Higgins on Okafor: No stalemate, no hard feelings, no S&T

Nearly a month since becoming a restricted free agent, Emeka Okafor is not close to a new deal with the Charlotte Bobcats. Yet general manager Rod Higgins remains confident Okafor will remain a Bobcat.

Higgins insisted Friday that talks have not reached a stalemate. He said he has spoken to Okafor's agent, Jeff Schwartz, as recently as Thursday and said the team is not entertaining sign-and-trade offers for their starting big man.

"As we've repeatedly stated, we want Emeka Okafor back on our basketball team," Higgins said. "We're going to continue to have that hope that we will have a resolution and go forward."

Okafor, the Bobcats' first draft pick and the second overall selection in 2004, turned down Charlotte's offer last summer worth more than $12 million per season. Higgins wouldn't say what they've offered this time. Schwartz did not immediately return a phone call Friday seeking comment.

"There aren't any hard feelings on either side," Higgins said. "We continue to talk."

Josh Childress changed the dynamic slightly this week when the restricted free agent left Atlanta to sign with the Greek team Olympiakos. That left the Hawks with nothing in return, and some have predicted it could lead to more players spurning the NBA for overseas teams.

"I don't think you can say it raises a red flag only because we're the best basketball league in the world," Higgins said. "We'll continue to take care of the players that play in our league. That's what we're trying to do with Emeka."

What's uncertain is if Okafor wants to remain a Bobcat. He said he did during the final week of the season, but clearly had a strained relationship with coach Sam Vincent. While veteran Larry Brown replaced the fired Vincent, Okafor has remained mum. He did not reply to an e-mail Friday seeking comment.

"I'm not going to comment on the negotiations per se," Higgins said. "But we're maintaining that we're going to get a deal done."

Bonnell's version, with a little more info:

A source familiar with the situation said the Bobcats are now offering Okafor something closer to $10 million a season. Higgins declined comment on the negotiations.

It sounds like the Bobcats knew the pickings were slim for Mek and lowballed him. They have thru October (I think) to get a deal done and if it goes that long maybe the compromise will be last year's offer. Higgins doesn't sound like he wants it to get to the QO stage:

“Our comfort level probably wouldn't be so good. You'd have him for a year,'' before Okafor could leave without compensation next summer, Higgins said.

Obvious Higgins talking to the media was a reaction to Bonnell's story the other day. I think they intend to keep him...they just want to get the best contract (remember Crash?) they can.

Still, IMO they should go ahead and pay the man the same offer as last year and move on.

How long until the new headline becomes a wiretap? I guess we'd still have to deal with "It doesn't matter what MJ wants. Okafor doesn't want to play in Charlotte because Charlotte sucks. Oh, and MJ is a TERRIBLE GM".

We've never heard from him that he doesn't want to be here.''

And the first article mentioned how he said he hoped to remain a Bobcat during the last week of the season.

I agree though...it won't stop the feeding frenzy.

$10 mil a year for 4 or 5 years sounds perfect for EO50 to me.

maybe okafor would be receptive to a shorter deal, say a 3 year deal. that way he could still get paid now and still become a FA soon enough to sign another monster deal while his is in his prime.

3 years 36 mil?

Um, why don't they just offer like 12.5m/yr and get this thing done?

I'm for just getting it done, particularly since Higgins alludes that the big man/PF need will not get addressed until the Okafor situation is done. YIKES! Our biggest need for the season gets put on the shelf until they do a deal. COME ON CATS...GET IT DONE!
I continue to wait...and hope...for the return to Hornet's glory.

After the deal that Biedrins just signed I don't think that is going to cut it.
