Can the Hornets win the Western Conference in 2008-2009?

Post#1 » by JordansBulls » Thu Jul 17, 2008 12:24 pm

Does anyone think the New Orleans Hornets can take the Western Conference Crown in 2008-2009?

Possible Lineup
PG CP3
SG Posey
SF Peja
PF West
C Chandler

They have the defense and offense up front, the outside shooting and the defense in the backcourt. Are they missing anything to win it all?

Posey would be a poor choice to start at SG. Whenever we played Posey with Pierce, Pierce would slide to the 2 spot. Posey will be a 6th man, they still need to find a starting SG. But they can win the west, even if they stick to what they have right now.

Outcomes of potential WCF matchups with Hornets:

Hornets vs. Lakers: Hornets win, Posey does good job against Kobe

Hornets vs. Spurs: Spurs win, SA is a year older but experience gets it done

Hornets vs. Jazz: Jazz win, Since CP3 and D-Will came into the league Utah is something like 9-2 vs NO

Hornets vs . Rockets: Hornets win, David west and Chandler would get the better of Yao

Hornets vs. Suns: NO owns Phoenix....period.

So basically given the 6 teams I think will be tops in the west i.e. Lakers, Spurs, Jazz, Rockets, Suns the Hornets win every series unless they face SA or Utah.......bookmark it.

If they stay healthy and the Lakers don't, then yes, they can.

they took us to 7 last year..they would have given the Lakers a better matchup if you consider health and offense..of course they're one of the favorites, especially with Posey..

Posey will be the 6th man im pretty sure, they are a SG away from being very very scary. That said even with a marginal SG they should be in the top 2-3 in the west fo sure.

Not right now... they don't have enough, which is because they need to improve in certain areas.

Main things being

Expansion of offensive creativity - 3rd creator other than Paul/West (West not being top-level, but not ordinary either) either starting, or off the bench and finishing games. Also better bench offense. These ultimately were exposed against the Spurs in the playoffs.

Getting a well-rounded wing-defender - Posey's definitely good overall defensively, but I don't think Posey can sufficiently enough guard quick wings man to man on a consistent basis, not being too quick laterally.

Better overall bench

They're pretty close, but not there yet, IMO. I just look at and consider their team from the playoffs to right now, and don't come away thinking, "title contender", "western conference winner".

No. The Hornets do not have a superstar. Now Chris Paul is a very good person, but he's not a superstar. He's not the best scorer and still needs to work on his shooting.

No. They'll make it to the WCF, but I just can't see them winning it.

I think the best route they can take is to trade Mo Pete for a backup frontcourt player, maybe Joe Smith from Cleveland and resign Bonzi as the starting two guard. The only problem with that though, is that they really don't have anyone to legitimately backup the two guard spot since Posey and Peja can't really play it all that well and Pargo is way undersized.

Paul/Pargo
Bonzi/Wright??
Peja/Posey
West/Smith
Chandler/Armstrong

That is a very solid lineup that would matches up well with every team in the west. I wouldn't be surprised at all to see them win the west. They are the worst matchup imo for the Lakers. Chandler can contain Bynum and Gasol's hands will be full trying to keep up with West. Bonzi and Posey will do a decent job on Kobe and FIsher will have a hard time keeping up with Paul.

Hornets would have a tough time against Houston due to having Yao/Scola/Landry/Hayes able to shut down West and Chandler.
