Jose Calderon vs Jason Kidd

Post#1 » by Relentless88 » Fri Jul 18, 2008 3:11 pm

Who would you take for the upcoming season? Kidd seems like the obvious choice, but he's a year older and Calderon's goign to be the full time starter. Who you got for this season?

Kidd is a legend. Dude could still probably average 12, 8 & 10. I love Jose but he has to prove himself over an entire season.

It depends what I need and what I already have on the wing and in the post. If I need my PG to distribute, defend and rebound, then without question it would be Kidd. Also, Kidd's experience would be invaluable for a playoff or championship run.

If I needed my PG to be a great distributor, but as importantly, spread the floor and hit the outside J, then it would be Calderon.

I think you get more bang for the buck with Kidd.

Easily Kidd for the Heat. We have no PG and no C. If we need a playmaker to push the break and get boards, then Kidd fits the bill.

Thats a tough one. Kidd could be HOF material but he's old and he can't shoot that well. His defense and rebounding combined with his experience and passing ability make him the obvious choice but.... he's old. You never know when somethings going to fail permanently in his old body.

Calderon may very well have a better year than Kidd but that depends on Kidd failing.

I take Calderon for the long run, Kidd if the world ends after this year.

I'd take Calderon. Shooting is that important. Kidd might be the better defender, but he's not what he once was, and his influence on team rebounding is modest despite his stats.

I'd still take Kidd, he wasn't the problem in NJ but was unfairly pinned as being it by the media, and in Dallas... Well your guess for why Avery Johnson acted the way he did is as good as mine.

Calderon puts up nice stats but he just doesn't have the mental toughness to push his team that far in the playoffs.

He defense also makes Marcus Williams' defense look DPOY caliber.

Kidd. He brings more to the table even if he scores 0 points in the whole season.

I'll take Calderon. Kidd's still living off his reputation, and I believe he was quite bad last year. His shooting is a liability.

Granted, Kidd used to be a perennial all-defensive candidate, and Calderon is not a good defender, but Kidd has slipped several notches. Moreover, I think offensive ability is much more important than defense for a point guard (and only for a point guard).

Kidd certainly is still a better playmaker than Calderon, but Calderon is much better about protecting the ball. They're comparable scorers, except Kidd is horrendously inefficient whereas Calderon is one of the most efficient players in the game. I think that more than makes up for Kidd's advantage in rebounding, which I weigh less for point guards than for bigs (because even great rebounding point guards can't really impose their rebounding on the game).

I'd take Kidd's rotting corpse, pay it $20 million a year, and have it sit on the bench and I'd still win more because of his leadership and intangibles. And when we put him in the game, the other four players work much harder, so he's still making his teammates better.
