Odd Silence?

Post#1 » by Sports Arsenal » Thu Jul 24, 2008 4:01 am

Is it concerning anyone else the odd silence of Houston's name in any rumors of trades or signs,
the closest thing we have is, ongoing talks with Landry... which need to be cleared up now!... and
a possible minor trade... We are super weak behind Yao and Rafer and those position should be being addressed quickly before all of the decent options are gone.

ShaqSux,
What, you didn't hear the gazzillion McGrady to Detroit rumors?

Seriously, the Rockets are reasonably satisfied w/their starters and just want to improve their bench.
Reasonably enough the owner doesn't want to go into the Lux Tax until he knows Yao and Tracy will be reasonably healthy thru the season, and the team is w/in a $mil or so of the tax,so no MLE usage.
The bench-outside of Bibby-is full of undersized players w/small contracts-not exactly the best trade bait. How many teams are burning up the phone lines for Hayes or Head? And Morey has made it pretty clear he's waiting til the Feb trade deadline to move Jackson.
The team added Barry and 2 draft picks will make the team, possibly 3 if Maarty replaces Landry,so that's 3 new faces, possibly 4-on a 15 man roster.

That said, the Jackson,Scola deals happened w/no prior rumors,so who knows?

Morey already said it's a waiting game. Waiting for the right moment. Be patient, it could be until the trade deadline that we make a real trade.

Yeah, I hear ya. The IRS is pulling this same kind of goofy silent game crap on me right now. They must be plotting to get more of my cash. Maybe I should start calling in to complain about the unfair treatment and file some injunctions.
Morey 2020.

Q:How are they experts when they're always wrong?

I trust Morey is doing what he thinks best.

Tisbee,

I heard every McGrady to Chicago, Detroit, etc. rumor, however I do believe we could be making some kind of moves besides signing Barry and our picks, (which we have only signed 1 of 3). We are extremely we weak at the center spot which if Yao can stay healthy I am more than willing to wait till the trade deadline for that. But we have a weak starting PG, 2 very old pgs, and an super undersized unproven pg on our roster... If we are going to be a contender then that has to change, imo when changing the floor general (starting or backup) it should always be done in the summer not during the season, due to the fact that that position is one that needs to be in sync with the offense more than any. With Jason Williams, Arroyo, and others still available we should be pursuing their likes.
I trust Morey too, but I still think their is more shaking up that needs to be done.
Novak,Hayes,Head,Francis,Jackson.... Five players who have no business being on this roster with Hayes as a possible exception.

I really like a quiet offseason...
Not much hype surrounding us, if you know what I mean (Derek Anderson, Stromile Swift, Mike James, Steve Francis, etc..) Morey is playing chess.. SMART!

Agreed. I'd rather us stay out of the spotlight, and just take care of business on the court.

ShaqSux,
I was kidding about the McGrady rumors.
And I agree a young C,a quality back-up PG and another scoring wing would be great. But it takes 2 to tango-or trade. I doubt the Rockets trade Hayes until they are sure Dorsey can actually defend NBA players, not just say he will. Nobody knows if Francis can even play, much less how effective he will be. You're going to have to look long and hard for anybody who will trade a quality big man for Luther Head. Not to mention if the team trades Head(a good title for a porn flic-"Trading Head"),the only backup wing is Barry. Brooks is going to be given the chance at the back-up PG before they think about trading him,and his salary is so low you could only get another young player for him.
That leaves us w/Bobby Jackson-and Carl Landry. Morey has made it quite clear he is saving Jackson and the 09 First for the Feb trade season. If Yao is healthy at that point,I'm positive Morey is going after Mike Miller. If Yao isn't,he'll go for a decent big who's either unhappy,or whose team is looking to unload long-term salary.

Which brings us to Carl Landry. Other than incredible stupidity on his or his agent's part, there is no reason why Landry shouldn't have been signed by now. No rookie coming off an knee injury and not having cracked the starting rotation is gonna get a MLE deal from anybody else. They have to know the Rockets aren't going to give Scola's back-up more than Scola. That makes the upper limit $3mil and the Rocket's initial offer-if they even made one-was prob what Hayes got, starting at $1.75 as the lower limit. A deal of 3yrs@$3mil,3.3,3.6 w/a $100,000 signing bonus to get the $10mil mark and a player opt out after 2 yrs should have been fairly easy to reach. And if the team could unload Francis and Novak's salary they'd be under the Lux Tax.
So why haven't they cut a deal? Notwithstanding the power of stupidity or greed,I am increasingly of the opinion Morey DOESN"T want to sign Landry,he wants somebody to make an offer so he can turn it into a sign-n-trade. This is the reason for the surgery charade.Landry's Agent thinks Morey is using it to drive away teams. I think Morey is using it as a way to reassure teams about Landry. The Rockets are saying, yes, there is a problem w/his knee, but it is so easily fixable as soon as he gets a little surgery done we're gonna sign him. We just want the surgery done as soon as possible so his rehab is finished by the time we start camp. Notice the Rockets have NOT been saying get the surgery and after we see how it turns out we'll then sign you, they're saying we'll sign you as soon as you get it. I think Morey WANTS some team w/cap space to make an offer so he can trade Landry for a Trade Exception for use later on. Say in Feb Morey trades Jackson,Brooks and the 09 First for Mike Miller. He then uses the TE to pick up a PG off a team that wants to cut salary.

Return to Houston Rockets
