GM's that like to play GM too much

Post#1 » by Heat3 » Thu Jul 24, 2008 6:54 pm

I'm sure some of you play NBA 2k8 or NBA Live on franchise mode. Sometimes you just play through the games to get to the offseason where the GMing fun is. You get to draft, scout, trade and sign free agents. You can do some of that in the regular season but it is limited by deadlines and what not. You get to the point where your team is so good you don't have to make moves but you still do cause it's fun. The games and winning championships become almost secondary to seeing if you can build a team that can do it again.

How many real life GM's do you think are too enamored with the process of GMing and lose sight of the ultimate goal which is winning championships?

I don't think any- I think that GM's are far too afraid to make a mistake in general. There are plenty of coaches who fall into this but I don't think that GM's do at all.

Donnie Nelson <-> Dallas Mavericks
David Morway <-> Indiana Pacers
Donnie Walsh <-> New York Knicks
Mark Warkentien <-> Denver Nuggets

Those are all guys that have tried to better their team by making trades that are just blockbusters but obviously won't better the team.

Francis to NY
AI to Denver
That huge trade between Indiana and Golden State
Jason Kidd Trade

Bob Whitsitt when he was still a GM for the Trailblazers.

Larry harris when he was with the Bucks.
Roster always had new 'core' pieces. Never jelled. Liked to make video game trades where you get a talented player but never really helped the team (see CV)

We traded our unhappy 30 year old, injury prone, 20-million dollar PF for a young, extremely productive PG, a very nice center prospect, and a big expiring contract.

Looks to me like a great move for a team needing to rebuild.

So then you consider #11 for #13 + Jarrett Jack to be a blockbuster?

Besides, Bayless hasn't proven anything Von Wafer, Marco Bellinelli, and Marcus Banks haven't already proven - that he can put up big scoring numbers in a scrub-filled summer league.

Let's see him improve that 0.3-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio and actually see his teams starting winning games before we anoint him God.

"On January 17, 2007, Dunleavy was dealt to the Indiana Pacers along with teammates Troy Murphy, Ike Diogu, and Keith McLeod for Stephen Jackson, Al Harrington, Šarūnas Jasikevičius, and Josh Powell."

:roll:

And people wonder how 70% of the topics on this site just turn into bashing other teams. Wow.

^lol, yeah wait what? why did that even bring up? Is he just jealous cuz the Pacers are going to have a terrible season and they got screwed over in a trade? I'm a little confused here.

Ahhh....that deal. That was actually Donnie Walsh. Morway didn't become the Pacer's GM until this past May.

As was already said. Larry Harris. He's the poster child of this thread topic.

He would tell you himself that when he is coach the temptation is too great to try to go for a quick fix. He did much better when he was GM only (even technically it is Randy Pfund who is GM). He has in the past made some spectacular trades however.
