Are you guys crazy? A 3rd base coach doesn't decide whether or not a player tags up. I understand people hate the guy, but at least blame him for something HE screws up on.

Whoa, whoa, whoa. Are we talking about the same play? I don't think so. Melky on 3rd, 1 out, Gardner pops out to deep center. Melky holds.

What play are you talking about?

Yes, that play. The runner on 3rd decides whether or not they feel they can make it home on that play...it has absolutely nothing to do with the 3rd base coach.

i think ponson is living on borrowed time, he seems to get trouble in every inning and it will catch up to him, but for now i'll take it

The point is that Bobby tells the runners nothing on that type of play, it is completely up to the runner if they think they can make it. Sure before the at bat Bobby may say "don't go unless you're positive you can make it" but thats it. Once that ball is in the air, Bobby doesn't decide what the runner does. A 3rd base coach is there for when the play is behind the runner, such as when they are rounding 3rd on a base hit. When the play is there for the runner to see, the coach is not used.

I'm actually welcoming the latest comeback attempt by Pavano if it will get Ponson out of the rotation again. He's had some great luck with this highwire act but he's going to get rocked eventually. He's getting groundballs and hasn't been a home run machine but everything else about him is still a disaster.
