Clips Wanted More Than Just Z.Randolph

Post#1 » by Trademarkk » Fri Jul 18, 2008 10:49 pm

According to Ian Thomsen of SI...

I have learned that the Clippers' offer to the Knicks for Zach Randolph last week was much more audacious than first suspected. In addition to Randolph, they wanted the Knicks to send them a first-round pick and $3 million in exchange for Brevin Knight. The Knicks said no.

That makes a lot more sense than what was previously reported. I really think Walsh would have made the deal if it was just a 2nd rounder.

That's more like it. I'm still glad it didn't go down, but it's nice to know that Dunleavy is going all out for the Clippers. I like his creativity.

I think this is damage control by the Knicks. It was reported that the Clippers wanted Randolph for a 2nd rounder, Knicks turn it down, Clippers come at Denver with pretty much the same exact trade days later and they accept. Now a week later, it's supposedly for more than a 2nd? That's convenient now that the Knicks are under fire for not finding a way to trim salaries. I think the Clippers would've done Randolph straight up just for a 2nd rounder...I'm glad they didn't though.

That's a gross exaggeration. This is what the Clippers felt was the value of picking up the entirety of Randolph's contract from the knicks. It involved saving the Knicks almost 50 million dollars +luxury tax. The deal would have basically looked like this

Clippers trade:
Brevin Knight
Future second rounder

Knicks trade:
Zach Randolph
future first
cash

The Knicks clearly could not would not accept that kind of deal because eliminating Randolph's entire contract is not that important to them. Who knows what the deal could have looked like had Denver not be so desperate to save money as to agree to a possible 2010 second rounder swap in exchange for Camby.

By the way, b4 you haters start thumping your chests you should consider this:

The Knicks current first rounder is partially owned by Utah. In very unlikely event that the Knicks first rounder is #23-#30 the pick would go to Utah. Now in conjunction with the likelyhood of the Knicks being a lottery team next season and the rule that prohibits teams from trading first rounders in consecutive years the Clippers would not have received the first rounder from NY until 2012.

How is asking for a 2012 first rounder lowballing?

Now, I know you guys are happy with the "steal" in the Camby trade. But would a Boris Diaw for 2 future seconds have intrigued you? He is much better offensively and would fit in better at the four than Camby because he's used to playing and has the quicks to gaurd power forwards in the NBA. Camby clashes with Kaman, while Diaw would only complement him with his terrific midrange game, amazing passing ability, and his knack for rebounding isnt bad. Now, he wouldn't be the same shot blocker, but when you have Kaman, i doubt you need another one. Would he have been a better deal for say 2 future second rounders (NOT SWAPS, GAURENTEED GIVE AWAYS OF THEM) or a future first (heavily protected lets say till 2012).

^ I personally really wanted Diaw. Between him and Camby, I'd say it's a draw when it comes to who is the better fit. Camby's contract helps his case. Diaw is younger and IMO very under-rated. I wouldn't say Camby clashes with Kaman. Diaw is obviously more of a compliment to Kaman, but Camby's length will cause a lot of trouble for opposing teams. I guess to answer your question, Diaw for a pair of 2nd rounder would have made me extremely happy. But I love the flexibility Camby's contract gives the Clippers. Clippers were in a good position even after being burned by Elton Brand. The ball was in their court and if Diaw was a possibility, I trust Dunleavy enough to make the right choice between him and Camby.
