Are the Cavs after Ryan Gomes?

Post#1 » by DG4L » Thu Jul 17, 2008 3:19 pm

The paper here in Minneapolis says you guys could be after him.

The Wolves have not yet signed restricted free agents Ryan Gomes and Chris Richard or unrestricted free agent Sebastian Telfair. Several teams have pursued Gomes and negotiations with a team such as Cleveland could intensify now that Boston free agent James Posey has signed with New Orleans.

Gomes' agent likely is eyeing the full mid-level exception of $5.6 million for next season. If Gomes signs with another team, the Wolves have seven days to match the offer or let Gomes go.

I personally haven't heard anything about the Cavs going after Gomes until this article. But he'd definitely be an upgrade over Devin Brown. I'd hope the Cavs are going to at least see if they can acquire JR Smith, Childress, or Azubuike first. I'd put Gomes in the next group of guys along with Barnes, Krstic, or Pargo. After that I'd put Miles, Ross and Livingston.

What about Craig Smith? Is he definitely going to be a T-Wolve next year?

here is a thread on this and a possible s/t idea.

Craig Smith just resigned. So I guess we have 48 hours or so to know if it is for a s/t or not.

Gomes is just as good as Childress btw. He would be a scary good fit next to Lebron. He is a very smart player. Can play the 3 or the 4. Can shoot with legit range. Does not make many mistakes.

No way the Cavs do a sign and trade, they either use some or all of the the MLE to sign him and if he is any more expensive then that then I personally would pass on him.

I couldn't agree more. Him and LBJ would be a legtie and most unique pairing in the L. Those guys both have size and can shoot. Gome is a better shoot. Gomes also has excellent hands for those bullet passes AV is always muffing.

I just don't think that the Cavs are in need of a 3/4 tweener. Whats-his-name gets the majority of the minutes at the 3 and that Cavs really don't run plays or much of anything except the occasional dive to the basket for someone at the 4. The Cavs could definitely use a 2-3 tweener however.

Do the Cavs need a 3/4 tweener?
Of course not...

but they do need good basketball players..
more good basketball players..

let LBJ play a few minutes at the 2 and/or let Gomes play a few minutes at the 4

he's not a stat guy but he does a little of everything.. whatever it takes to win..
offensively Gomes is ALOT better than any of our 4's and his basketball IQ is pretty high

I have no problem with adding him but he is restricted

I said a s/t with Eric Snow. The wolves need a vet pg mentor. Snow would fit perfectly. It would allow you to s/t Gomes without using your MLE.

btw, Gomes is a 3/4 but he is a combo not a tweener. He can play both. He was easily our 2nd best player last year. I think he would fit the king well. He can create spacing, he has soft hands. Hustles, plays very good defense and rebounds. How is that a bad fit for Lebron? Pick and pop anyone?

Gomes for Snow S&T and using part of the MLE on a backup SG or PG wouldn't be a bad offseason at all. Assuming we re-sign Delonte as well. Our 15-man roster could be something like:

Z / Varejao
Wallace / Smith / Hickson / Jackson
James / Gomes / Beck
Wally / Pavlovic / part of MLE
West / Gibson / Jones

And then sometime between December and February trade Wally, Andy, and maybe someone/something else for a legit SG.

Snow is basically retired due to injury. He has filed all the paperwork and now both he and the Cavs are waiting to see what they should do with his contract. The fact that he is retiring makes his expiring contract valuable both to the Cavs (shedding salary) and to teams looking to dump salary themselves as they can trade for him and then he immediately retires meaning that team wont have to pay him a dime. There is, however, no chance that E Snow will play another minute in the NBA.

His expiring contract is nothing much considering that you would not get the player of Gomes value from that expiring contract. The reason the wolves would be interested in him is due to his experience. Snow could be the 3rd string pg. Spend the season on the bench as more of a coach for the young guards.

I did not know that the papers were filled for the retirement already.

Its not worth much to a team like the TWolves, but to a team that is over the cap and is looking to avoid paying the luxury tax it is worth quite a bit. Regardless, Snow's playing days are done and now its just a waiting game to see when and with what team his official injury retirement kicks in.
