Martell Webster, Jason Terry, Spencer Hawes (I believe). They might be a little overrated, but that area is far from garbage.

Never said it was garbage. Just think Indianapolis is better.

The Seattle area is very strong in a number of different sports. I attended Long Beach Poly (huge school for athletics, education, future celebs, ect...) and each year they go up in that area for different sports, most notably football. Indy has had some strong prep talent recently but overall, it does not surprise me Seattle was ranked while we were not. If an area is strong in one prep sport, they are usually strong in others as well.
