I used to like that show quite a bit, but now its a victim of its own popularity. Too many commercials, catch phrases, and hockey talk.

Re: Rumors of us trading for a PG?
When Paul Allen first got here, I was impressed by his NBA knowledge around the league, though not specifically for the Wolves. As I listened, I realized he had "fantasy league" knowledge. For example, he has an idea when big stars are injured, who a hot pick-up might be, etc. He claims to have inside sources at the wolves, but if he does, I don't think they are more than cursory. He has no idea about contracts and finances, and the influence they have on the talent a team can put on the floor.

I'm convinced McHale called Bird about Jarret Jack from the Bird quote a few weeks back, maybe about a week after the draft?

That makes alot of sense. The Pacers have Ford as their starter and currently have Diener (who played alot last year), Tinsley (who they'd like to dump) and Jack on their roster. I can't see us taking Tinsley. Between his salary, his age and his desire to be the starter he's just not a good fit.
But Jack is a young guy, good defensively, can shoot a bit, has a contract with a team option after this season so he's cheap and probably wouldn't mind getting his minutes behine Foye. Because he's kind of a combo guard (although I think he thinks of himself as a point), he'd fit all McHale's talk of looking for a combo guard as opposed to a pure point guard. Any idea what the Pacers would want in return? Or when he would be available for trade since he just got moved a couple of weeks ago?

I'd think Jack couldn't be available until about the end of August (2 months after the trade). I'd be very happy with Jarret Jack on our team.
I think McCants makes some sense for them as they don't really have a true SG and Ford, McCants, Grainger give them a nice young 1-3. Works for us as it would open more time up if we did re-sign Gomes with Miller, Brewer, and Carney all able to play SG.

I believe as long as Jack is not traded back to the Blazers or packaged with anything else coming to us that he can be traded at any time.
Cookie S&T for Jack anyone?

I think I'd do that. It'd have to be fast though -- I believe the cba has a 48-hour period that a recently signed FA can be dealt. If Jack doesn't work out, we don't need to offer him a QO next season.

That's not how it works. When we signed Smith it had to be determined at that time that he would be traded. It wasn't. He can't be traded. I would've done that trade in a second, but it's too late.

Yeah, if Smith thinks he's signing a contract to play here and then to trade him within those 48 hours would be pretty close to unethical. I'm not even sure if it's allowed to a sign and trade w/o the players consent.

It's not. It has to be written into the contract.

Under no circumstances can a team sign and then trade another team's free agent. But there is a rule that allows teams to re-sign their own free agents for trading purposes, called the sign-and-trade rule. Under the sign-and-trade rule, the player is re-signed and immediately traded to another team. This is done by adding a clause to the contract which stipulates that the contract is invalid if the player's rights are not traded to the specific team within 48 hours.
But it wouldn't work anyway, because Smith would be BYC. Somebody else would have to be added to the deal to allow salary matching.

yep. Has to be agreed upon and in writing. That's why teams can't dupe players into thinking they are going to be S&T'd and then just keep they player.
Thriving on mediocrity since '89.
