Spencer Hawes: future all star?
Spencer Hawes has been looking good in summer league. Mind you, I already know that you can't judge players solely off their performances in summer league. Hell, I remember Jason Kapono being MVP of the summer league a few years back.
With that being said, Hawes seems to have some really nice post moves. I like his game. I admittedly didn't watch a lot of him in his one year at Washington.
With that being said, I didn't cry much when we drafted Noah over him. I wasn't delighted with Noah simply because I knew he was another stiff on offense. And as a Bulls fan I've seen enough of these guys with good/great defense and no offensive game whatsoever (chandler, wallace, tyrus, noah). Again, I was barely familiar with Hawes, but everything that I had read, heard and seen lead me to believe he was a nice post player.
Watching him in summer league, I see a kid that's definitely not definsively there as yet, but his post game is nice, he has good height and I can see him improving to a borderline all-star.
So did we (chicago bulls) miss the bus again by drafting Noah over Hawes? And what are your opinions on Hawes.
Thanks.

Re: Spencer Hawes: future all star?
If he is, it'll be like his contemporary on the Kings, Brad Miller:
Once or twice, primarily as an injury selection. There are too many centers now who are already better or who project better than he does (even if he improves as a rebounder and on D).

Re: Spencer Hawes: future all star?
i'm not sure how good he looks when he's shooting 38% and committing 4 TO's per game while only averaging a combined 2.3 assists/blocks/steals
yao/a. jefferson/kaman/amare
oden/bynum/biedrins/chandler
yeah, he's not making an all-star team

Re: Spencer Hawes: future all star?
Well from the SL game I watched (Kings-Blazers) he really didn't look all that spectacular. I took note of that.
I think it's a bit early/difficult to say that he may be an all-star at this point, mainly because there are a handful of emerging young centers in the West, and because I'm not sure if he is even talented enough to make it.
But I won't give a definitive answer at this point.

Re: Spencer Hawes: future all star?
Well I think the most important point you made was the one made right off the bat. A sophmore 7-footer with post moves should be dominating the defense-less scrubs in SL.
In terms of how good he can be v. Jo Noah. I think you guys made the right choice, Hawes deosn't look like he'll dominate on offense in the NBA and he doesn't look like he'll be any good on D, so he's gonna need to be paired up with a Noah type anyway.

Spencer Hawes is a good person. He has a chance to be an all-star if he works hard.

Re: Spencer Hawes: future all star?
Well it's too early to say he won't be, but considering the amount of better center prospects there are and the proven centers already in the western conference, I'd find it very hard to believe he becomes an all-star.

Re: Spencer Hawes: future all star?
People here probably haven't seen Hawes significantly to formulate an accurate opinion/evaluation about him. Hence, you will see probably inaccurate information. But yeah, it's too early to tell. He is 20 yrs old. One thing I would say, he is advance for his age in terms of offense. He has a stellar set of post moves. Arguably, he is the most polished offensive center in terms of post moves in a decade or so. He is going to be special IMO.

Re: Spencer Hawes: future all star?
Kind of a silly thread to make right now. He really just needs to add weight so that he can hold position down low. Good low post moves are useless if you're not in the low post.

Re: Spencer Hawes: future all star?
He really seems like a different player since he got that sickness in his freshman year. He was a beast, then he lost weight and hasn't come back the same to me :-/

Yeah, that sickness (I forgot what was it called), caused him to lose 20 pounds or so. You know if you lose that much weight, especially for Centers. You will not do too well. But this offseason, he has worked hard and became stronger than before. I have to wait and see Hawes new form in the upcoming season. (Well, you can see him in the SL. He has been doing actually good except the last one. Dallas game.)

if we are talking about one game stats, then here is a good one, 14 point, 8 rebs, 3 assist, 4 blocks in 22 minutes......

the OP was talking about his play in the summer league. he refers to it quite a few times, hard to miss.

I like Spencer Hawes going into last year's draft but haven't seen much of him since. If he works hard he can be one of the better Cs in the game.

Re: Spencer Hawes: future all star?
Premature to call him a future All star based on a few summer league games. He has the talent to do it, though he needs to rebound harder.
