Nets GM says he's 'hopeful' trade for Magic's Keyon Dooling will happen

New Jersey Nets General Manager Rod Thorn told the Newark Star-Ledger that the Nets and Orlando Magic have a deal in principle for a sign-and-trade for the Magic's embattled guard Keyon Dooling.

"I'm hopeful ... that we can make a trade," Nets GM Rod Thorn told the Star-Ledger.

It was the first acknowledgement of the potential movement by either side after Magic General Manager Otis Smith told he Sentinel Friday night that he was unaware of the talks after rumors first started to circulate in New Jersey.

"It's hard for me to comment on something I know nothing about," Smith told the Sentinel Friday.

All these quotes are old...these were in the news friday.
A smart coach once said, "Potential just means you're not good enough yet." Playing on potential is like living on air: It's essential, but if thats all you have, you're eventually going to starve.

Guys,

I recall players cannot be dealt just for a TPE or Cash.

What teams usually do is send a second round pick with unmeetable conditioning.

So, look for the Nets to do this. Expect a conditional 2010 2nd that is top 55 or 57 protected. Since it is unlikely can be this good, a pick will never be sent.

For example, in the Rashard Lewis deal, the Magic sent a 2009 top-55 protected 2nd to Seattle who later sent it to Phoenix.

While the conditions could actually be met, it would be a very low pick if any.

The Nets could also send the Draft Rights to Christian Drejer but I expect the protected second.

Interesting, i had no idea that the 2nd rounder we sent to the ex-Sonics was top 55 protected. So wait a minute, if thats the case then why did we not have a 2nd rounder in the latest draft?

The New Jersey Nets acquired guard Keyon Dooling from the Orlando Magic for cash considerations, pending league approval, according to sources.
Along with cash, New Jersey is sending to Orlando a $3.3 million trade exception that they acquired from Dallas in the Jason Kidd trade.
Dooling will receive a three-year deal, averaging about $3 million per year. Only the first two years are guaranteed.

It seems is a done deal. Very good news, at least we recieve something for keyon.

Our 2nd rounder went to Miami in exchange for SVG I believe.

Yea that still pisses me off thinking about Pat Riley and how he wouldn't let SVG leave b/c he was a consultant. That is a bunch of BS.

It looks like the trade is official via wiretap. But it only says cash considerations, is that the TE?

No. A team must actually trade with something. In this case, rather than a 2nd-round pick swap, the Nets traded Greenbacks, and the TE.

GM Smith confirms the trade as finalized:
"You still have to acquire assets to build a team," Smith told the Sentinel on Monday. "Anytime you can acquire an asset it will be good, particularly when you know a guy is not going to be on the team anymore. [Dooling] wanted more money and we got an asset for him.

"Whether we helped him out or not, he ended up getting a deal that worked for him."

O-Sen Link

The story itself is worth a read.

For example:
Whether that money could be earmarked to assist in trade talks to add another point guard like Memphis' Javaris Crittenton, he wouldn't say.

"It doesn't necessarily have a name on it," he said. "It can be something we do as the season unfolds, or do something with it now. But it doesn't have a name on it. We're looking at roster economy and trying to get better. If you have another asset to try to do a two-for-one, we could possibly do that, too."

He may be wearing different colors the next time he comes to Orlando, but former Magic guard Keyon Dooling said he isn't leaving town with tart tidings about how things ended here.

"There's nothing bittersweet about it," Dooling said. "I enjoyed my time in Orlando. Everything from barbershop to what the bloggers would write about me. . . . Now there's just work to do in another place."

"There's no ill will toward Otis," he said. "I'm happy with the [new] deal. Otis is happy with the product he's putting together, and I wish him the best. I made good money, good friendships and good connections in Orlando.

"Obviously I would have liked to make Orlando my home permanently, but things have to work out somewhere else now."

"I could have been patient and waited a little while longer, but I feel real comfortable," he said. "I think they [New Jersey] believed in me and it's a good opportunity."
Dwight Howard on his FT struggles:

"I just think everybody needs to stop talking about it," Howard said. "There's more to life than free throws."
