NJ Nets agree to sign-and-trade for Keyon Dooling

Rod Thorn is about to fill his most glaring vacancy, and now all he have to do is wait for Orlando to do some clerical work. The Nets have an agreement in principle to make a sign-and-trade deal for free agent Keyon Dooling, a combo guard they have pursued for years, and he'll fit right in as a reserve for starters Vince Carter and Devin Harris.

"I'm hopeful ... that we can make a trade," was Thorn's closest statement resembling a confirmation Friday night.

An eight-year veteran, Dooling would be acquired by making use of a $3.3 million trade exception the Nets obtained in the Jason Kidd deal last February. That will now be transferred to the Magic, who will prepare a two-year contract that calls for a $3.3 million salary next year and a $3.5 million salary for 2009-10, with a partially-guaranteed third season that will pay him a pittance.

The process is expected to be completed by mid-week, after Orlando prepares the contract and the Nets give the 6-foot-3 Dooling his physical. But the process won't begin until the teams run the trade past the league Monday morning.

The trade gives the Nets a solid backcourt trio, with a feisty, long-armed third guard who can defend both spots effectively. But it also gives them 16 guaranteed contracts, so they have stepped up their efforts to move point guard Marcus Williams, who now becomes the odd man out again.

The most logical landing spot for Williams might be one of the many teams who have their own trade exceptions -- Seattle has two, in fact -- and wouldn't mind taking a chance on a work in progress with a $1.2 million price tag.

"I have no problems with going to 16 contracts," Thorn said. "We've got other things to do. Even if this does happen, we have work to do,and we have a lot of time to do it in."

Dooling, a 28-year-old Floridian who made $3.5 million last year -- he averaged 8.1 points and 1.8 assists in 72 games -- was looking like the odd man out in this free agent market until the Nets came calling. The Magic had offered him the biannual exception, which calls for a mere $4.1 million for two seasons. His agent, Rob Pelinka, rejected the offer, and Dooling himself called it an insult.

"I don't even know why they offered that bi-annual because I rejected it right away. I don't know if they were trying to devalue me or whatever the case may be, but that wasn't acceptable," Dooling told Florida Today. "It's ridiculous. That's not a suitable offer for someone who was a good player on a good team. It wasn't a market value offer and that's the bottom line."

The Nets had no such misgivings, and they had no other immediate plans anyway for the trade exception, which expires in February.

I still remember Keyon Dooling burning us during the playoffs against the Miami Heat.
I'm glad he'll be on our team at a reasonable price.

I like Dooling. I like the way the contract is structured. It's a solid move for him and the Nets.

Here is me being 100% honest...

I hate Dooling, and I am glad he is finally gone from our team. I will however leave my opinions to myself. I do wish him the best in NJ though and hope he does work out for you guys...

well, he finally got here...its better later than never...it all starts with bringing big production in small minutes...hopefully he accepts his role, though I think it may evolve one way or another during the year...high energy-spirited player, a competitor who CAN play well in key moments of a game...I like the idea of him running with this team regardless of who he's playing with...just cant believe he's a 8yr veteran already (can still remember him at Missouri)...I believe he thinks he has a lot to prove in this league...again hopefully he does it with the Nets...

First I find it funny how he wanted more money. And said atleast 7 teams were interested in him. Now he sign for only 3.8 mil a season?

Second I could write paragraphs pn why I dont care for him, but I found this on our boad that sums it up for me:

When he has the ball it seems as this is his mental checklist:
1) Can I drive to the hoop?
2) Can I take quick outside shot?
3) Can I drive NOW to the hoop?
4) How about now?
5) Should I put up an outside shot?
6) Can I point at another teammate to simulate running an offense to give me room to drive?
7) Are any of my teammates open? If yes, can I drive before I pass?
8) Pass the ball.

^^^^ Don't really care. I think he's a solid player, his third year has a very small guarantee, he has a lot to prove and it's not like he's a starter. Our management loves him so I'll back him 100% until he crosses us. Until then, great signing.

Now, we just gotta wait and see what other deals we can work out in the next month or two.

No, OM is exactly right, and I think everyone knows how I feel about this deal.

He's simply not what we need, and I think Frank and mgmt were stuck in the past and their dogged ways, with the pursuit of him. But he's an undersized combo who can't give you enough of either position to be a positive factor, can't shoot the 3 or find his teamates effectively, and has received a far overblown reputation as a defender due the options available to the teams on which he's played (YOU'D be considered the team's best bench defender too, comparitively, if Jason Williams, JJ Redick, Jameer Nelson the new-millenium Gary Payton were the coach's other choices).

Frank will use him, so I can take solace in that fact at least.
Some people really have a way with words. Other people... not... have... way.

lol..

I actually think this was a pretty good signing. We haven't had a scroing guard off the bench in a long time. We could use the offense. I haven't seen him play that much, but from what i've heard he's a good defender which would automatically be an upgrade over marcus.

while I think this is an upgrade, I'm not sold on Dooling. Hope he proves his worth on the court and best of luck to him succeeding as a Net.

Thanks for taking him off our hands. Dooling is somewhat talented, but he happens to be a complete and utter moron. He will do the absolute stupidest things when the game is on the line. Just try not to throw things at your TV. Especially when he gives his patented "What? I didn't do anything" face.

This always happens. You always get these guys who hate players without cause. The Lakers said the same thing about Mo Evans when we traded for him, and I was like oh this sounds like a terrible trade. Then the guy comes in and plays real well for us. Not a great player but definitely not as bad as the haters would lead you to believe.

I loved Dooling. He is not a super star but he will give you a hell of a lot of energy. He is a good ball handler. Has a nice mid range jumper. He actually shot the three ball real well for us last year, but that has not been his strong suit in the past. Plays real good defense. Can drive to the hoop with a vengeance. Gets out on the break. He is extremely quick. He is a combo guard though. He is not a true point guard, so he isn't going to run an offense to perfection and he is a little small to be a shooting guard. So he is a tweener, but he is perfect as a back up point guard or a guy you want to bring in and defend a big PG or a smaller SG. He is a utility player that plays with a lot of energy. I will miss the guy, but he is a luxury tax casualty for us.

I have my reasons for not liking the guy:

1. He is not a PG
2. He should never have the ball in his hands at the end of a game
3. He should never even be in the game with 2 mins left
4. I hate when he chucks a shot when he has teammates wide open and he is being double teamed
5. I hate when he makes dumb mistakes like throwing the ball of his foot about 4 times this year
6. I hate when he dribbles the ball until 2 seconds on the shot clock than either shoots (horrible)
or attempts a pass to Dwight, than Dwight gets called for a 24 shot clock, and Dooling thinks its Dwights fault.
7. He is not a PG!

In my first post I said I wish him the best of luck in NJ and hope he does well.... I was just stating my thoughts to the other poster saying guys come in here and just say they hate a guy without reasoning. Those are my reasonings. He is a combo guard who thinks he a PG. He doesnt look for his teammates. And the big difference between number 4 is Dooling is not a ALL STAR. Its different when Kobe,James,Duncan,KG and so forth take the shot because thats what they get paid for..
