Smith Irked By Lack Of Offer, Not Woodson

Post#1 » by HMFFL » Sun Jul 20, 2008 4:47 pm

Josh Smith's increasing reluctance to return to the Atlanta Hawks has little to do with Mike Woodson, despite repeated media suggestions that Smith is eager to play for a new coach.

Smith and Woodson have a fine working relationship, one confidante insists. Smith's frustration with the Hawks is the slow-moving state of negotiations, with Smith apparently still waiting for a serious contract proposal nearly three weeks into free agency.

Why did the national sites not pick this up until now? I think it was pretty clear that the Smith/Woody stuff was BS from the start.

the lack of offers is really due to that very very very few teams are under the cap. Smith and his agent should realize that.

They are annoyed that ASG hasn't made an offer even though they insist they want to keep him.

The hawks and other teams with young players must have forgotten the Bulls last year. Young players need to be nurtured and success can be fleeting. Josh Smith brings a skill set that is unique and if we are not going to keep the young talent why draft them. Remember we got Joe Johnson the same way. Be careful Atlanta.

I still maintain that ASG are doing the right thing here. They told the two guys to go out and get offers from other teams, and then they would decide if they want to match them.

Childress' agent might be able to come up with 17,000 S&T offers, but unless those are in the Hawks' favor, they don't have to agree to them.

Like I said we got Joe Johnson the same way. If they get an outlandish offer then we will be over a budget so come up with something that can work. Smith is just scratching his potential. In addition you are causing b-ball players to act like baseball in a contract year by running up stats and foget the team so that I can cash in.

This isn't about Childress, its about Smith.

Beyond that, the ASG has no incentive to drag their feet. This isn't the same situation as the other teams with RFAs. Those teams offered big deals last summer, Ben Gordon turned down a deal bigger than what Smith was offered and Al Jefferson was signed to a deal $20m higher than what Smith was offered. Apparently those teams are farther along in their negotiations than we are with Smith.

I guess the ASG are trying to play this reallys slowly so that by late August, Smith's people will be desperate. The problems is that they can probably sign him for a deal close to what Bogut/Jefferson got which would be reasonable for both sides. If they end up succeeding with the lowball strategy they will further damage their reputation AND run the risk of having a disgruntled Smith playing just because he is paid to... even a competitive guy like that could dog it if he felt he weren't being treated right.
