Shockey finally dealt

Post#1 » by nykgeneralmanager » Mon Jul 21, 2008 6:24 pm

http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/8364 ... -to-Saints

For a 2nd and 5th round pick, pretty good compensation for a guy coming off major leg surgery and has proven to be nothing but a headache.

Not official yet, but I'd say it is done. As a Giants fan, I've wanted him gone for a while. As much of a talent as he is, he has held the team back for a few years now and Kevin Boss has the potential to be a very very good TE, making the loss of Shockey much easier to handle. This move should've been made during the draft, and I said Reese made his first mistake as GM by NOT pulling the trigger. I guess he realized this is the best value he is going to get and finally took it.

That's great value for him. It's going to be weird watching him in another teams uniform. He was the stereotypical big market NYC type of player.

Yeah, I don't think that the Giants had that much leverage if you ask me, I feel as if the Saints gave up a little too much.

In regards to Shockey himself, I am not completely sold. Hopefully he is 100% after his injury AND -most of all- he doesn't create distractions for our team if he doesn't get the ball enough or something like that. However, in New Orleans, he will get opportunities.

I'm glad its over, he wasn't going to do the team any good by sitting on his butt for all of TC. I'll probably miss him after while, since he has been with the organization for almost a decade, his passion mostly.

Bye Shock.

Good return value for New York and a happy Shockey playing for New Orleans worries me.

So we got rid of an injury-prone hothead who was never satisfied with his role in the offense & got back 2 draft picks for Jerry Reese to use?

I'm happy.

Excellent move for us. Shockey was too much of a cancer to deal with any longer, his poor attitude was killing this team. I feel we got good compensation for him as well.

For those who think that the Saints should've used the Giants lack of leverage to lowball them, I disagree. If the Saints originally thought what they were offering was fair compensation that they were happy to give up for Shockey and the Giants decide to accept, then you have to make the deal. Trying to lowball the Giants would not have helped their cause, Jerry would have said no and the Saints wouldn't have Shockey because they got too greedy and tried to get him for nothing. It's not like he fell down a set of stairs and broke his arm, the Giants just got sick of his act. Nothing changed from the Saints perspective, Shockey's value is the same to them as it was before the draft

First off, I'm ticked this got out as quickly as it did because I knew it was going down about 3 hours before it hit the wires but I couldn't get online. I was hoping for a scoop

I like the deal for both teams. Shockey will really help the Saints, who lacked a reliable between-the-hashes receiver and had terrible TE blocking last year. Their locker room can handle him; in fact I think he might be the competitive fire that Reggie Bush and some of their linemen need.

Jerry Reese continues to impress. Getting rid of a superfluous talent that no longer fit it, and getting a useful return on it. I still wonder why he turned this exact deal down leading into this draft (with the 2nd in 08 and the 5th in 09) and now pulled the trigger, but he's earned the benefit of the doubt. Somewhere Tom Coughlin and Eli Manning are sharing a victory cigar...

It just won't be the same without Jeremy Shockey around to throw a fit after Eli Manning bounced one at his feet or sailed one over his head or didn't feed his ego by throwing him the ball 10 times a game.

Repeating as Super Bowl champions is nearly impossible, but the Giants' chances dramatically improved Monday when they dumped Shockey, an All-Pro distraction, on the Saints. New Orleans coach Sean Payton, who was Shockey's offensive coordinator his rookie year, did the Giants a huge favor by offering the same deal the Giants turned down before the draft. Shockey was more style than substance, a big talker given to saying the wrong thing. He always played hard, but was basically a headache. Shockey wanted out and if he bothered to show up at training camp in Albany on Thursday, he was fully capable of being a daily distraction to force his way out. At the June minicamp, he was the only player not cleared to practice who refused to come out of the locker room to watch from the sideline. That was just the warmup act to what Shockey had planned next.

"It hurts the team. That's my opinion," he said. "Just like you can't replace a Michael Strahan, I feel like we can't replace Shockey right now even though we have a great up and coming tight end. Jeremy is more than a tight end. He's a great offensive weapon. It does hurt the team, but it was the right move for us."

That was the prelude to Tuck getting to the real issue. "I'd much rather play with a guy who wants to be here than with a guy who doesn't want to be here. Regardless of his talent," he said. "It gives us the opportunity to turn the focus where it needs to be. The team with the least distractions has a heads up on people who do have it. We can go into camp with the ball rolling."

People have to remember that Shockey didn't just want to leave NY, he just wanted a new deal (which the Giants obviously wouldn't give him after his major injury). I assumed the trade meant the Saints were giving him a new deal, but read yesterday that they are not. So this just means Shockey will still not be pleased, but at least he is no longer our problem. The guy is a walking injury, he enters every season with an already nagging injury. However, this past season was his first major one. He gets a lot of love from Giants fans because he plays so hard and is so emotional and physical, but he also liked to run his own routes and dropped more passes than most. I don't want to just list the negatives and sound like he is garbage, but I am just glad he is no longer our problem. He is injury prone, hot headed, demands way too much attention, and not as good as he believes he is. Let him screw up somebody else's lockerroom.

I like the deal, we might have slightly overpaid, but we tend to screw up the second round pick all the time anyway, save for Darren Howard.

I like how Icness is thinking on this issue, it seems like after Deuce went down, our team lost a lot of intensity, other than Colston, no one seemed nasty on the field, and we were rather soft compared to the year before. Even Jammal Brown and Jahri Evans who were just down right beastly there first year under Payton, seemed a lot more passive.

I think Shockey will make this team more intense, and he is an elite TE when he's healthy, both catching passes, and as a blocker.

I really like that he hasn't fumbled since 04. He'll be a fan favorite here in no time if he's healthy.

For the Giants, they draft really well, and I think they got really good value for him out of us, and they clear the air of Shockey dragging the locker room down.

Good trade for both teams IMO, this is the first year since I've been alive that the Saint's have been as proactive in the off-season that I would have liked. We have targeted players, and we are going out and getting them. I like that, it's something we sorely lacked in my lifetime.

I don't feel like a homer in saying that the Saints look really great on paper this year, this is the most talented saints team I ever remember, but health is a HUGE issue.

i think that the saints got the better part of the deal on this one because they got a play maker in shocky,. also im very happy that this deal went through because since im a boys fan thats one less thing to worry about this year

Shockey's best game last season was against you guys & we lost. In the playoffs you "didn't have to worry about him" & we won.

It will be interesting to see if Shockey can 1- Stay healthy & 2- be a good teammate.
