td00- you do you know that Childress and Smith count as 18 million against the cap right now?
And no 8 million dollar player will make the Hawks a contender. Thats why the Hawks aren't going to even spend the MLE if they bring Childress back. I don't think the Hawks have a plan for becoming a championship contender honestly. They don't have the core to do it. They just want to be a consistent playoff team and hope they get lucky with a trade, draftpick, or that Horford or Smith become superstars to take that next step.
And Iverson is on the downside but not any more than Bibby! Iverson is flat out better than Bibby.
So let me guess....Camby wasn't an option

No it was never an option.
Camby's salary is 10M. In order to make this deal we would have had to do the following:
Give Memphis a 1st round pick to take Zaza off our hands.
Renounce Josh Smith and Josh Childress.
Make the trade with Denver. Be at the cap level again.
Resulting lineup:
Bibby/Law
JJ/Mario
Marvin/Jeremy
Al/Solomon
Marcus Camby
That's it. IMO, Josh Smith, Josh Childress, and Zaza Pachulia >>>> Marcus Camby.
As far as the luxury tax holding us down, well sure. The trade for Bibby mortgaged the flexibility this season, but we needed to do something to get the team to the playoffs. The experience was more valuable to the roster than any free agent addition. I wouldn't trade that playoff experience for cap room.

kb, obviously I don't understand all the cap rules as both Joshes are as big an impact to a team trying to add players as you can get. What I am saying is that there just doesn't seem to be a lot of forward thinking to get more reliable bodies in here. If the Joshes are in the plans long term, why is this an issue at this point? Is it about saving every $$ and not making a commitment? I would think that one of the Joshes should have been resolved by this time. We will deal with this again next year with Marvin, and JJ and Al are right behind that. To me, it doesn't look very promising in getting veteran help to go along with the current core. Bibby and Speedy definitely are the crutches in this salary structure.
If you could, kb or evil, please explain how much the Hawks do have to spend now? I see that there may be a couple of minimum contracts to be had after our discussions.
My main concern was always about Woody and what he does for this team. I disagree on him coming back, yet I understand. Sometimes it is better to stay consistent than giving up on another coach. We have seen quite a few come through here. If the ASG thinks that we haven't seen the best of Woody, than we have to be content with the decision.
I still think Smoove's relationship with Woody is a factor in this matter. Smoove is down to playing 2 cards now, and the ASG has got to be ecstatic with the summer FA offers that didn't take place.
All I care about is having an opportunity to win in this league and trying to make this a place that players want to come play here. This town could be such a great basketball city if we could get the management to understand that. Present some buzz to the fans during the offseason, that would be refreshing.
There are only 2 areas to improve your team each year, and we are heading towards ignoring the FA market for an impact reserve like we ignored the draft. We have been told by the management team that we don't want to bring in any more young guys. Well, please tell me what experience is left out there? By experience, I would hope someone could find a playoff experienced player that would happily come in hear and play a reserve role behind these young starter. As I expressed before, I truly only see room for one player to come in.
Evil, appreciate you putting out a scenario that would have to take place. In previous conversations about Camby, I don't believe that so many things needed to take shape for that to happen, and that was even after Bibby arriving. But Camby would/could be such a nice complement and this isn't a track-type team.
I guess somewhere along the line, the ASG has stated they will not go over the luxury tax. Now, how many teams are successful in the long run without doing that? The Spurs might be the exception, but it is rare.

td00- we don't know how much money the Hawks can spend wihtout going into the luxury tax until Childress and Smith are dealt with. But its certainly possible the Hawks only intend to add guys on minimum salary deals if both are retained.

Which is what the vast majority of teams that don't luck into a Duncan or Shaq have to do.

right- I think that by far the best way of building a championship contender is to rebuild and stay in the lottery for a few seasons and hope you draft your superstar. The Hawks had their chances and whiffed, now they are stuck with the decision of breaking it up and going back into the lottery or likely settling for being a middling playoff team. (and this is after lucking out with the pingpong balls to get horford)
THe pistons were able to do it without a superstar. The Celts were able to take the next step with a trade. Its just hard to have a PLAN to do it that way.
