Deng or his people claimed the offer was 5/50 take it or leave it, no negotiation. The Bulls leaked 5/57 through the team's beat writer. He is suspected to be seeking around 75.

----

What Deng has going for him:

Gives you 17 PPG and 6.3 RPG on 48% shooting. (18.8 and 7.1 at 51% FG in 2007). Put up 22 and 9 in the playoffs in 07. At his 2006-7 numbers there are only about 3 SF’s in the game that score more or rebound more.

Great off the ball player. Cuts to the basket and deadly from mid-range. Hard worker. Is still just 23 years old. Good defender when healthy.

Last year struggled with various nagging injuries that were a potential reason for his numbers dropping.

What he has going against him:

Hasn’t added any post game, a 3pt shot, significant ballhandling, or 1v1 scoring aspects to his game. Is limited by being a good but not super athlete. Tends to ‘disappear’ for long stretches in games, even on a scoring strapped team that begs for him to be more aggressive. Does not get to the line like a go-to scorer.

I think he is worth 12-13 million. If he takes the QO and plays on that next season alot of us may look stupid when we look back on some of the salaries we're talking here.

I say get him now for 12 million, he's had a down season and it probably won't get worse than that. Just remember, at age 21 he played in all 82 games and averaged 19/7/3 on 52% shooting. He is most definately worth 12 mil, I just hope thedeal gets done before he bounces back and becomes even more expensive.

Luol Deng (S&T, 5yrs/$60mil)
for
Andrea Bargnani
Jason Kapono
2009 1st

But I doubt they'd want Kapono and his bloated contract. I'd include Parker instead of Kapono, but I'd need to know for sure that we could sign a decent SG to replace him, otherwise Hassan Adams would be our only 2 guard :(

How does Deng's BYC come into play? Would that actually "work"? I'd send out Bargs, filler and two 1sts for him at 12-13mill a season.

If you want any more you need to be an elite SF

It's not often so many fans from different teams agree to this magnitude on contracts. So I think the $11M a year looks like a very realistic market-value. In the long run, I honestly don't see why Deng would turn down $11M - $11.5M a year. If he signs for 6 years, it's between $66M - $69M. Throw some incentives in, and it's around $72M.

So far it sounds like the Bulls haven't even offered him anything equal to the 5/57.5 deal they offered last year. I'm guessing they'll work out a shorter deal that goes something like 3/34.5

The supposed 5/50 offer is right on the money imo. No need to overpay him and end up with a bloated Kirilenko and Odom-style contract, that the Bulls would have a difficult time moving later if they wanted to.

I agree with 10 millions for year. Bulls should give him that.

Can't believe that Deng and Gordon get this much discussion. They are not all-star calibre players, and never will be.

Deng does everything well (except extend defenses) but nothing great. Gordon is Vinnie Johnson 2.0, which is nice, but an undersized streak shooting 2 isn't worth too much.

Sorry Bulls fans, they are both nice players, but neither of them is a tier one player. Signing them to multi-year 10 plus million contracts is gonna prevent your team from improving in the long run.

If you adjust for pace and minutes played, Deng's production is similar to Mike Dunleavy's, he contributes more in terms of rebounds and defense but Dunleavy is the better passer and more efficient scorer...

When Dunleavy got his contract it was for $45 million over 5 years, now given how young Deng is and the fact that he's put together a good season every year he's been in the league (while Dunleavy has not) like everyone has been saying all along Deng is definitely worth a contract of at least $55 million over 5 years. You could probably nudge that number up a little bit, but if Deng is looking for anything significantly greater, say something in the $70 million+ range over 5 years, he has to be smoking.

Turning down the 5/57.5 was a huge mistake. A very solid player, who disappears in the 4th Q. Will eventually become a better player with Rose in the picture. Do the 3 yr deal, 33mil and go from there!

Doesn't Childress's Greek deal set the value for Luol Deng as well???

Childress is a year and a half older, and they are both about the same size.

Childress had higher shooting percentages than Deng in 2007-08
FG% — 57 > 48
3PT% — 37 > 36
FT% — 81>77

On a per 48 minutes played basis Deng scores (24.1 to 19) more, while there is little statistical difference in their rebounding (LD 8.9, JC 7.9), assists (LD 3.5, JC 2.5), steals (JC 1.5, LD 1.3), blocked shots (JC 0.9, LD 0.7). and turnovers (JC 2.1, JC 2.7).

I don't think Childress's deal should have any affect on Lou's negotiations or value. Olympiakos offered Deng a deal worth $11.5M per year and Lou turned them down, stating that he wanted to stay in the NBA. I'm guessing Loul will get a contract at $11M per year with incentives, or a 3 year deal where he can go and grab a bigger contract at a younger age.

It's amazing how close everyone's opinion is on this board!

5/50 sounds fair, although if he really cant get anything he should settle for 3 year 30 mil and work harder next time.
