How do you guys feel about Jason Terry?

Post#1 » by JapanAir21 » Sat Jul 26, 2008 6:35 am

I don't follow this board as much as I do other websites where I talk about the Mavericks, but it feels like the common consensus is that Jason Terry is replaceable, very replaceable. Does anyone actually like him as a player? I feel like he's one of the guys we can depend on in the Playoffs not necessarily to lead us to victory, but to make plays, and score points. Dirk has to be that guy, no matter who we have on the team.

Am I alone in liking and glad we have JET? I think he's sufficient for what we ask for. He's a good shooter, and if he'd be a little more aggressive, I think he'd get a little more respect.

He's the second best player on the team. He's one of the most efficient scorer. 50% from the field, nearly 40% from the arc, 80% from the fouline. He's the sensational leader on the team

Wait...

He's also undersized and struggle against elite guards. He's an average defender.

Therefore,

His best role on the team should be Sixth Man.

I like JET, but if the right deal came along, I wouldnt blame the Mavs for trading him... Hes our Manu Ginobili though.

:o

1) Dirk
2) Josh
3) Kidd / Bass
4) Opposite #3
5) Terry

I like Terry, and don't want to see him go unless we get an upgrade, but he is NOT the 2nd best player on our team.

I like Terry if he is in the right limited role...a spark and scoring threat off the bench.

The biggest problem is the FO's lack of addressing the starting SG problem. Terry seems to have to step up into that role every season and does a fairly good job considering his limitations. When Donnie and Mark understand that Stack and Terry are not core players on this team, the Mavs will have an opportunity to get better. Although something tells me that it is already too late.

he doesnt have a very defined role b/c we seem to try and change it every year, then when we realize our sg situation sucks he gets thrown back into the starting lineup.

at this point we cant really afford to trade him b/c he's pretty much our only shooter aside from dirk, sure he's a little inconsistent but we have no one else better then him

He should start. I think we need his scoring too much to bring him off the bench, unless we can find another 2nd/3rd option somewhere (good luck with that). Having an undersized 2 isn't ideal, but with a pg like Kidd who can guard multiple positions it shouldn't hurt us as much defensively.

Trade bait he is one of the reasons this team struggles on defense. If you have him and Dirk out there at the same time for long stretches your giving up points. I see at least 2 or 3 of Wright Green RAT Singleton and Rhodes making an impact that helps us not need to play him as much. Green Wright should help at the 2 Rhodes RAT and Singleton at the 3 will allow Howard to play at the 2 some. If Terry is still needed it's at the 1 behind Kidd.

To be fair to JT, he's an above average defender who do pressure the ball. He's somewhat better than Steve Nash in this regards.

The good:
1. some great playoff performances (against the Spurs in 06 he was our second best player and very clutch, against the Rockets always)
2. he is the second guy to go to in the clutch and he is not afraid of doing that
3. good Energy and attitude, good shooter

The bad:
bad D, undersized, very streaky and probably getting worse, can not run the point very well, and too much of a jumpshooter.

Obviously with his age and contract, he's very expendable but would be a great 6th man to have on a championship team. Of course on our team, he often has to be the second/3rd best player especially when Josh decides to check out after halftime.

"He's our Manu Ginobli" except a very poor man's Ginboli.
