Is There Still Hope To Get Josh Smith?
http://www.sportingnews.com/blog/the_sp ... k_to_hawks
According to this article, Smith doesn't want to play for Woodsen. Tht being the case, IF it looks like a team is going to throw serious cash at Iguodala, is it worth contemplating a possible sign and trade for Josh Smith?
The first thing most of you are probably thinking is this; Smith is a PF/SF and we need a SG. But we were planning on moving Iguodala to SG anyway - and it can be reasonably argued that Smith has more of a scorer's mentality and quicker first step than Iguodala.
Now let's talk value. Would Smith for Iguodala be viewed as equal value? Both are young. Both seem to have nice potential. Iguodala is more sound defensively while Smith is more of a scorer. However, Smith may have just devalued his stock by letting it be known that he doesn't want to play for Woodsen. On the other hand, at this point, Iguodala still looks like the good soldier - I stress "at this point" because that could change fast if negotiations continue to sour.
So would an Iguodala swap for Smith be appealing to both parties? I know as much as I like Iguodala, I wouldn't mind having Smith's explosiveness at SG. I would also think that the Hawks could be interested in another youth with major potential in Iguodala. Maybe even give them Evans too if that would make it happen...Possible future lineup - could it work?
PG: Miller, Lou
SG: Josh Smith, Green
SF: Thaddeus Young, Josh Smith
PF: Brand, Speights, Evans
C: Sam, Jason Smith
One last thing worth noting; Smith was really impressed when he visited here prior to us signing Brand. My guess is that Smith may be willing to settle for a little less to come here knowing how much we wanted him and knowing that we've got a chance to really make some noise in the East now that we have Brand.

Re: Is There Still Hope To Get Josh Smith?
There is absolutely nothing that suggests that Smith doesn't want to play for Woodson. It was a BS rumor started by Ric Bucher, this is all the SI reported.
Sekou Smith (Hawks beat writer) has already denied this claim. Also, Smith's FATHER called Sekou to tell him how false Ric's reports were. It's all just national media trying to stir up controversy, it has absolutely nothing to back it up.

IMO, getting Smith was a bad idea before we had Brand. At this point, with Brand here, it just seems ridiculous to play a guy out of position like you suggest. Smith isn't a ball-handler or natural shooter. We'd be in a very bad spot with him at SG.
If you want to talk about moving Iguodala for another good SG (say Monta Ellis) that seems like a much more reasonable debate.

Straight up talent evaluation aside, the reality is that Iguodala is a better SG than Smith is.

What pairing is better?
SF J. SMith + SG T. Young
SF T. Young + SG Dala
SF J. SMith + SG T. Young
SF T. Young + SG Dala

First off - Since the Clippers traded for Camby, no one can throw a ridiculous offer at Iguodala anymore, so there's no real reason we need to think about losing him as much anymore.
Secondly - Josh Smith at SG?! Come on - people were saying he wasn't even skilled on the perimeter enough to be a SF - and you're going to make him our starting 2? His horrendous shooting percentages make Iguodala look like Kyle Korver.
This shouldn't even be a discussion, we're not making any more significant moves before the season starts.

Agreed. excluding untoucables such as Kobe, Brandon Roy, etc, I don't think there's any possible way we could really upgrade from Iggy at starting 2 in terms of his overall package of scoring, on-ball defense, court vision, and potential. Honestly only Michael Redd or Joe Johnson are the only somewhat obtainable guys that might make us a little better on paper. We have more than enough firepower to do something special this year.

Is there truth to it? Sure there is truth to it if you mean 2-3 years ago. Back when Smoove attitude was a problem. Somethings have happen in that time spand. Smoove has grown up,got married, and had two kids. Also Smoove is one of the main reason Mike Woodson is still the coach of the Hawks because he wanted him back. I have a hard time understanding why he would want Woodson back if he didn't want to play for him.

Iguodala is a better ball handler, shooter and passer than Smith. I don't see the fit at all.

I'm with Cpops 100%. Could you picture Smith trying to help bring the ball up against pressure? Or how about him running curls off screens for jumpshots?
Brutal and brutal. I like the Monta Ellis idea though.

Re: Is There Still Hope To Get Josh Smith?
If we were to get Smith the most logical thing to do would be to start him at SF (yes, over Thad, Smith is much better right now). I would then start Lou at the SG spot. The 3-4-5 of Smith, Brand Dalembert can cover for Lou's inability to keep his man in front of him. Those other 3 guys can mask a lot of Miller/Lou's poor defense in allowing penetration.
Then you bring Thad off the bench for say 26-30 MPG (right now we have no backup there so this gives us solid depth at SF). You can play a basic 3 man PF/C rotation of Brand/Dalembert/Josh Smith. I would break the MPG down like this
SF (48 total min)
Josh Smith = 26 min
Thad = 22 min
PF (48 total min)
Brand = 30 min
Josh Smith = 12 min
Thad = 6 min
C (48 total min)
Sam = 32 min
Brand = 6 min
whoever is left of Ja. Smith/Evans/Speights (10 min)
In that scenario, everyone still gets significant minutes.
Josh Smith = 38
Brand = 36
Sam = 32
Thad = 28
Smith or Speights picks up the other 10 MPG
I would then seek out a deal using Evans or Jason Smith for an equal "talented" PG or SG. Evans for Carroll? Evans for Marcus Banks? SMith for a young PG or SG? My preference would be to use Evans first and keep both SMith and Speights.
If we acquire a backup PG via trade, then we use the vet min to sign a backup SG. If we acquire a SG via trade, then we use the vet min to add a backup PG.
Having said all that, why would Atlanta want Iguodala when they are stacked at SG and SF (assuming Childress is retianed)? Maybe somehow the deal could be expanded to send Atlanta one (or 2) of the bigs (Evans and/or Smith) and get Childress here. Childress could be the backup at SG to Lou. Gives us a big backup which would work well when Lou moves over to play some minutes at PG.

With less ballhandling, and a worse outside shot, and more reliant on getting to the rim. Iguodala's jumpshot will look like Mark Price next to Smith. I agree with sixer fixer that if we get Smith, it would be to play in Thad's spot, not to be a 2 guard.

S & T Iggy for Josh...can't see it. Three way trade w/Iggy to Hawks,Smith to team X,then a real SG to Sixers from team X? I guess it COULD happen but.......

You should have AT LEAST put Thad at the 2 and Smith at the 3. Anyway, this is a terrible idea. Iguodala is a better fit for this team by a large amount.

Lindsay: Well, did it work for those people?
Tobias: No, it never does. I mean, these people somehow delude themselves into thinking it might, but ... But it might work for us.
