Moneyball in the NBA
by: Joe Duffel

There is an easier graph to read: http://scoutingthenba.com

General Managers, Accountants, and Player Personnel have had to figure out how to put a winning team on the floor without going over the alotted amount the NBA sets as a general guideline. In the upcoming 2008/9 season it should be noted that Salary Cap is designated somewhere around 58.6 million.

Broken down below is over 400 NBA Players from the 2007/8 season. The first Column is based on the results of each players performance. The 2nd and 3rd Columns are based on if a player were to become a free agent or a target of trade speculation. This would allow a team executive to draw a quicker conclusion to the herein said player(s) in focus. The middle column can be used a safe guideline for players that have only played a partial season due to injury or trade.

While most of this information should be kept internal simply to get the best deal from each player/agent. It is a quantum step forward for many owners, general managers, or even player personnel justifying the reason to either sign, trade, or stay away from that player. The 3rd column is based on the following: Performance, Age, Success/Failure ratio in Win/Losses, public Jersey demand, Average away game attendance fluctuation of player success with current team, injury factor, suspension factor and finally the success ratio of the team they are on over the last 25 years. (Many really good players can be stuck in franchises that continue to losing records decade after decade. They go to a different franchise and immediate success. Examples: Boris Diaw- (Atl/Phx) most recently Pau Gasol (Mem-LaL) and Kevin Garnett (Min/Bos). Again these numbers would be used as a basis for each player til June 2009. (Integration of a players 2008/9 season would begin after 20 games)

Every number above is done by a computer program and for obvious reasons to some, we cannot show any more data than what is shown above. This includes information as simple as readouts from 2006/7 and actual player salaries. There is also historic data used for some teams or media outlets that were not willing to share with the public.

Not listed here is the salaries of each player, but here is an example of the Boston Celtics whom invested over 50+million on Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, and Ray Allen. Now with these three superstars they built a money ball team around those three players. The key was understanding also whom you are drafting and the purpose they will serve on your team. While all teams weigh both BPA(best player available) and Positions of Need before they make their draft selection. The Moneyball theory basically utilizes this model and sculpts a team not only into a style by the players it has, but a system in which they will be used in certain situations to maximize the purpose of signing that player on the team. Teams that do not have a system, basically leave players 10, 11, and 12 on the bench for insurance and practice purposes. Under this scheme every player will play in every contested game, and not only will each player willl understand their role, but so to over time will the opponents, media, and fans. You share the obvious, and camaflouge the secrets to success

The recent signing of Desagna Diop by the Dallas Mavericks had many people scratching their heads. Many understood the player to average 2pts per game, and even if he was a defensive player that knew the Dallas system how could he be worth that much? The truth is the signing was pretty close to his estimated value in this league. *5yr 32million

Code: Select all

106   Desagana Diop(Dal)   DAL   1.717   5.625   3.977
107   Desagana Diop(NJN)   NJN   0.668   3.450   2.248

It would appear here the Diop based on all factors of the 3rd column combined would be valued at an average of 6.2 million per season (5yr x 6.2avg = 31million). There is not much output on the offensive side of the numbers, but you must factor in many things that the average fan doesn't understand it takes to make a system work. Avery Johnson was always trying to define his team as defense first, and physical play on offense second. If you cannot get a Greg Oden, then you must scramble to insert players into your defensive system.

* Diop also signed for the mid-level exception which allowed Dallas not to pay the luxury tax for going over the salary cap. So if you take into mind that Dallas needed to sign a player and use its mid-level exception. Hopefully this makes the signing far more understandable. Remember, its not how smart the people are around you, but how much more competent do they make your job

- Matt Barnes was a steal for the league minimum (like the deal or not it is a deal)

Actually there are some players that put up good numbers when they are on the court and they will be without a contract.

Point Guard - Best deal going is Anthony Johnson whom like Steve Nash (not on the level) but appears to have gotten better late in his career. Anthony was traded this last feb. 08 for a 2nd round pick to the Atlanta Hawks. He was suppose to be their starting point but didnt deliver, however he did put up good stats and would be far better than anything we have had here in a long time to back Steve Nash up.

Code: Select all

Sebastian Telfair   MIN   46.4   0.927   43.1   8.97
Jason Williams   MIA   49.5   0.886   43.9   9.14
Anthony Johnson   ATL   47.1   0.960   45.2   9.42
Kyle Lowry                  MEM   46.7   0.970   45.3   9.43

His per minute output was as good as Andre Bargnani or about the same as the point guards listed above. Anthony will probably sign for the 10year veteran minimum.

Code: Select all

SF -

Kasib Powell   MIA   41.4   0.886   36.7   7.64
Matt Barnes   GSW   37.0   1.045   38.6   8.05
Kelenna Azubuike   GSW   37.9   1.045   39.6   8.24
Bostjan Nachbar   NJN   41.8   0.955   40.0   8.33
Desmond Mason   MIL   44.4   0.935   41.6   8.66
Matt Harpring   UTA   40.3   1.043   42.1   8.76
..
 Boris Diaw    PHO   56.3   1.068   60.2   12.53

Suns did great on this signing: Matt Barnes

SG -

Code: Select all

Kenyon Dooling   ORL   38.8   1.013   39.3   8.19
Marco Jaric   MIN   46.6   0.927   43.2   9.00
Kirk Snyder(Min)   MIN   47.4   0.927   44.0   9.17
Jannero Pargo   NOH   44.2   1.084   47.9   9.98
Rashad McCants   MIN   53.2   0.927   49.3   10.27
Tony Allen                   BOS   47.7   1.081   51.5   10.73
Randy Foye                   MIN   58.8   0.927   54.6   11.37
...
Raja Bell        PHO   59.3   1.068   63.3   13.20
Leandro Barbosa   PHO   71.9   1.068   76.8   16.00

We may be able to pick up Tony Allen for next to nothing if we move on it before Boston does. Also there is an incredible overload of talented SG in Minnesota. Im sure one of them will be released for peanuts. (Jaric is too expensive)

Hopefully this helps out.. Btw: I did not get hired by the NBA team in Vegas Summer League, but did meet couple other directors of player personnel that have fired on my emails.

I may be mistaken, but I thought the MLE simply allowed teams to exceed the cap to sign FAs. I didn't think it offered any luxury tax protection. I only ask because this would blow my whole "Sarver doesn't wan't to pay the lux tax and therefore won't use the MLE" arguement out of the water.

Interesting theory. I was looking at what is happening to the nba with the money structure that is in place. I think Boston got what they were paying for, but one the other hand, you have 3 players on this team who is making near that, but did not get the same results. Then you have 3 more players that are making between 5-9 million a year. Kind of price, especially the 9 mil.

so I have been thinking about the state of the NBA. I think it has to do with guarantee contracts as one part b/c it locks teams in long term to a potential bad contract due to one year of solid output.

We are seeing some player leaving to go overseas to play and get paid, we are seeing players such as matt barnes who to me, is worth more than 1.2 mil, coming for cheap due to big players salaries. Stars on teams, not necessarily the best player on the team such as R Lewis with the magic is killing their cap space. To me, players are making too much money, their contracts are so huge that it hurts the team big time to find role players that you can afford.

The risk is, taking cheap players that are role players, and fitting them in with the superstar and the coaching staff. Sometimes it works, most of the time it doesn’t. but the thing that is killing the NBA IMO is the high salary, and the overpaid players that are just avg.

I think the suns got a great player in Barnes, but the rest of the personnel to me does not look like a team ready to work hard and win a championship. Maybe with the MD mentality gone, light practices and short bench will change the atmosphere here in the desert, but that remains to be seen.

Unfotunate for us, Tony Allen and Anthony Johnson have both signed elsewhere. Tony is returning to the Celtic's, while Johnson is making a return with the Magic (he played there in 2000-01). I wouldn't really mind Sebastin Telfair or Jason Williams AT ALL at the backup point, especially Telfair, who seems to be falling out of the league, but can be solid at the vet minimum, especially on the defensive end. Ofcourse, I would prefer Jason Williams over him. As I see it, if Dragic IS coming over, and we are looking at trading Diaw and Barbosa, we would be left with this:

Nash/Dragic
Bell/DJ
Hill/Barnes/
Stoudemire/_________
Shaq/Lopez

PF and SG positions would need to be addressed, but I think Tucker will be added in ANY deal we make (because he's just another scorer and we don't need an unexperienced scorer, we need defensive guys who can do something on offense).

So we'd need to get a SG, a combo G/F and a 3rd string point with the returning skinner. Now, the deal would net us 2 or more of these. I say we could get a SG and G/F out of the trades. So resigning Skinner and getting a 3rd string pg (or backup in the case Dragic bails on us) is what we need to do right now.

Jason Williams at the PG, Devin Brown G/F, Jaun Dixon SG, Brian Skinner PF should be some of our options. If we picked up these four and let Tucker walk, (these four being at the vet minimum), we would be something along this:

Nash/Williams/DJ
Bell/Barbosa/Dixon
Hill/Barnes/Brown
Stoudemire/Diaw/Skinner
Shaq/Lopez/Skinner

14 players, salaries would be 72+4 = 76mil we'd have to pay 5mil to the league in lux tax currently we are paying 2 but if you cut Tucker you replace him with Brown that means you get a better player at the same price. Not bad at all IMO. If we're thinking of going in without any trade's, this seems the best situation, or just keep Tucker and don't sign Brown. Either way, we're likley to get 14 players instead of 13 for depth issues, but we may only start the season with 13.

Wiki:

Mid-level exception
A team is allowed to sign one player to a contract equal to the average NBA salary, even if the team is over the salary cap already, or if the signing would put them over the cap. This is known as the Mid-level exception. The Mid-Level Exception for the 2007-08 NBA season is $5.36 million. Only teams that are over the Salary Cap can use the mid-level exception to sign free agents. The MLE as it is often called is $5.585 million for the 2008-09 NBA regular season

I know its wiki: But this is not the extent of it and I believe I am correct on what I am about to say:

Dallas - Is over the cap, and has in its possession a MLE.
Dallas tells the league it wants to use its MLE on Diop which equates to 6.2 million dollars annually and 5.5 the first year by terms of the MLE.
MLE are only for teams that are over the cap, and have obtained an MLE through a trade or a situation.
^^^^ That part is correct
This part I am educated on but definitely in the gray of where it is right and wrong.
I believe the 5.5 million MLE does one of two things:
A> No Luxury tax the first year on the 5.5 million the team went over.
B> or there is a 40% first season, 75% second season and 100% every season there after.

I will promise this you can sit with 100 NBA 50 understand it but after they are speaking for 2 or 3 sentences they go in completely different directions. It boils down to tax and somehow this MLE helps the owners stay away from dollar per dollar.

However- If a team is below the cap and use the MLE which puts them over the cap I believe they do pay dollar for dollar for each dollar over the cap.

If your confused I probably did a good job.

if you use the MLE and exceed the cap you dont avoid the penalty.

Strange enough I also believe teams have until February tradedeadline to rid themselves of any problems concerning tax. So even if a team is 6 million over, they will not have to pay a penalty until the season is 2/3 finished. Then team salaries are calculated against the NBA threshold.
