Matt Barnes - Ideal Posey replacement
Matt Barnes is the guy who we should be going after now that Posey is gone. I woudl give this guy a 2 yr deal at 6 to 8 mil. This guy averaged 6.7 ppg and 4.4 rpg last season in 20 minutes which is similar to what Posey averaged this past season. This kid was a FA last yr too after averaging 9.8 ppg in 25 minutes and he only got a $3 mil one yr offer by the Warriors. If we didn't sign Posey last offseason then this kid would have been my #1 option. He is only 28 yrs old and is 6-7 235. He didn't shoot well from 3 this yr at 29% but the yr before he attempted 4 a game and shot 36% from 3 and is a career 44% shooter from the field. This kid is also very tough as he usually played out of position at the 4 in Nellie's uptempo system in Oakland. This kid handles the ball very well and can play some point forward. While I don't know how well he can play defense, he seems like he has the physical attributes to play good defense if put into a great situation like Boston.

Re: Matt Barnes - Ideal Posey replacement
I agree 100%
Matt Barnes is not only the closest thing to Posey available - he is in my opinion the closest thing to Posey in the whole league period. He has a very similar game and also a very similar personality. He's got that crazy/mean thing going on the court and he is well liked/respected by his teammates off it.
Do it.

What makes you guys think that we need a Posey replacement in the first place? There's more than 1 way to skin a cat. I'd rather just sign TA and give him more time and an opportunity to shine. Just because we lost James Posey, doesn't mean we need a James Posey clone to fill in for him.

Tony can go down in the middle of the season and we're screwed.

Re: Matt Barnes - Ideal Posey replacement
Tony is also just also to never play well again for more then a month here and there.
I think Barnes would be good only because of his build. We need someone to match up with LeBron's strength for at least 15 minutes if we are going to face LeBron in the playoffs again. Then again I don't know how good Barnes defense is either. Maybe his footspeed is such where his strength doesn't matter because he will just get blown by.
There are still fishes in the sea and I am really anxious to find out wich one(s) we catch.

I think I'd prefer a motivated Bonzi Wells over Barnes, but Barnes on the Cs is not something that I would object to.
I despise fans that cheer on a team from up north or one that resembles a dinosaur. oh wait...

Look at Barnes monthly season splits, look at his splits as a starter and as a reserve. He has as big of a problem with consistency as TA. TA has the excuse of coming off from a major injury.

Re: Matt Barnes - Ideal Posey replacement
Barnes lacks Posey's athleticism/quicknessto at least some extent, but otherwise is very comparable. He has a slightly bigger body, but I don't think he's any tougher than Posey.
Linton Johnson - who I think is a closer fit to Posey - has Posey's athleticism but not his jump shot - and brings as much energy as either guy. But his jump shot continues to improve similar to how Matt Barnes' jumpshot had been improving before the '06-07 season. He was a 30-37 from the line in -06-07, last time he received semi-relevant minutes, indicating solid potential as a shooter, and he's known to have a high b-ball IQ.

Nothing about Barnes is ideal for us. He's a fringe NBA player who had one decent season based mainly on the Nelly Ball offense the Warriors run.

Devean George is probably the most likely to come here ...... because we can offer a ring but low money.

i also agree with replacing posey with barnes. very similar game and i was very impressed with barnes' play against the mavs 2 playoffs ago, very much like how posey played for us.
george is the 2nd behind him.

Re: Matt Barnes - Ideal Posey replacement
I like Barnes too. Scrappy guy, one of the few guys in GS who actually played D. I think he's a decent shooter, but forced stuff last year. With our team he would get better looks. He has a more complete offensive game than Posey for sure, and is a much better open floor player. He is more athletic than Posey at this point, but doesn't have the defensive awareness. But most importantly, like Posey last year, I think he could be had for cheap. He's definitely a buy low kind of player.
I'd be all for giving Barnes a shot.
OTOH, I have no use for Devean George.

That is the guy that would at least seem to be the closest thing to Posey out there. Matt Barnes doesn't play defense and is very inconsistent from the 3 pt line. George seems to have lost his spot in the rotation in Dallas last year but he has the ability to replace Posey's production and toughness on the wing. Clearly more of a 2/3 than 3/4 but that may be a better fit anyway with Powe and Baby. He also has spent the majority of his career in championship contention, while I don't think he the same caliber of leader that Posey was he also isn't a guy who is going to be confused about what comes first.
My only question would be what his defense like at this point.

Re: Matt Barnes - Ideal Posey replacement
grantlongforpresident, I'm sure you've seen many a Golden State (or Sacramento) game to justify those comments. Fact is, Barnes is a hustle player with an edge. He can hit the 3 on occasion and he'll also give a good hard foul now and again. His main attribute, however, is his hustle and edge. We lost a lot of toughness with Posey's departure and we need to regain that edge. Barnes has it.
It's all about cost/benefit. You know that Danny would love Barnes at the minimum or a little higher. You know Danny is selling Barnes about coming here for a year, raising his profile, and getting a bigger contract on the other end. Barnes just might jump at it and he could fill in nicely next year, being a cross between Scalabrine and James Posey, while also keeping the backup SF job warm for Bill Walker.
Barnes is coming off a down year, where he was jerked around by Nellie and suffered the loss of his mother. The year before, Barnes had his career year, averaging about 10 points a game, 36 % percent from downtown, almost 5 boards a game, and 1 steal a game, all in 24 minutes. Surrounded by the Big 3, he could easily have another season like that for us.
Bottom line, Barnes, at the right price, is a huge no-brainer for us.

I've seen Barnes play well over a dozen times, and i think he is completely overrated (if that is even possible). he is just an all around bad player IMO. i really hope we don't sign him but i don't want to rain on everyone's parade, so i'll just drop out of the matt barnes discussion.

2. Perhaps, if Tony Allen isn't resigned and Giddens isn't ready to contribute as a rookie.
3. No.
4. No.
5. I like him but others won't for his lack of defense.
