Carignan is the closer, right? That guy was throwing gas up to 96mph and pretty much blew away the heart of the order in the 9th.

Horton must have been using a skillet for a glove. He botched some pretty routine plays, one of which was incorrectly ruled a hit. I recall hearing Doolittle's name (DH?), but can't remember the first thing about him.

Yes Carignan is the closer, but Giants fan or not thanks for the reports, and who was the Giants pitcher you went to see,I might have a scouting report on him?

Carter is so hit or miss its not funny. I talked to someone else at the game earlier in the week, and he said he looked so terrible at bat, and just looked so foolish.Kane county's team is absolutely stacked.

Tim Alderson was one of their first rounders last year out of high school. His first full year of pro ball and he's already in A+, which is kind of impressive in itself. His pitching line looked good that game, but he gave up some loud outs.

Yeah, I looked at his numbers after the game and couldn't believe he's hitting below the Mendoza Line. He just looks so much more physically imposing out there than anyone else. He's got a huge frame to add some muscle. Just his presence reminded me of a Frank Thomas (not that he'll be as good, but just the look). He made some nice defensive plays as well at first.

I did find a scouting report on Tim and posted it on the Giants board for you, under the (Alderson Doing Well In High Single-A San Jose) thread.

A's pitchers Gonzalez, Cahill, Simmons dominate the field

No. 1 GIO GONZALEZ, LHP
ATHLETICS
Team: Triple-A Sacramento (Pacific Coast)
Age: 22
Why he's here: 2-0, 0.60, 15 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 HR, 3 BB, 20 SO
The Scoop: When Gonzalez first faced Fresno on June 18, he pitched his best game of the season: eight shutout innings, one hit, 12 strikeouts, no walks. That is, it was his best game of the season until he traveled to Fresno on the Fourth of July. In his second showdown with the Grizzlies, Gonzalez went the full nine innings, struck out 13 batters, walked two and allowed only one run on one hit, a solo homer by left fielder Eugenio Velez. Velez is now in the big leagues. Can it be a coincidence?

Oh yeah, Gonzalez also pitched well in his second start of the week, limiting Colorado Springs to one run on one hit in six innings. That's a grand total of five baserunners in two starts—or exactly one-fourth his strikeout total in that span. And with 110 strikeouts on the year, Gonzalez has taken the PCL lead.

The centerpiece of last offseason's Nick Swisher trade, Gonzalez may be turning a corner in his development at Triple-A. His walks per nine innings rate still is a bit too high, at 4.3, and he pitches much better at home (2.41 ERA vs. 6.79), but over his last five starts, he's gone 4-1, 2.27 with 44 strikeouts, 11 walks and three home runs allowed in 31 2/3 innings. And that's including a six runs in 2 2/3 inning disaster on June 23.

No. 3 TREVOR CAHILL, RHP
ATHLETICS
Team: Double-A Midland (Texas)
Age: 20
Why he's here: 1-0, 0.00, 8 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 10 SO
The Scoop: Double-A has not yet been the great equalizer for Cahill, who keeps humming along after three solid starts for Midland. He's given up just four runs on eight hits, while striking out 18 and walking eight, in 19 innings. And with a 3.75 groundout-to-fly out mark, he continues to pound the bottom of the zone with his low-90s sinker. Cahill, The minor league strikeout (121) and average (.165) leader, starts today for the RockHounds, leaving his availability for Sunday's Futures Game up in the air.

No. 4 JAMES SIMMONS, RHP
ATHLETICS

Team: Double-A Midland (Texas)
Age: 21
Why he's here: 1-0, 0.00, 8 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 11 SO
The Scoop: It's the Week of the A's pitcher, with three Oakland farmhands ranking in the top four. Simmons, a first-round pick out of UC Riverside in 2007, has such advanced command that he hasn't spent a day below Double-A—not even a tune-up in the short-season Northwest League after signing last year. He retired the first 10 batters he faced this week, and struck out 11 total, but had to "settle" for an eight-inning two-hitter. With 16-year-old Dominican righty Michel Inoa in tow, Gio Gonzalez improving at Triple-A and lefty Brett Anderson carving up Double-A batters along with Simmons and Trevor Cahill, Oakland's pitching depth is officially the envy of baseball.

RASHAUN DIXON, CF
ATHLETICS

Team: Rookie-level AZL Athletics (Arizona)
Age: 17
Why: .429/.478/1.000 (9-for-21), 3 3B, 2 HR, 8 RBIs, 7 R, 2 BB, 4 SO, 1-for-1 SB
The Scoop: Oakland's 10th-round pick in this year's draft, Dixon has been most impressive due to his quick adjustment to professional baseball. The past week served as Dixon's coming-out party, as he raised his average over 100 points. A three-star football recruit, who had committed to Mississippi State as a wide receiver, Dixon has plenty of size (6-foot-2, 215 pounds), but also the athleticism to remain in center field. Having a two-home run game, as Dixon did on Sunday would usually be the highlight of a player's week, but Dixon's 3-for-5 night on Wednesday with a triple and three RBIs and a stolen base may have highlighted his skill set even more.

2007 college draftees who had big weeks in low Class A in this edition of Men Among Boys. Low Class A Kane County CF Corey Brown (Athletics) put up a .370/.433/.815 (10-for-27) week. Brown's plus bat speed has helped him climb up near the top of the Midwest League's home run leader board, where he currently ranks fourth with 12 homers on the season. Brown, 22, turned in three straight multi-hit games this week, the most impressive of which was when he went 3-for-5 with three doubles against Quad Cities on Tuesday. He's also collected at least one RBI in four straight games .

No. 9 CLIFF PENNINGTON, SS
ATHLETICS
Team: Triple-A Sacramento (Pacific Coast)
Age: 24
Why he's here: .444/.516/.704 (12-for-27), 3 2B, 2 3B, 6 R, 3 RBIs, 4 BB, 3 SO, 1-for-1 SB
The Scoop: As fate would have it, Pennington's error in Gio Gonzalez' Friday game put the River Cats in the hole, and saddled the lefty with the loss. With a bat in his hand, though, the switch-hitting Pennington was practically flawless this week, reaching base more than half the time and clubbing five extra-base hits in seven games. And with just nine strikeouts in 77 Triple-A at-bats and a 9-for-10 mark stealing bases, Pennington has been a force at the top of Sacramento's batting order.

No. 20 SEAN DOOLITTLE, 1B
ATHLETICS
Team: high Class A Stockton (California)
Age: 22
Why He's Here: .332/.420/.625, 69-for-208, 43 R, 15 2B, 2 3B, 14 HR, 45 RBI, 34-59 BB-K, 4-for-7 SB
The Scoop: Heading into the 2007 draft there were a lot of questions about Doolittle's ability to hit for power and whether he'd be worthy of a first or second round pick as a defensive first baseman with John Olerud comparisons. After a subpar debut season where he hit .243/.341/.347 in 239 at-bats between short season Vancouver and low Class A Kane County, Doolittle has taken full advantage of the Cal League's generous conditions. He's been slugging over .600 since April 19 and is among league leaders in hitting (fourth), home runs (second), RBIs (tied for first), on base percentage (fifth), slugging percentage (first) and runs scored (fourth). Certainly striking out in a quarter of his at-bats is a concern, but he's also been patient at the plate drawing plenty of walks and has made a handful of starts in the outfield, increasing his versatility.

No. 5 CHRIS CARTER, 3B/1B
ATHLETICS

Team: high Class A Stockton (California)
Age: 21
Why He's Here: .375/.423/.917 (9-for-24), 7 R, 4 2B, 3 HR, 10 RBIs, 2 BB, 3 SO
The Scoop: Carter was drafted in the 15th round in 2005 by the White Sox as a third baseman. He didn't last long at the position as he was moved to first base before he made it out of the Appalachian League. After being traded twice in the offseason, Carter is being given opportunities at other positions, including his original domain and in the outfield. He's been playing third base regularly since June 27 and is batting .317/.338/.714 in 63 at-bats at the hot corner. Compare that to .233/.352/.578 in 90 at-bats as a first baseman. Overall, he's hitting .264/.371/.582 in 337 at-bats.

No. 7 VIN MAZZARO, RHP
ATHLETICS

Team: Double-A Midland (Texas)
Age: 21
Why He's Here: 1-0, 0.00, 8 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 10 SO
The Scoop: Though he was the third high school pitcher the A's took in the first three rounds of the 2005 draft (after Craig Italiano and Jared Lansford), Mazzaro has outperformed his fellow draftees. The righthander had a lights-out start for Midland this week, pitching eight shutout innings and giving up just four hits, striking out 10 and walking none. Mazzaro thrives on his 90-92 mph fastball that can touch 95 and has good natural sink and late explosion through the zone. His secondary offerings aren't as dependable, as he struggles to command his changeup, and he throws a below-average power breaking ball. He's 9-3, 2.11 this year, but needs to add different velocities to his power arsenal to keep hitters off balance.

No. 10 JOSH DONALDSON, C
ATHLETICS

Team: high Class A Stockton (California)
Age: 22
Why He's Here: .435/.480/1.000 (10-for-23), 9 R, 1 2B, 4 HR, 11 RBIs, 2 BB, 8 SO
The Scoop: Give Donaldson some credit for responding to a change of scenery. He was hitting .217/.276/.349 for low Class A Peoria before coming to the A's in the Rich Harden deal. With a new organization, Donaldson has moved up to high Class A and hit the ground running, putting up a .423/.483/.923 line and four home runs in his first seven games. It's not often that a guy jumps up a level and improves his numbers, but Donaldson is finding he likes how the ball jumps off the bat in the California League.

• Craig Italiano, rhp, Athletics. Italiano came close to making the Hot Sheet while dominating the Midwest League, but his transition to the California League has been pretty messy. The 22-year-old was 0-0, 162.16 for high Class A Stockton this week after lasting just one-third of an inning and allowing six runs on six hits. So far, he's recorded 10 1/3 innings, surrendering 20 hits and 19 runs, all earned. Opponents are hitting .400 off him with 10 extra-base hits. Italiano is 0-2, 16.55 in his first four appearances for the Ports.

6. Rashun Dixon, of, Athletics
B-T: R-R Ht.: 6-2 Wt.: 210 Age: 18 Drafted: Athletics '08 (10)
No AZL player improved during the season as much as Dixon. The raw five-tool talent had committed to play football at Mississippi State, where his brother Anthony is a star running back, but he changed his mind when the Athletics gave him a $600,000 bonus, the highest in the 10th round this year.

At first, Dixon looked lost in the outfield, not surprising because he was a catcher in high school. By the end of the season, however, he was making highlight-reel catches in center field. He still struggles on taking proper routes, but he makes up for his mistakes with well above-average speed. A's manager Ruben Escalera says that Dixon could become another Torii Hunter.

Strong and muscular at 6-foot-2 and 210 pounds, Dixon can hit tape-measure shots but still chases pitches out of the strike zone too often. He showed off his strengths and weaknesses by leading the AZL in triples (10) and strikeouts (68) while ranking third in home runs (eight). The A's have worked with him to set his feet and see the ball better.
