The temporary solution to LG
Larry Allen
http://goldrushfootball.wordpress.com/2 ... etirement/
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tI_A4BYyT-0
pros
11 time pro bowler(last in 2006)
consistently healthy
plays LG, our absolute weakest link in the OL
49ers might shy away(ala the Packers-with their youth movements-we could entice with a starting role)
could be cheap(another 1 year, sub 1 mil deal)
cons
turning 37 during the season
old-could be brittle

Is it me or does that little blurb say Allen's been a 49er his whole career.(which is wrong)...

I thought we were considering bringing Ruben Brown back, too. If either he or Allen has a year left in them, I'm game.

Re: The temporary solution to LG
I'd easily take Allen over Ruben. Both guys were (kinda) icons for their teams. Ruben for BUF and Allen, is of course, an icon for the Cowboys.
The reason I'd take Allen over Ruben is 'cause Allen seems to be in top physical condition, where Ruben's body seems to be breaking down over the years. Allen probably lost interest on a team going nowhere so maybe a starting role and a potentially important role on the line, with a team promising to be dedicated to running the ball, would be enough of a persuasion.
Larry Allen is considered the strongest NFL player to ever play the game... and he's not one of those guys that are gym rats that don't translate into good football players, the guys is a stud.
I'd take the chance on him, another 1 year deal, since we seem to be going that route with several players on the offense.

If this guy comes back and isn't interested in playing for SF, the Bears would be crazy not to go after him.

Isn't Josh Beekman our solution to LG?

And that's reason #1 Brett Favre would pick the Vikings over the Bears if he's released!

Re: The temporary solution to LG
Beekman's a stud.
Why would I make such a crazy statement?
Well other than that I'm a totally biased kool-aid drinking Bears fan, I can only go by the actions of JA. We sucked at that position last year. He doesn't seem to be trying to do anything at the Guard spot. There were unrestricted free agents at that sport that were starters and decently rated for other teams last year. We have the money to bring in one of those guys to start. JA didn't do it.
I trust in JA's judgment. Therefore...
Beekman's a stud.

I like this idea - the line does need help.

Wow. Who can argue with reasoning like that ?
I was constantly wondering during the draft (as were many of us) why we kept passing on some of the great OG choices available after the first 3 rounds or so passed by. So that must be it. Beekman = stud. He must have had a HELL of an off-season since Lovie did a great job in hiding him from the public during this rookie campaign.

Yeah. Did Beekman play at all last year? I really was surprised that Lovie chose to hide his secret 3rd round weapon all year. I can't wait to see him this year. They must have been treating him like a quarterback - letting him learn the ropes while watching & waiting....& waiting...

Beekman isn't even slated to start.. Metcalf is.
Our OL is going to get molested again next season.

Re: The temporary solution to LG
How can you say that? With an obvious stud like Beekman (see previous post for rationale) not even being able to crack the starting lineup? What depth we must have - obviously JA feels the OL will be a source of strength this season.

Ugh. I blocked Metcalf out of my head. He's a friggin' turnstyle. I recall on off-season article (no, I'm not looking it up) saying playing hurt was responsible for his poor season but it's not like he exactly shined prior to last year, either.

Well, he was actually a 4th rd pick and his game log shows he did get in a single game in October against Green Bay but I'll be darned if I remember him getting in there. We did win that game 27-20 so, if nothing else, he's a good-luck charm.

Re: The temporary solution to LG
I think Beekman of more of a RG, and if I remember correctly Lovie referred to him on the right side of the line.
I think its
Williams
Garza
Olin
Beekman
Tait
I don't think Beekman has much experience on th eleft side. I think most of his experience is at RG and sparingly at C. Garza can play pretty much any position on the line, but he'd definitely stay on the right side if we got someone like Larry Allen for LG.

I actually like our O Line now. Again I am wearing my July Bears tainted sunglasses and sipping on the kool-aid....but I'm happy with that.
