Even Pierce is considering the move, after he's done with the NBA though...

http://sports.espn.go.com/oly/olybb/news/story?id=3504106

The 10-year NBA veteran hopes for a repeat final against the Lakers and, beyond that, may take the chance to familiarize himself with teams in Spain for his post-NBA days. He already toured the football stadium at Real Madrid, which also has a successful basketball club.

"I don't know the teams," Pierce said. "[But] I thought about playing, once I'm done with the Celtics, overseas and maybe this could be a great place."

“In the next four or five years, could I end up playing over there?” Kidd wondered. “Hey, why wouldn’t I play in Italy or somewhere (else)? That might be a great experience. “It’s a legitimate option now with Childress going over there.” Yahoo! Sports

latimes.com — Lakers reserve guard Sasha Vujacic, a restricted free agent, is prepared to leave the team and accept an offer from a European team in the next few days if the Lakers don't make him an offer he deems fair, according to a source in the Vujacic camp who spoke only on the condition of anonymity

Interesting how the Celtics lost James Posey and the Lakers lost Ronny Turiaf and might lose Sasha Vujacic too.

Lakers’ Sasha Vujacic also has been contacted by several European clubs, according to a Slovenian newspaper. (Probably a good move for him considering no NBA clubs have expressed interest in signing the restricted free agent).

Kobe Bryant said he wouldn’t be surprised if Vujacic takes the money and runs to Europe (if the rumors are true) considering the Lakers aren’t offering him more than a qualifying one-year deal worth $2.6 million.

“It depends on how much money they’re throwing at him,” Bryant said. “You got rules (NBA’s salary cap), so you’re playing with an uneven playing field. So if they want to throw a boatload of money at him.”

Looks like West will mull over the idea of playing overseas also.

This time, the overseas revolution of outbidding NBA teams for restricted free agents advances with Dynamo Moscow discussing a two-year, $10 million offer with Delonte West, a source close to West said on Thursday.

Clearly, Dynamo is a franchise with the resources to be taken seriously. Just a week ago, it lured New Jersey Nets forward Bostjan Nachbar with a three-year, $14.3 million contract.

Nachbar’s contract turned into a prelude to Atlanta Hawks free agent Josh Childress signing a groundbreaking three-year, $20 million deal with Olympiakos of Greece. So far this summer, four international players with NBA résumés – Jorge Garbajosa, Juan Carlos Navarro, Carlos Delfino and Pops Mensah-Bonsu – have taken substantial offers in Europe.

As with most restricted free agents, West has few options right now. He could sign a $2.76 million qualifying offer for the 2008-09 season and become an unrestricted free agent next year. General manager Danny Ferry has considered sign-and-trade possibilities for West but ultimately has wanted to keep West.

Good point.

Europe has traditionally been a destination for NBA players on the tail ends of their careers, as well as for fringe players who came out of college undrafted or failed to make it out of NBA teams' training camps.

But the landscape is changing, and Arizona recruit Brandon Jennings made headlines last week when he decided to play overseas rather than spend one year with the Wildcats before becoming eligible for the NBA draft -- a move other high school graduates may follow as a result of the NBA's increased age limit removing the preps-to-NBA option that was available to players until 2005.

But one prominent player agent told ESPN.com that he does not believe the Childress signing will become a trend because there are not enough European clubs willing to spend money on an NBA level.

Another big spender is Russian powerhouse CSKA Moscow, whose players celebrated their Euroleague title this spring by spraying $650 bottles of Cristal champagne on each other, and there are at least a half-dozen teams -- Efes Pilsen in Istanbul, Maccabi Tel Aviv, Dynamo Moscow and Khimki Moscow, along with Panathinaikos, that have loosened their purse strings considerably in the past two years to compete for American players they believe would be a good fit for their system.

But Olympiacos has clearly been the team most willing to make a major splash, and it did so with the Childress signing.

So long as there is a strong Euro, a luxury tax that prohibits many teams from spending over the limit, and poor GMs, there will be good players that slip away. I don't think this is some talent outflow suddenly, since by and large most players want to come here. But it is definitely an option, considering a 6th man like Childress got $20m tax-free AND yearly opt-outs.

Damn, the list keeps growing. Delonte west is reportedly mulling an offer from dynamo moscow.

I would go overseas. Definitely. If I was a bench player who did not get much respect from the league. I would take their big contract offer, where you would be treated like a god, and get to live in italy. Damn, pretty good deal.

I'm telling to guys. This is the new trend. More and more NBA players will be going overseas every year.

I can also see this happening with people living in the Unites States now. More and more people who live here will go overseas for a better life. The Unites States is still a good place to live, but it's not great anymore.

More and more people here are unhappy because of rising health costs, a weak economy, and a non caring government. Lot of people in the Unites States are stressed out because of money issues, are working longer and longer hours just to make ends meet, and lack the time for fun, family and friends.

Don't get me wrong, the USA is still a very good place to live and we should be grateful that we do not live in a 3rd world country. But places like Greece, Italy, and Spain are becoming for and more appealing.

The Euro is strong that is true.
Paying no tax is not true for US players. I'm sure they will pay local tax and tax to the US.

seeing the latest wiretap notes on superstars potentially playing overseas because there is no salary cap there, one thing that has been unmentioned that is in the NBA's favor but indirectly, is i imagine the massive amounts of money kobe and lebron receive from Nike might be viewed with a different attitude if those players were not playing in the US. yes Nike has a global market, but seriously...

can you imagine LBJ trying to tell phil knight hes going to olympiakos?

Well, it should be noted that both LeBron and Kobe's name have come up in recent news regarding playing overseas. In the case of K.Bryant, he could opt out after next season and did mention Russia. But, I think his comments were half serious and he likely won't leave Los Angeles for the foreseeable future. So, I don't believe Stern should be concern about losing either one of his superstars. But, no one can ignore the fact that the Childress signing has gotten a lot of NBA players thinking. Even the star players who are already under contract are now contemplating the prospect of playing overseas once their careers are over in the NBA.
