Rster and prediction

Post#1 » by tbhawksfan » Sat Jul 19, 2008 11:08 am

Looks like:

Horford / Brown

Smoove / Zaza / Jones

Marvin / Richardson

JJ / Chil

Bibby / Law / Speedy.

Looks like Luke Jackson might stick as well. Do we need another BIG?

Can this team reach a top four spot in the East?

42 wins seems about right. That will not get us into the topr four. The team could gel though, and Woodson learn how to coach they could win close to 50 and get that home court advantage.

That team wouldn't be a top 4 seed but the Hawks chances of making the playoffs will increase alot if they can bring in Kwame in addition to bringing back both Joshes. The Hawks really need defense at the 1 and the 5 spots...getting Kwame would be a nice start.

I would like to have West come back as well.

Uncertain on how that roster does because of my questions.

I mean:
Does the playoff experience improve regular season performances from some players?
Does Speedy stay healthy? Does Woodson learn from past mistakes and limit his minutes?
Does Marvin come back with better shooting range?
Does Smith play with a chip on his shoulder for not getting maxed? Does he exhibit better shot selection?
Does Brown actually get signed?
Does Al take a step forward offensively this year?
Does Acie become a productive member of the team?
Does Bibby excel in a contract season?

If enough of these are yes then I could see the team inching toward 50. Then I remember that Mike Woodson is the coach and realize that we probably need those questions to be yes answers just to get to .500. Bibby trying to get a new contract, put me down for 45 wins. If we don't sign Brown (or another defensive backup C) then I'm dropping to 41 wins though because we have too much of a defensive drop off when Josh Smith isn't on the floor.

As for your roster, I think Mario West sticks rather than Luke Jackson because of defense. I could see Jackson sticking as another shooter only if Childress was dealt to provide help elsewhere or if he beat out Richardson.

Bibby/Law/Claxton
JJ/Childress/West
Marvin/Richardson
Smith/
Horford/Brown (if signed)/Zaza

I'm not willing to concede a roster spot to Solomon at this time. His contract isn't guaranteed and he'll have to earn that spot in training camp. The decision to pass of summer league for someone with so little court time is probably going to raise some doubts about his drive. With or without Jones, I think we could use another big. I'm just not sure the money will be spent because without injuries his minutes will be limited. I think a thick PF for situation substitutions would be nice to have.

I think it could be a better roster with some tweaking of skill sets, but it won't happen (IMO). The mission this summer was protect the status quo not take risks. Signing 1 big without other changes is as daring as we can hope for.
