Atlanta has only 8 players under contract

interesting item from Hollinger's latest article (http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/columns/s ... wks-080723):

"Atlanta has only eight players under contract at the moment, and two of them (oft-injured Speedy Claxton and oft-inactivated Solomon Jones) barely count. Even if the team can re-sign Josh Smith, the Hawks are still paper thin."

Most of the top free agents are already gone and many of the remaining ones are bolting for the euro-leagues. How is Atlanta going to put together a roster?

They'll likely re-sign Josh Smith, Jeremy Richardson, and Mario West.

They'll then likely split the MLE on two players, and add 1 more with the LLE.

This sounds like a GMs dream to me. They will get to pay min. contracts to up[ to 6 players (Assuming Josh Signs cause he will be matched if they have no players) that could really show a GMs talent. Great GMs don't draft LeBrons. They sign Raja Bells,

Or perhaps this will make them more likely to consider a 2 for 1 or 3 for 2 sorta deal, in order to flush out their roster. If they could S&T Smooth for a pair of decent players, or include BIbbys expiring contract to bring back 3-4 players that could help them. Assuming they get decent value that is.

Josh Smith sound like he just take the QO and bail next year.

Wow talking about having to stretch the MLE. The Hawks starters might be playing 40 minutes per game if they don't add some talent soon.

The hawks have had some pretty bad players on their roster for years, this doesn't really suprise me.

As far as cap space, it can't be much. Shamsports has them at $51.5 million and hoopshype has them at $51.7 million.

They've got to do whatever it takes to keep Josh Smith or they are looking at a very long season.

The Hawks last year had 7-8 solid rotation players now they lost Chilldress and didn't get anyone noticeable and also didn't have any draft picks . Now if Smith also tries to bolt or even if he stays they're going to have a problematic season. For some reason they didn't go after any decent FA and now almost all are gone.

Bibby , J.J. , Marvin , Smith , Horfords thats a solid S5 but their bench just consists of Zaza and Acie Law and a bunch of crappy players. The starters have to play insane minutes for them to have a chance.

last summer there were too many free agents too little roster spots open.

I think that's good. Speedy can retire as well, and they can bring some young blood to the playoff caliber team. They still have their main core of Bibby, Johnson, JS, hortford, zaza and law. all they need is a dec suppoting cast.

Didnt the celtics have like 3 players under contracts after the KG trade last summer lol.

The Hawks don't have any caproom- in fact Childress still counts as 10.8 million dollars against the cap as long as he stays in Europe unless the Hawks renounce his rights.

Because our owners are completely incompetent retards. It really does suck being a Hawks fan.

I'm not disappointed at the Childress situation at all, it's everything else that they do that pisses me off.

Hadn't heard that before. Thats Awesome. His EuroDeal has yearly opt outs, so there is incentive for them to hold those rights in case he come back after year 1 or year 2.

They need to trade Bibby. His contract is an albatross and despite popular opinion he sucked in the Celtics series while the rest of the team made a push for an upset. He is washed up garbage.

Josh Smith needs to be resigned stat.

Their depth was fine but they screwed up with Childress. He definitely should have been a S&T to fill out their bench.
