Hawks weighing two sign and trade offers for Josh Smith

The Hawks are weighing two sign-and-trade offers for restricted free agent Josh Smith, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
Sekou Smith writes that the two offers come from "a Western Conference power and...an Eastern Conference big dog." Atlanta might not be willing to pay Smith what he feels he deserves, leaving either a sign-and-trade or the possibility that he will accept a qualifying offer and leave for nothing as an unrestricted free agent next summer. The last time Sekou hinted at a blockbuster trade Mike Bibby wound up in a Hawks uniform, so we're all ears. Jul. 26 - 10:43 am et ( from rotoworld.com )

He said a Western Conference power which is Lakers, Spurs, Hornets, Jazz, Rockets. Dallas is not a Western Conference power. They might have been 2 years ago. :rofl:

do yall honestly think the hawks would entertain the thought of getting Josh Howard?? Dont yall think we could get more out of Josh Smith, maybe package him up withs omeone else for one big player??

Here is a proposal from the Kings board, how do Hawks fans feel about something like this:

Kings trade: Ron Artest/Kenny Thomas/Protected Future 1st
Kings receive: Josh Smith (S&T)

Pistons trade: Tayshaun Price/Antonio McDyess
Pistons receive: Ron Artest/Kenny Thomas/Protected Future 1st

Hawks trade: Josh Smith (S&T)
Hawks receive: Tayshaun Price/Antonio McDyess

Would Raef LaFrentz(Expiring), Travis Outlaw, Sergio Rodriguez, Ike Diogu and 2 future protected 1st round picks be a decent offer?

Outlaw can fill in as a starting SF. Sergio is a nice developmental PG who loves to run. Ike is a banger who can score in bunches down low, albeit is injury prone. ATL also stockpiles 2 2st rounders.

Portland is clearly not a powerhouse.
This isn't a fantasy trade thread. take that **** to the trade board.

I think Hawks would only trade Smith for a PF or Center especially with the signing of Evans.

I find this a little confusing. If the reason for not extending Smith is to avoid the luxury tax, then why would you trade him for a player that will put you into the tax (ie: Howard or Prince). Wouldn't you be looking to trade him for a player or players that will help the Hawks win for a cheaper price?

Me, I'd take Smith at $12 over Howard or Prince at $10M. I'd even take that over Melo at $15M, but I hate Melo.

Howard is much better than he's been given credit for. The problem with getting him for Smith is that he plays the 3 and the thoughts of Marvin at 4 bring nightmares to my mind. But if in a 3 way deal we can get someone to start either at PF or C + J. Howard, that's a good deal due to Horford's flexibility. Now, there's no way you have a chance to get C. Anthony for Smith and you turn it down. Talent wise, Anthony is way above Smith. I like what the Pistons could offer. Billups + Sheed or McDyess for Smith and Bibby would make us much better. Anyway, I just do not want see us overpaying for Smith. If you can't come to terms with him, let the guy go and get real talent back. Any of those 3 trades would get it done for me.

I like what you just said....very smart comment...ur right we should not overpay this kid and if we decide not to we need to get real talent back for him, maybe Melo? The thought of Melo coming to the Hawks brings tears to my eyes (tears of joy). But htat brings up the question what do we do with Marv? I just hope we get this done quickly so we cna move on and get ready for the season

were probably need to offer more than just smith to get melo

maybe bibby, smith, marvin for melo+one of their pf?

Remember Josh Smith would be BYC with a raise over 20%. Meaning Hawks are not bringing in more than about 5 million in salary. A third team would have to be involved that has a trade exception or is under the cap to take on the extra salary.

Speedy wouldn't be nearly enough to overcome the BYC rules.

It'd probably have to be Mike Bibby.

And the thought of trading Bibby AND Smith after losing Childress is mind-numbing at this point.

I think the QO is much more likely...

I thinthe ASG will try their hardest to work out a sign and trade if only to save face, they absolutely have to get something back for Smith after losing Childress. Losing both of those guys without getting anything in return is the worse possible scenario for the ASG and us as fans.

They'll try to bring in a 3rd team or work out a deal with a large trade exemption (is that possible) to get a deal done.

Maybe they'll bend and just give the guy 11.5 so we'll be able to move on.

Speedy could be enough depending on the size of his starting salary.

if he will make less than 14 mil in the first year of his contract, speedy's contract can compensate for the BYC
