Luol Deng: What is he worth?

Post#1 » by klvanzu » Mon Jul 21, 2008 8:18 pm

If your team had the opportunity to land Luol Deng, what would you be willing to give up? In either monetary value or trade value.

No more than Corey Maggette. He's been in the league 4 years and hasn't improved his handles or his jumpshot. He's not great at creating his own shot. 50/5 is fair.

He will take the qualifying offer then become an unrestricted free agent next year. 5 years/$75M is what he will get. There's a lot of dumb GM's willing to overpay for him.

Hasn't improved his jumpshot? Thats the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard.

I'd offer him 6/66. It seems like he wants 5/70 though.

$12 mio per year is, what, under 4 mio € net? He can get twice as much in Europe. If CHI is unwilling to pay him some serious money he needs to look elsewhere...

Not improved jumpshot? He has one of the better mid range games in the league today.

deng is mad overrated, but even saying that, 11/year should be enough to land him

i hope he doesnt take a qualifying offer, that would **** over the bulls badly

Atlanta: Marvin Williams

Dallas: Josh Howard, but would look for a kick back!

5 years / 50 million.. although he plays the SF spot, he isn't a good ball handler, nor is he a slasher and doesn't even have the 3 pt range.. he is strictly a midrange jumpshooting SF with decent rebounding skills.

No way in hell is Deng worth 15 Mil a year. That's ridiculous, but someone will probably give him something a bit lower than that. My offer would be 5yrs/50 Mil, with my max being 55 Mil which gives him 11 mil a year.

I think a lot of people are pretty much spot on. Anywhere from $10M - $11.5M to the max of $12M.

If he were to agree on a 6-year deal for $66M, I'd do it.

I also agree that while $15M is overpaying him (quite a bit, actually) there's the possibility of him getting such a deal if one GM should feel he was worth it. Though I hope the Rashard Lewis contract has served as a reminder for the rest of the league not to overpay for SF's.

I'd give him 5 years $55 million that's how much Kevin Martin got when he signed his extension right?

They actually have the same agent, which is baffling since one can argue that Martin is better yet the agent is asking for Deng to get a lot more.

Not a slasher? Deng is regarded as a very good slasher, and now he finally has a PG to get him the ball. I'd say he has very good rebounding skills for a small forward as well.

When you look at offense and defense, he's better than Maggette now, and with his youth likely to improve. While his continuing injuries are an issue, it's not like Maggs is healthy either. If Maggette is worth 5/50 than Deng is worth 5/75 easy.

Of course Maggette isn't worth 5/50, maybe 5/35. I'd say Deng is worth 5/60 or so.

He's not an all-star. He hasn't shown signs of becoming a star. It is questionable whether he can even be the second-best player on a championship-level team. He's put up good-but-not-great numbers over the last couple years. He's arguably not even a top-10 SF, depending on who you list as a SF. And he isn't marketable or putting fans in the stands.

Anything over 5-years, $50 million is lunacy. Based on the other comparable players at his position, something in the 5-year, $45-50 million is correct. That's right in line with what Josh Howard, Caron Butler, and Corey Maggette got.

If I were the Bulls, I would tell him he could either take 5-years, $45 million or he could have a go at free agency in '09.

I'd say Deng is worth 12 mil a year to the Bulls in a long-term contract. If he's looking for 5 or 6 years @ 14+ mil per year, that is pushing the limits of his current value to the Bulls.
