Does anyone care that the front office gave up on Navarro?

Post#1 » by VinnyTheMick » Thu Jul 17, 2008 1:22 am

Looking back on things, why the hell did we trade this guy for Randy Johnson? I mean everyone knew Randy's best days were past him. I'd much rather have him as our backup catcher than Jose Molina. I'm happy we've moved away from star f_cking for the most part.

I don't know, just saying......

Navarro has bounced around a little. I'm not sure any GM ever thought he'd be an all-star, but kudos to him.

At the time I don't think anyone thought that was a bad deal. Navarro was a good prospect, but RJ was still a dominant pitcher we thought could be our Curt Schilling. Obviously he didn't have much time left, but you gotta give up something to get something.

When you trade prospects you never know how they will turn out. Everyone wants us to trade anyone now to get better, at the time we felt that trade made us much better. Also, we offered Cano in that deal and the DBacks turned it down. They didn't want Cano, so this could have been a lot worse.
All-Time Draft

PG- Oscar Robertson/Bob Cousy
SG- Earl Monroe/James Harden/Dana Barros
SF- Billy Cunningham/Michael Finley/Chet Walker
PF- Elvin Hayes/Dolph Schayes/Tom Chambers/Danny Manning
C- Walt Bellamy/Neil Johnston/Darryl Dawkins

Well I'd argue that many realized that RJ would not "dominate" in the AL. I & other Yankee fans had some reservations about trading for the guy. Thank God they didn't want Cano, though. Its not even about Navarro being an all star really, just that he would be a real upgrade over our current backup catching options right now.

Hey, if we were leading the division I wouldn't really care because we have some catching prospects in the minors but Navarro would be a welcomed addition to the roster at this point.

Would Navarro have ever developed behind Posada though? I like Molina, I think he's one of the best backup catchers in the league. He's stellar defensively, and offensively, he's just your average catcher batting around .230.

I like Molina too but I see him up to bat & I think we might as well be in the NL because the #9 hitter is an auto-out.

He has a career line of .261/.326/.375, he still isn't any good. Sure, he made the all-star team, but he isn't an all-star catcher (lets not forget Jason Varitek and Christian Guzman among others also made the team this year). He has a good BA this season, but his numbers to date are more the exception than the rule for him when you look at his entire career.

I'd argue that those numbers are skewed by the absolutely brutal season he had last year and the fact that he was playing as a backup with limited time through most of his career. He didn't really get a full-time starting job until last season. Let's not forget he was our star prospect for a little while there.

I always liked Navarro. As much as I liked him though, I was very much in favor of the RJ trade. We needed an ace, and even though I didn't think that he'd be as good as he was in Arizona, he did have a respectable first year and some nice moments sandwiched around that mediocrity we saw. We didn't have much in the pipe in terms of the farm at the time (Brad Halsey was our biggest pitcher at the time). We're just incredibly lucky it was Navarro and Halsey that we traded and not Cano and Wang.
