Rookies: Impressed with Morey

I looked back a few pages and didn't see a thread like this; but with Donte Green's performance last night I realized just how impressed I am with Daryl Morey in regards for getting maximum potential out of low draft picks and finding good rookie pieces to add to the team.

You look at 2007/2008: Luis Scola (acquired via trade for cash and a disgruntled player); Aaron Brooks (work in progress, but good for the future); Carl Landry (a steal with a bought pick); and Mike Harris (undrafted).

Now in 2008 Green had a great debut, and we still have Dorsey to check out. If they both make the roster and contribute in some way, then that's pretty good value for the 25th pick.

Good job by the GM so far in his early run. If only the Astros had someone like this...

I think Morey has done a good job drafting and managing the roster with what little tools he has available. I was impressed when he was able to obtain Scola from a division rival (at a time when our PF spot was weak) and how he was able to attain the player he wanted at his pick and obtain another pick in the process this past draft. I also like how Morey has a long-term view in managing the team's salaries and not caving in and giving up the future to win now (the team no longer is carrying any dead weight).

And although while I know it's fun, try not to get too hyped about our prospects. Scola you pretty know what you're getting, but I do not expect Landry or Brooks to be anything more than career back-ups and Harris is nothing special. The jury is still out on Greene. I'm not impressed with a summer league game, and scoring has always been his calling card anyway.

That's the most critical point. Lots of guys can evaluate basketball talent and how players fit into schemes. Not many guys can do that without bungling the cap, whether out of self-interest at short term "production", owner influence, or just plain inability.

Let's not jump to a conclusion. Drafting and team management are two different things. Let's see how Steve Novak, Aaron Brooks, Carl Landry (if he stays with the team), Donte Greene, and Joey Dorsey turn out in the next couple of years. I still have my doubts on Morey's vision on rookies.

It was only one summer league game... Look how well brooks played last year in the summer league compared to the regular season same deal with JL3
