IndyStar: Not going over luxury tax, looking for PF

Post#1 » by Scoot McGroot » Wed Jul 16, 2008 5:03 am

From Mike Wells latest Indystar.com Pacer Insider blog:
http://blogs.indystar.com/pacersinsider ... _over.html

Bird said he doesn't expect the Pacers to go over the $71.150 million luxury tax.

The Pacers are in the midst of trying to trade point guard Jamaal Tinsley and acquire a power forward while also watching their money.

"We're up around $69 million right now and we don't want to go over the tax," Bird said. "You always like to save some money, but the thing is, our owners are not going to save money and not have a productive team out there, especially when we did the deals we did this summer. I think it's being able to move some pieces to get the type of player we want at (power forward)."

Bird and general manager David Morway are actively working the phones trying to make a deal [Tinsley], but Bird said they aren't willing to give up any of their core players.

Interesting points here. The Pacers are still looking to pick up a PF, and are trying desperately to move Tinsley, but won't include any core players. I'm sure Foster counts as a core player, but does Shawne Williams?

Also, we won't go over the luxury tax. We have about $3 million or less to spend in that regards.

I like the thought process here. Keep up the good work Bird/Morway...its been a good offseason for so far.

After what Bird said about Williams I doubt he is a core player. I would only put the following on that list...

Granger
Dunleavy
Foster
Rush
Hibbert
Jack

Maybe Murphy although given his contract Bird would obviously be happy to deal him.

Interesting article, I like that the Pacers are trying to add without simply just writing a cheque.

Swap in Ford for Jack and its probably pretty accurate.

Wow totally forgot Ford was on the team, im blaming the MLB allstar game for this one.

They seem pretty high on Jack, he may not be a core player but I would be shocked if he was traded and/or not resigned next year.

It's good to see Bird is still trying hard. I'm sure they will land someone. I really want Carl Landry though, i think he would be a solid player. I think he has alot of potential of being one of those 2nd round pick players who can make a name for them selfs like a Micheal Redd. He has all the talent in the world and sopposetly a great kid too.

If we sign Carl Landry, we go over the luxury tax. A full MLE deal would put us about $3 million over the luxury tax, thus meaning a $3 million luxury tax payment, and we'd miss out on about $8 million in luxury tax distribution payments.

Carl Landry at the MLE would cost the Pacers $17 million this season. Is he worth it?

What kind of PF are they looking for? Could be anyone.

If we could do a sign and trade and still be under the luxury tax that would be ideal. I agree that Landry has alot of talent is is a great defender. Maybe Houston has some interest in Tinsley/Daniels/Williams? I would give up anyone combo of those three and a 2nd round pick for Landry.

If we could get Landry for a Tinsley/Williams package, I'd be amazed. We'd have to take on Steve Francis because Landry would be BYC, and that would mean we'd take on about $1.8 million in salary, putting us right against the luxury tax, but not over it. I'd be relatively ok with that, even though I don't think Landry should get the full MLE yet after only playing about 40 games in the NBA.

Here's a list of some Free Agents with their status that could conceivably be in our price range:

    Name Team Status
Malik Allen Dallas Unrestricted free agent
Chris Andersen New Orleans Unrestricted free agent
Matt Barnes Golden State Unrestricted free agent
Primoz Brezec Toronto Unrestricted free agent
Kwame Brown Memphis Unrestricted free agent
P.J. Brown Boston Unrestricted free agent
Austin Croshere Golden State Unrestricted free agent
Michael Doleac Minnesota Unrestricted free agent
Nick Fazekas LA Clippers Restricted free agent
Pat Garrity Orlando Unrestricted free agent
Othella Harrington Charlotte Unrestricted free agent
Robert Horry San Antonio Unrestricted free agent
Juwan Howard Dallas Unrestricted free agent
Nenad Krstic New Jersey Restricted free agent
Raef LaFrentz Portland Unrestricted free agent
Carl Landry Houston Restricted free agent
Randolph Morris New York Unrestricted free agent
Scott Pollard Boston Unrestricted free agent
Michael Ruffin Milwaukee Restricted free agent
Brian Skinner Phoenix Unrestricted free agent
Kurt Thomas San Antonio Unrestricted free agent

OK...some are out of our price range, but maybe we could figure something out. Some are probably out of our price range, but I wouldn't pay more than a Travis-Deiner-Type Contract for them.

I've tagged some interesting possibilities in red. Brown, Howard, or Thomas, I think would be ideal, but very, very long shots. They likely would not be interested on playing for anyone othter than a contender. None of them seem to be long term answers.

Landry would be great, seems highly unlikely at this point. Krstic would be a good second choice, but he'll eventually get the full MLE from someone. Kurt Thomas and Kwame are both likely outside of our price range.

I'd probably take a look at LaFrentz. he can shoot and block shots, and brings a lot of experience. He's had his share of injuries, but I think he's good enough and would come cheap enough to be worth signing.

The only guys I would be intrested in off that list are:

Matt Barnes
Nenad Krstic
Carl Landry
Brian Skinner

and maybe

Austin Croshere (just cuz I love that guy)

That is a good list. Some of those people you named such as Matt Barnes would not fill the power forward need however. I would love to get a guy like Kurt Thomas, but I doubt he has a whole lot of interest coming to Indiana.
