he defending Stanley Cup champion Detroit Red Wings have signed forward Marian Hossa to a one-year, $7.4 million contract, TSN of Canada and The Associated Press reported, citing unnamed sources.

Hossa played last season for the Atlanta Thrashers and Pittsburgh Penguins, who acquired him from the Thrashers at the trade deadline. He had 29 goals and 37 assists in the regular season and had 12 goals and 14 assists in 20 playoff games as the Penguins advanced to the Stanley Cup finals.

A first-round draft pick of the Ottawa Senators in 1997, Hossa has 299 career goals and 349 assists in 701 career games. He was dealt to the Thrashers in 2005 as part of the trade that sent Dany Heatley to Ottawa.

Hossa was reportedly contemplating offers from the Canucks, Canadiens, Oilers and Penguins, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.

The Boston Bruins also were among the contenders, but the signing of forward Michael Ryder on Tuesday took them out of the bidding because of tight cap space.

The Oilers were willing to overpay, at least $9 million per year, to lure Hossa north, according to the Edmonton Journal. The Penguins still had a standing offer -- believed to be more than $7 million per year for five years -- on the table for Hossa, but hadn't raised it since the signing period began, according to the Tribune-Review.

was totally surprised by this pickup...

if you're a fan of lets say Buf, Nash, or even Atl, why waste your money on season tix when your team clearly shows that you're not committed to bringing a winning franchise to the city? Even a team like the wings are continuing to improve their team, after wining a cup. Kudos to Ken Holland and the rest of the front office staff. Must be great to be a Detroit fan, and be part of a winning organization.

They ripped into Hossa's decision on PTI.. Although I can't hate a player for wanting to win, but at this stage in his career, he could've signed for much more, and stay with the Penguins who still made it to the final

It was a great decision for him. Everyone knows he's a star, so playing one year on the best team in the NHL and the most likely to with the Stanley Cup again is a great move. At the end of the season, if the Wings win it all, he wont just be a star, he'll be a star for the Stanley Cup champions. That will boost interest in him even more than there was this off-season.

Well to me it's similar to when Karyia and Selanne both went to Colorado. If he fits into the team then it was a great decision. There are no guarantees that he'll win (see both the guys above and Cujo) but he'll be on a competitive team who has a chance, with or without him.

If he doesn't get hurt or really suck, he'll still be in line to get the big contract extension next year
