J Smoove to Orlando?

Post#1 » by DMannOC » Sat Jul 26, 2008 10:51 pm

I have a good friend who knows someone at the L.A. Times and he is saying that Josh Smith is trying to push for a sign and trade to either the Lakers or the Magic. I dont know how reliable this is, i doubt it has much truth to it but this is a good friend of mine who knows his stuff. I was wondering if anyone else has heard anything about this. I dont see how a sign and trade would work because im guessing it would be something to the effect of Hedo, J.J. and/or Bogans, Cooks, and a first for Smith... i just dont see how that would work with us trading all those players and only getting one player in return but it would be nice to see something happen to bring Smith here... just imagine

I just read on Hoopsworld that ATL had two offers on the table...one from the West, and one from an Eastern "big dog". Granted, most likely that eastern offer is from either Cleveland or Detroit, but the possibility of it being us did cross my mind. And I came up with the same offer you did...Hedo, JJ, 1st, + scraps....mainly because those are the only tradable assets we have (though I think Gortat might be sneaking into that area). I can't see ATL doing it, because Hedo won't be so cheap after this season...but was nice to daydream for a minute.

On one level it would not surprise me because Smith and howard have been friend a long time. But it just could never happen. The Hawks know that sending smith to Orlando means no chance to win division for 10 years. You just don't send that kind of talant to a team in your division. The Hawks may be willing to do a LA trade, but they would want Bynum and LA would only want to give odom. I don't see it either.

Boy it would be nice to have him and dwight.

Didnt Dwight, Critt, and Smith all play at the same school or something?

Not happening.

Cleveland and Detroit.

The thing about Josh smith is that he is just like Lamar Odom. A real big man would help like Okafor or Wallace would help.

i like hedo on this team as well, but lewis aint playing pf for ever, and if you can get a josh smith type of player and have a core of dwight, lewis, smith, pietrus, nelson, lee, locked up for many years that would be outstanding...we dont need to trade 4 or 5 players for him...it might hurt our depth this year, but what a core of players we would have..but its not gonna happen :D

IIRC Dwight and Josh played AAU ball together for the Atlanta Celtics. Dwight and Javarris played together at SW Atlanta Christian HS, when Dwight was a senior, and Javarris was a sophomore.

Is there a grade higher than A+? Cause that is what getting Smith and Pietrus would amount to in my book for this offseason. Like others I have skepticism, but man would that be great!

Smith would be sweet to have on this team but we are in the same division so that prob takes us out of it.

I could see us trading Hedo due to the thought that he may leave, they would need Battie also to interchange with Al at the 4/5 then prob add a 1st. I wouldn't know if that is what it would take but I'd do it, it would give us a nice young core that is locked up for years.

Adding Smith and Critt would be a pipe dream and an awesome one at that.

like others have said it's unlikely. I would imagine that "big dog" to be Detroit. They know they have to start making some moves for the future, as their window has started to close with that current group. Only thing is I don't see them moving Prince, and Smith really needs to start playing SF. He's not a PF (as the Hawks have often played him I believe).

If we did acquire him it'd be awesome, but so unlikely. If the Hawks trade him anywhere, it'd most likely be to the West.

My guess is if he doesn't get a big offer from another team and can't get a S&T, he's going to accept the Qualifying Offer and become unrestricted next summer.

This is not very likely and almost impossible. Pulling off a sign and trade with any team is really tough to imagine. If your Atlanta the only team that might make some sense is Memphis.

The problem Atlanta has is Smith made so little last year that any raise he receives is going to make him a BYC status player. Meaning since there over the cap in a sign and trade they only be able to bring back around 5 million dollars. Any remaining salary would have to be sent to a third team. Right now Hedo for Josh in a sign and trade doesn't really work.

Why would Atlanta do a trade for Hedo. If they trade Josh I think they go looking for a center first. Horford could easily move to PF. Hedo plays the same position of Marvin Williams. If they aren't going to pay Josh Smith why would they pay Hedo next year. Plus Marvin Williams is a free agent and they will have to deal with that as well

I think the sign and trade situation regarding restricted free agents of rookie deals is extremely tough and needs to be fixed. With the current system its very difficult to make any trades. Its almost impossible to even make a deal for another restricted free agent. Usually these deals only work with a team under the cap. Memphis could offer something like JC, Warrick and a couple of drat picks for Smith. Wouldn't be too bad since Smith could take the QO and leave for nothing next year.

I would almost say we go all the way with a base core of

Nelson
Pietrus
Hedo
J. Smith
Howard

Then your bench consisting of Johnson, Lee, Gortat, Cook, Bogans, Augustine, Foyle

I traded Lewis, JJ, Rights to Fran and a 1st pick to get Smith.
