OT - Would you sign Darius Miles to mess with Portland?
If Darius Miles plays in 10 games this season then his final two years of salary cap are reinstated against Portland. That's 9M this year pushing them into luxury tax again and I believe 9M eating into their free agent flexibility the following year. He would likely only cost the veteran minimum. Do you do it?

I'm pretty sure someone will do it...but trust me, you don't want him on your team.
He is a bad locker room guy, wayyy out of shape, just got busted for substance abuse, and no longer has the one ability that made him so intriguing...explosiveness.

Personally I don't want him on the team, I was just intrigued with the moral implications of the question. Do you take the inexpensive opportunity to stick it to a another franchise or do you follow the golden rule?

no I wouldn't want him on the Hawks... because the value in the move is hurting Portland, which doesn't help us much...but if I was OK city or someone like that, then I'd think about it

If you have a free agent that could go there, I would do it. I mean, why wouldn't they go after, say, Marvin next year.
Thing is, Miles's career is over. He just doesn't want to accept it. And I am not in the "he is a bad lockerroom guy" camp(he seems to get along great with his teammates...just not Nate Mcmillian" and the "busted for substance abuse" camp (it was a diet supplement for christ sake), but just the fact that in some workouts he is showing explosiveness and in others he isn't, its just that his knee is gone and he believes it isn't.

As an aside he was good in Van Wilder. Darius never could shoot, so without his explosiveness he is pretty pedestrian. I wouldn't be surprised if a western conference team does sign him and play him enough garbage time minutes to mess with Portland, but I wouldn't expect it in the off season. If he's still trying to get a spot during the season he might get some 10 day contract action. That way you get to try him out without the full season commitment.

I voted yeah. As a wizards fan it's double fun. Yes means I get to mess with portland for kicks, but they will never want to trade with us if its my team. But fortunately it's your team.
, and you guys get a " cancer"
I had to say yes.lol
anyway i just came to see how you guys are doing over the childress to Europe thing, josh smith situation and someone said you guys only have eight players under contract. Not sure if this is true but i figured your perception of the situation is better.
Maybe you'll have nine if you include dariu.......

How about you guys sign him to the vet min contract for one season? Then have Portland sends you the cash to cover Miles' contract and a second rounder or two (they have plenty) for the promise ATL not to cut him, trade him or play him in 10 games. Just let him rot on the inactive list. He doesn't really want to play, he just wants to go party on the road. Win-win-win for all three parties involved.

I see how Portland wins, not sure on Atlanta. All they get out of it is a 2nd round pick and they help Portland out. There needs to be more incentive then.
I of course wouldn't sign him because of him being a team cancer, however messing with Portland could be fun.

Re: OT - Would you sign Darius Miles to mess with Portland?
the first thing to keep in mind, is even if Miles counts towards Blazer team salary next summer, the blazers can still create enough cap-space to sign a top-level free agent. Assuming Diogu and Rodriguez are renounced or traded, all portland would have to do is renounce or trade for an expiring one of webster-frye-blake, and the blazers would have around 15 million in cap-space. Essentially, they'd be trading one of those players along with 2 guys out of the rotation for a good player.
Another thing to remember is that Miles has been suspended for 10 games. That means the 10-day contract option is out. A team would have to sign him for the season.
Then of course, there seems to possibly be some routes for appealing the re-application of Miles's salary to the team salary. So portland may be able to get the Miles salary off their ledger, even if Miles does play.
Finally, it appears that a minimum of 4 or 5 orthopedic surgeons have all concluded that Miles's knee is in terrible shape. The catilage is shot and that doesn't self-repair. Reportedly, it is so bad that in some parts of his knee, contact is not cushioned by cartilage, and that it's bone-on-bone contact.

If Miles played for 10 games and then retired, Portland could still reapply for cap relief. And under the circumstances its highly likely it would be granted

Ha ha. I was going to say something simliar, although a bit more vindicative. We could sign him, play him for a minute the first 9 games, and then tell Portland to trade us a decent player for Zaza or we will play Miles again. I meant that jokingly, but you're idea actually sounds feasible.

Nah, although we did bail out Portland back in da day by giving them Smitty for a title run and getting Mr. East Bay Funk ("Losing" Isiah Rider) out of their hair.
I just don't see an incentive for Darius to put ink to paper, particularly if he has enough sense to recognize there's an ulterior motive that has nothing to do with his skillz. It does no good for him to be prancing around the court for ten games in garbage time like, "See, y'all busters thought I was through, huh? So how ya like me n-- <<snap>> oh, fudge, there goes whatever was left of my knee. Now I'm stuck with permanent hops. Thanks for the veteran minimum, Hawks! (does that double-fist thing to his head) What the heck was I thinking?"
I'm just happy I have an excuse to sit through that Van Wilder movie now. Hopefully he makes an early appearance, that film looks awful...

No, we don't do it. We can't because we're the Hawks. If anyone else did it, it'd be clever.
If we do it, we'll find out there is some NBA rule against embarrassing teams from the Northwest and we'd end up with some kind of double secret probationary status, so the refs call double fouls on us.
